So much of my mid childhood splayed out like a small freakshow. This stuff was golden. This was stronger than nintendos stuff, right? Right?

I played Alex Kidd on my Master System often and I seem to remember a different first level. Maybe the European version is different? Or my memory just doesn't hold up.

Some surprisingly pleasant music in these old games.

I had a startling realisation during this video, that I've actually played a Shinobi game on the Mega Drive; not sure which one but the one in this QL looks very familiar. I never actually owned the system, but a friend of mine had it (not that I even knew what it was called at the time) and I would occasionally go to his place and play his games.

Whenever something triggers my very vague memories of those games to resurface, I feel really proud of myself cause I've always thought that I didn't play any games of that era.

Alex Kidd was nails. I never got past that bloody janken guy.

That monsterworld 4 music almost put me to sleep too.

Hey the Master System was the dominate 8-bit system here in Europe! It has a proud history of being looked down upon by Commodore 64 owners!

Posted by hakunin

@CaLe: Nope, same first level en the European version.

Holy crap, Alexx the Kidd, that brings me back... played the shit out of that

Posted by Animasta

revenge of shinobi and super hang on came on that 6 games in one cart for genesis, and that's basically all I had for a year...

goddamnit revenge of shinobi is so good

Edited by Nevi

I haven't played them since I was eight years old and at a friend's house, but I recall forming the opinion that Alex Kid was a poor man's Super Mario Bros. and Revenge of Shinobi was a rich man's Wrath of the Black Manta.

Sega games have some JAMS

Posted by MasturbatingestBear

Why does this exist when Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection already exists? With way more games.

Posted by csl316

Shinobi's Revenge! What a great soundtrack, that one.

Posted by EndrzGame

I really wish they had included Wonder Boy 3 in the collection instead of 4. WB3 was a fantastic game, and I think it would hold up pretty good today. Sadly I still have my old cartridges in storage, but no system to play them on. Think it's 'bout time I hit up the ebayz and get me another SMS.

Was one of them Monster World IV? In English? Ultimate Genesis Collection was also Backbone, who are known for half-assing that kind of stuff; these newer Vintage Collection releases are by a Japanese developer called M2, who Nintendo hires to write all of their Virtual Console emulators. They are skilled and obsessed with accurate emulation, and the emulation in these releases here is way higher quality than anything Backbone ever put out (especially in the sound department; Backbone always horrifically mangled their Genesis sound emulation).

I'm betting Gradius is just gladius, the Latin word for sword.

I've played most of the games on that collection a lot and I never noticed any problems with the sounds. Especially in SoR 2, where I would definitely notice it. What is the price of this?

Ah yes, I remember the Master System days. I even remember seeing Alex Kidd in a Toys'R'Us shop and distinctively remember seeing that ghost that kept on killing you. Hang-on was indeed a pack-on with the Master System as well as a shooting game as well. Used to play it round my cousin's house. Shinobi and Super Hang-On look pretty cool, but not so much with the other games.

Man I'm trying to remember Alexx the Kid... I loved that game, the furthest I can remember is controlling some gyrochopter that could shoot buulets...

I think it's $10 for each pack of three games.

That Shinobi music was effing great. It's too bad when I had a Genesis I had no money whatsoever, and my dad bought us exactly 0 games (a little bit of Funcoland manipulation was all we had, so our games got progressively worse until we got our own cash).

Posted by mabber36

I would pay 5 bucks just for monster world 4

don't want any of those other games

Posted by Dallas_Raines

God, that music in MW IV is the worst...

Posted by Zero_

Man, is it me... or does the Shinobi music... there's a bit that sounds like Time's Scar from Chrono Cross

Posted by Wandrecanada

Wow man Monsterland is like Zeliard.

Posted by FoxMulder

Man, I remember the days where I could pause a video, get a snack, come back, and simply bump the space bar and the video started while my hands were full of sandwiches! Man 4 weeks ago was a great time!

Posted by Rhombus_Of_Terror

I had so many memories of Alex Kidd :3

Also, that Revenge of Shinobi intro is bad-ass.

Posted by Nentisys

Shinobi is fucking awesome.

Posted by DjCmeP

Ryan should buy a Master System and then they should do a Master System TNT!

Posted by SpunkyHePanda

I can tell that Monster World IV music will be stuck in my head for a while.

Posted by liako21

i never did beat revenge of shinobi. too bad the 3ds one kinda blew.

"I never owned a Master System 'cause I'm not some kind of chump"

Hey fuck you :)

Posted by D_W

Wow. Those Monster World games look awesome!

Posted by Brackynews

Well if these titles are $5 each on PSN, that's still better than the Wii Virtual Console prices. $9 for MW4, but it did get released there 2 weeks ago... :/

@EndrzGame: You can get Monster Lair and Dragon's Trap on Wii Shop Virtual Console.

Damn son, that's harsh. At least you can ask him what the problem was. ;)

@MasturbatingestBear: Because none of these games are on that collection?

@piderman: And Vic Viper, which is Latin for fuck your shit up.

@BeachThunder: Thanks for that. ;)

Posted by Greebman

great now i got all the music from this quick look stuck in my head and i never played any of these dang games

Posted by Freqtal

FOUR Jeff & Ryan Quick Looks? This is a good day to be alive.

Posted by upwarDBound

Adventure Island was a re-skinned Wonderboy by the same developer Westone.

Posted by nyv

When I imagine that I was fighting my brother to be able to play this as a kid... curiously enough I knew exactly the layout of the 1st level and the music just takes me back sooo much.

Posted by GunnBjorn

Man, I loved the intro sequence of Revenge of Shinobi só much back in the days! I could watch it over and over again.

Posted by fox01313

Too bad they didn't put these together with other Sega games to another Sega collection on disc. Liking the platform 3d presentation in the menus over just looking at the name of the game with maybe a screenshot.

Posted by Pop

Revenge of Shinobi 3 is my favorite, I've only played that and the first one, don't know anything about the second one, but I'm guessing you blow ninjas up.

Posted by leebmx

The Shinobi music is fuckin fantastic....

Posted by Nugget

@SpunkyHePanda: Haha same here, so catchy!

Posted by bones360uk

Hey Alex kid in shinobi world is great!especially the music

Posted by Yurtigo

Why wasn't no turbo used in Super Hang On?

Posted by Sunjammer

That Monster World collection menu music is the fucking bomb

Posted by RagingLion

Comments as they occur:

  • Rock, paper, scissors as a boss fight seems super dumb.
  • That music for Revenge of Shinobi is legitimately cool

Hey fuck you :)

Agree. MS was amazing. Atleast for me. Never had a fond thingy for SMB(Though i loved smb 2(nonjapan) and SMB3) I can say that it annoys me that they hit AKIM so hard. It was a fun game back in 86. And i played that game for ages.
