I'd say it's more like Bad Company 2 in the way that Bad Company 2 is Bad Company 2 and not in the way that Medal of Honor is Bad Company 2.

:O ... Huh. I dunno. Kinda interested.

So what we've learned is:

Making fun of bad games in QLs: Fine

Making fun of bad games based on bad properties with videogame references: Waaaaaaah you guys are too cynical and mean. QQ

But this is a good game.

Calling it "trying too hard" is kinda ironic, since it really feels like they asked Paul Robertson (the artist) and
Anamanaguchi (the musician) and told them to make the stuff they already make in their spare time (aka video game inspired art), just for an actual video game.

I don't know, I think it looks pretty fun.

@Wes899: Sounds like you just don't like Scott Pilgrim. That's your prerogative.

Hello Jeff G,

Cool Quick Look, but a little on the negative side. I think Vinny would have been a better wingman for this, to even things out. A 2 or 4 man coop would have been nice too.

Generic Jeff is negative comment...

Game looks awesome.

This is a pretty damn good PSN game, best played with a friend though.

Posted by HandsomeDead

This seems like it would have been good about 5 years ago. The more I see Scott Pilgrim related stuff, the more i'm put off the movie.

/is amazed at how many people are getting personally offended by a dude offering his honest opinion, and who is being asked to change it because they disagree with him.

Oh, wait! This is the Internet.

Edited by MrKlorox

Who you calling a Kunio Kun?

Brad's like "this looks fun and I have never played River City Ransom. May I play too?"

and Jeff is like "Fuck you! I don't enjoy this game so you're certainly not going to get a chance to make it any more fun than I had prescribed."

Posted by nitronomicon

Scott Pilgrim's power is to punch a dude 65x in the balls.  And glow while he does it.

" Man, the amount of negativity in this is ridiculous. Lately it just seems like Jeff hates every game that isn't a fighting game, an FPS, or housed in an old arcade cabinet. Maybe he needs another vacation.

IMO: This is only a $10 game. It is a throw back, not a modern style of game at all. This is meant to be fan service. The game is well made and fun if you are an old NES-area and/or River City Ransom fan. It also wouldn't hurt to be a Scott Pilgrim fan.  Also, the movie is pretty good, the books are better. The game is a good tribute to the source material. "
Maybe he just hates games that exist on "REMEMBER THIS THING?!". "
And for something that has an insane amount of references, the game also happens to not be that fun.

Actually, people are just disagreeing with him, not being personally offended or asking him to change.

Seems you're quite offended, though.

The games that this game is apparently spoofing were before my time, but this still looks pretty cool as a new game to me. I especially like the music.

@VilgeDuin: The gameplay feels a little slow at first but when you level up and get upgrade your stats you move blazingly fast and pull of nice combos.

Reading the comments...I can't fucking wait to watch this. Scott Pilgrim is the worst shit.

Edited by Cazamalos

people don't realize that hating something just because of the people that like it, makes you a hipster.

i find the movie trying to hard with the videogame references and special effects, to cover a shitty plot/idea, but i don't have anything against a game like this, it's been ages since i last played a 2D brawler

ps. don't worry guys halo and cod game are about to come out, i bet jeff lose that "i hate everything" attitude and recovers the  happiness with those shooters

Edited by animathias

I wonder why co-op is being disallowed in Quick Looks. Since the game is just River City Ransom, we all know how it plays and progresses. Co-op is about the only thing I can think of that would have made it interesting to watch.

edit: I'm talking about the video. The game itself looked fine, but it doesn't lend itself well to one of these, especially with a negative driver.

Why, oh why, can't they release this game on PC...?

*shows fist to the air*

I like the idea you can use a plastic cup as a weapon, and I'm really bummed they didn't show enemies in mo-cap suits.

Maybe should have got  one of the Anime Vice people in here to talk about the book series, which I love, and what the series is about. The series is really about real characters and people in surreal situations that only manga and videogames produce. I'd say the characters are the main draw of the series.

It's a ten dollar update to River City Ransom with amazing graphics and a great soundtrack. If you only like to play shooters and fighting games, this isn't for you. This is for twenty something nerds like me who grew up playing these games but didn't get cynical and decide they were all shit years later.

Apparently people debating = everyone being personally offended. Nice overgeneralizing there.

Where in any universe is Scott Pilgrim considered manga?

@VilgeDuin: For me, it's just the plot of the story that ruins it. The kind of thing I love in movies are dark, subtle humour, and a good story. This movie bodes neither of those things, thus allowing me to presume I won't like it.

Scott Pilgrim versus originality.

Posted by Nintendan

Jeff is a cranky, cynical guy. It's like there's no joy in his gaming.

I can't believe he didn't even let Brad get a controller. Would've loved to see some co-op action.

The same place that Avatar is considered an Anime.

@Chadster:  I didn't say it was manga, I said it puts its characters in situations that only videogames and manga create, thus giving at familiar ground for its audience to relate to. The point of the books are the crazy contrasting elements of the surreal 'gamey' or 'mangaish' moments with the real nature of the characters. Anyways, it's pretty close to manga, if you don't want to define it as such then i suppose graphic novel is more to your taste?

I'm a minute in, but wow that's about 12 different NES video games mashed up into one.

Posted by DeathbyYeti

This is the most Scott Pilgrim I would ever need. I still dont like it

Posted by Kajaah117

Edgar Wright!

... that's all I'm sayin'.

Posted by GetBentTheVideoGame

So obnoxious. Nice pixel art though.

Posted by wrathofconn

As someone who never read the books, this strikes me as much more interesting than the movie. I doubt I will buy it though.

Posted by Turbo_Toaster

Yup, VG references for the sake of it and nothing more.

Posted by habster3

Might have to check this one out; looks cool!

Posted by AlwaysBeClothing

I'm glad I did the 2nd level for my fake quick look.  Still Jeff hit on a lot of problems I also had with the game.

Posted by ArmedBear

This would have been a lot more fun if Brad was allowed to pull a Brad.

See Brad.  See Brad die.  See Brad die again.

Posted by MarkWahlberg

That rainbow section reminded me of the surfing in Rayman 3. And keeping with the theme here, not in a good way.

Posted by kollay

Music s'alright.

Posted by Turambar

Still really dislike the way this game looks.

Posted by beeryayghost

Gideon (the Cat) is in the background at 8:00! Awesome.

Posted by Rabid619

I really like this game, but a big part of that is a very dumb reason to like it... that being the fact that it takes place in Toronto and you collect Canadian currency. That is somehow amazing to me. The game itself is fun too, tough though.

Posted by Spunkrake

Good gravy, they've just invented nerd hipsterism.  "Oh, man, they're just ripping off river city ransom and mario and megaman.  They should really be digitizing the actors which would, then, be a reference to the classic arcade classic Street Fighter: The movie: the game, which would then be sufficiently indie and obscure enough for my tastes.  Mario is far to mainstream and therefore not cool anymore."  Just because our obscure childhood nerd stuff is now mainstream doesn't mean we have to stop liking it because it's all popular now.  It's a referential little game, try and relax.

Totally in agreement with the brawler fatigue, though.  That's a genre that hasn't really aged well.  And in case anyone didn't know.  Art by Paul Robertson.  He's done a brazillion other amazing things, if you're interested.

Posted by ArbitraryWater

Yeah. So it's a brawler. With a bunch of video game references.
