This may be the first video game based on a movie that doesn't suck. I am a fan of the art style, it looks awsome.

Yeahhhhh, I'm all for retro-inspired games and all
but in this case I'll stay away.

Best Brawler ever, it takes everything great about the series and perfects it. I love this game

@Spunkrake: Yeah. From time too time these guys have really, really weird hipster douchebag moments.

Game looks like fun and it's $10.

I don't get what all the whining is about.

I like it when Brad cracks himself up.

Please tell me that this isn't going to be the GB crew whining about "video game references".  Please tell me they aren't going to realize the hypocrisy of saying that, then wearing t-shirts that say "Xevious" on them, and recording a podcast where a good chunk of time is mentioning the NES game Slalom.

I will be the first to say I am not a Scott Pilgrim fan, not to say I dislike it, but I had never even heard of it before the movie being announced, so I really have no feelings on it prior to this. After playing the demo on PS3 though, I really want to buy the game.  I really enjoyed it, it has great pixel art, the music rocks, and it's just a fun beat em up. I really got stoked when the boss flashed orange like he does, haven't seen that done in so long. Nothing wrong with some old school gaming goodness like that.

I feel like Jeff was being too hard on this while playing it.   I mean, he's really just nitpicking it because it's so much like River City Ransom, but come on...that game came out over 20 years ago, it's not like we've been flooded with games like that recently.  Plus, it's $10. You can't go wrong with that in a world where all those damn Summer of arcade games are $15, some of which aren't worth $15. Granted there's no online co-op, but for the price, I'm not gonna complain about that either.

Why is such a bad thing that the developers of this wanted to pay homage to RCR, when so many other recent games get copies and knock offs as it is? I didn't hear Jeff or Ryan complaining half as bad about how Medal of Honor tries so bad to copy Modern Warfare during that quick look.

Oh, I just noticed. The font you see in the shops is the font used in Earthbound.

It's sad to see such little love for this game. Everything about it seems great. For 10 bucks, there also seems to be a lot of game. Think I'll go for the PSN version.

Edited by kollay

Also, did Itagaki play some part in the development of this game? Cause there are a lot of titty jiggling here.

Not that it's a bad thing.

The only thing I know about Scott Pilgrim is that someone said it was Twilight for dudes. I was not inspired to find out more. I do like RCR though.

Posted by TadThuggish

also,
" As I’ve talked about Scott Pilgrim (the books) on here before, I’ve heard once again that it’s too “referential”, or “trying to look cool”.  Is it?  I don’t know.  I certainly don’t think so.  If River City Ransom is mentioned, it could be because the author loves River City Ransom.  I love River City Ransom.  Marketers have a special, often undisturbed, habit of taking the intricacies of a culture and selling it back to the same people.  But that’s not all cases.  I shouldn’t stop playing video games because evil salesman exist.  SP is a labor of love."

Family Guy fails when Seth MacFarlane and a team of a hundred writers skim through People Magazine and try to come up with references to real world events, causing Peter Griffin, a blank-slate character, to say "LINDSAY LOHAN'S GOIN TO JAAAAYEL", though neither the author nor the character give a damn about Lindsay Lohan.  They never have.

Scott Pilgrim is written as someone who plays video games.  He was made by someone who plays video games.  There's no reason for him NOT to reference a video game.  You and I do it every day.  Everyone who plays video games leans over to their buddy and makes a video game joke.  That's what this site is DEVOTED to.  Musicians think in music, scientists think in science, and gamers think in games.  These "dumb hipster references!" are also utilized by the jocks from your high school, who referenced famous athletes amongst themselves.  "Hipster" is not a word anymore.  It's like "gay".  The definition (if there ever was one) has been lost, and it's only used by the socially-awkward to describe who or what they find uncomfortable.  When you see a girl blogging about how much she loves "the mario kartss! <3", it's not "Hipster".  It's just a girl talking about Mario Kart.  Do you like Mario Kart?  Then be glad others are enjoying the things you enjoy!  Talk about them together!  Though, since it's a new medium, gamers are a fickle bunch who long for a time when they can keep an entire burgeoning market to themselves and their lunch table.  It's not that way anymore.  And that's great.  Every Scott Pilgrim video game reference is on purpose, and makes sense in the context of the characters.  Whether you like its style or execution does not make the past sentence untrue.

That's like saying Super Mario is the Godfather for kids. Writing off entire franchises due to misinformed people may not be the most pertinent way of approaching things.

Loved RCR and I liked the demo of this. If it were out on XBLA it would be a day one purchase. I'll watch the movie and decide if I can wait to buy it or if I need to get it on PSN.
Posted by Splodge

I dont get it. Since jeff doesnt seem to like these kind of games, and has absolutely no interest in scott pilgrim, wht the fuck is he doing the quick look? The game isnt aimed at him at all.

I think it looks stylish as hell, and seems like a lot of fun. Who cares if its a nod to some game released twenty years ago? That's like every single fps released in the last ten years being slated because they are too similar to Doom.

I'm saddened that there's no online multiplayer. =( This game brings me back memories of River City Ransom. Such a great game.

It comes out on XBLA on the 25th.

Man so much negativity in this Quick Look.  Growing up with everything it's referencing I think this game is fantastic and even more fun with friends which is a shame they shot down doing co-op in this video immediately.  I don't know anything about Scott Pilgrim but this is a quality brawler and those are in short supply these days.

Another thing I gotta say about Jeff's attitude with this game, is he acts like everyone played River City Ransom 20 years ago, and became as jaded as he is on it, and hates it now.

Even though I am a child of the NES era and owned one since I was 8 years old, I actually never played and beat River City Ransom til only a couple months ago. So that game was completely new to me, and I enjoyed every second of it. Just goes to show how this formula isn't really that played out because even with all the games I've played over the years, I don't think I had experienced anything like River City Ransom before.

What the hell is River City Ransom?

And why wasn't Brad allowed to play?

It has been scientifically proven Solid Snake is the Donkey Kong to "It's On". >.> Anyone? Anyone?

You know, I like Anamanaguchi, Scott Pilgrim, and Paul Robertson a great deal, and am looking forward to this. Granted there are somethings about Scott Pilgrim that sucks, and I generally hate hipsters a great deal, but there are a lot of things I like about the series that aren't necessarily game related.

Unfortunately, Jeff has zero self awareness sometimes.

@AddyMac: yeah, I will keep asking that myself. they never do multiplayer in these quick looks when they could, and would help make some of them more interesting. I'm sure they got controllers sitting around, just friggin pull one out and do some damn multiplayer. Thats where this game looks like it would shine too.

I know nothing about Scott Pilgrim, but this seems pretty cool (except where it's a brawler). Don't know why Jeff is so down about it.

Odd that you would say that, when it's this game and everything about it that is hipster douchebag at its most raw form.  Hipsters hate on stuff that is mainstream and lame, but hipster douchebaggery is in fact now mainstream and lame, so in a weird form of snake eating itself, the hipsters have become the very thing they rage against.

River City Ransom and the Kunio Kun games were awesome, it was a distinct style of that era.  Ripping it off is lame and dirty, and downright actionable as far as I'm concerned.

" Man, the amount of negativity in this is ridiculous. Lately it just seems like Jeff hates every game that isn't a fighting game, an FPS, or housed in an old arcade cabinet. Maybe he needs another vacation.

IMO: This is only a $10 game. It is a throw back, not a modern style of game at all. This is meant to be fan service. The game is well made and fun if you are an old NES-area and/or River City Ransom fan. It also wouldn't hurt to be a Scott Pilgrim fan.  Also, the movie is pretty good, the books are better. The game is a good tribute to the source material. "
Maybe he just hates games that exist on "REMEMBER THIS THING?!". "
So he hates every single Nintendo game since Super Mario World (other than Pikmin and Wii Fit perhaps).

As someone who lives in toronto (hence my lame ass name) I can tell you that this is 10000000000000000000000% accurate. I walk down the street all the time punching fools and taking their coins. it's just how it is rollin in the GTA

man I'm playing and this game kicks ass, not understanding how much people are not liking it

Even though I'm supposed to love all these referentual moments from the golden era of VGs, it simply won't do it for me. Like Jeff said: trying way too hard.

Or maybe the game designers were just having fun referencing things they liked and that their audience would like.

Maybe not for everyone, but hmmmm really oddly negative quick look on a movie tie-in game based on a property that you admit to not reading or knowing anything about? I mean the game is really for fans of the movie and comic right? And let me tell you if you are one of those this is AWESOME. Also lets compare this to the Iron Man or Kick Ass or Watchmen movie tie-in games... This is 100 times better and more original than those were. (I know its based on River City Ransom, but the idea and style is still original). The jokes and fan service are fun and should be right up your ally. Why are you not happy seeing mega man looking buildings and Mario coin boxes and 8-bit music?  I mean as you say i nthe quick look they involved the active 8-bit fan community making the music. Its not a phone in.

Plus I have wanted a River City remake for years and no one makes one for some reason, i have the stupid game boy advance version on my gamecube gameboy player but there is no 2 player (since its a gameboy game). So this is really awesome guys. Brad never played that so he should play this! I mean I hear Brad saying he was down on modern brawlers, and even Castle Crashers; well yeah I get it we played a lot of those in our lives. We had Turtles and Simpsons arcade, and Double Dragon and Bad Dudes on NES back in the day - but for a lot of kids they haven't played those games, they are getting castle crashers and this as their brawlers. this might be their X-men the arcade game. It certainly looks better than the games we had back in the day anyway, and for a $10 nostalgic filled movie tie-in game i think it looks great! gonna go buy it now!

Hipster is a completely arbitrary term people like to throw around when they're not clever enough to properly describe what it is that's actually wrong. mutha3 was likely making the point that it's ironic for Jeff and crew to look down on something for being so heavily referential when the source material is something they're so attuned to. They talk about arcade games more than PC gaming (sans the SC2 talk), but they aren't hipsters for considering PC gaming second tier to consoles.  Ripping off implies that there's a complete disregard to the source material, which obviously isn't the case.

The existence of this game is almost a mathematical necessity.   Jeff is trying to deny a tautology.
Posted by Drainoslushy

As they do indeed admit (odd word to use, simply stated by the guys) that they know  little about the Scott Pilgrim stuff, and they only have the game to judge the game on, it's a pretty generic scrolling beat em up which has nothing new compared to something from years and years ago. No idea why fans of this have to get so cringeworthy defensive when it's quite obvious how weak this would look to anyone else.

They don't lay into it, they liked the art style, they just make the clear observation that it's a River City Ransom knock off. You expect them to rub one out over it?
