Shitty rogue-likes are the shitty puzzle-platformers of 2013/2014/2015. Does anyone know what started the rogue-like bandwagon? I wanna say it was Edmund McMillen's suprisingly succesful Binding of Isaac that kicked off the train, but I'm not sure.

Interesting trivia for you: the wailing sound in the music at the end that you love/hate is the creaking of a hinge on my closet in my apartment before I put some WD40 on it.

in fact, pretty much all of the music is built out of weird samples like that!

I would say it would have been either that or Spelunky I guess, at least for making rogue mechanics popular in more mainstream games. There have always been lots of these games around, but usually just being offered for free by community driven development.

There seems to be some interesting dynamics with this one though and I tend to enjoy rouge-likes so I can't complain.

With it's Threes like movement this game seems like it would be at home on mobile platforms though.

@blupotato: Ah yes, Spelunky, how could I forget Spelunky. I can respect Spelunky, even if I don't want anything to do with it. You could put in Dark Souls as another trigger, I suppose, or the whole progression craze that happened as games started to chase after that sweet COD money.

Yeah, I'd probably say Spelunky (2008) or Dwarf Fortress (2006), maybe DoomRL in 2005. The latter two spawned plenty of popular threads in places like Something Awful and got some coverage on video game news sites. Not sure if Spelunky really got big until the 2012 XBLA release. Binding of Isaac came out in 2011, by that point there were plenty of roguelitelikes on Steam and Desura.

There's no permanence in this right? So this is a proper rogue-like, and not a rogue-like-like.

Edit: Well, seeing the end, maybe it's a rogue-like with a slight dash of extra like.

I'm not sure I dig how enemies can attack outside of their movement pattern. For example, the slugs that only go left-to-right being able to attack up or down seems unfair, since you can't do anything to guard against that. You see an example of it early on in the video when Vinny is attempting to nab the blue potion, and his Ninja gets killed by a slug that is heading to the left.

Personally, I like a little permanence in my dungeon crawling. But i'd say the rogue like made its way to the mainstream with Diablo, even if it didn't really feature the permadeath that purists seem to require. Though it wasn't until 2013 that we coined all of these silly terms for these games.

I think your game looks cool. did you guys play and love 868-HACK like me by any chance? seems like some influence leaks into this. the SFX in that were all done by the dev's mouth

The problem with all these "rogue-like" games, is that they are so damn shallow. Waiting for the day someone makes a game like Rogue, with deep character building.

@posh: yeah totally, we are huge fans of 868-HACK (and i think it shows!). we were lucky enough to get a bunch of feedback from the maker of that game, who is completely awesome. I love his sound design too, it totally adds a lot to all of his games.
