I haven't started watching yet but I've been hoping there would be a quick look of this game for a long, long time. It is definitely one of the best games ever, and also one of my favourites. Also, main menu of Deus Ex is one of my favourite main menus ever.

Ten years makes a game HILARIOUS.

I would be delighted to hear Brad's first playthrough reactions on the Bombcast.

I cannot thumbs up this quick look enough.

If you wanna pick this one up for the first time the NewVision texture upgrade and Kentie Launcher and Kentie DX10 renderer are nice. Also look into BioMod as it updates some gameplay features to be a bit more modern.

Also play the training but skip the intro sequence if you want to go in without knowing anything about the stuff behind the scenes before you find out as JC Denton ingame.

I just started playing through this game for the first time in anticipation of Human Revolution and my God, this game is awesome.

Posted by NTM

That game is still awesome. I didn't play it when it came out, but just months ago I beat it for the first time. It's great.

I was about 12 and that first level is what stopped me from playing this game. Seems like such a shame now.

I hope you're not serious.

Deus Ex was tough to love in the beginning. Maybe by that time I hadn't played a lot of games with this kind of character progression, or this kind of character progression simply didn't exist, I don't know. But I remember being very intimidated by how fragile your character is in the beginning. I've been known to be diligent, however, (and I happened to love games that allow you to use stealth) and I pushed through, and I ended up loving every second of it. The game doesn't reward you immediately, but boy, when it does... It was indeed one of the best games ever.

Never liked this game, came to it too late to really appreciate it. Just felt old as shit to me.

BUT I GUESS THATS NOT THE MAJORITY RULE AHAHAHAHA

Posted by csl316

I've had this game for years. Maybe I should finally play it.

Posted by DirtyEagles

I liked the second one. you could play basketball with dead bodies.

PS: it is the direct X10 mod that is causing them to skip dialog.

The boardroom!

Edited by Pop

Never played it, I wanted to play it like 2 years ago but the textures put me off, I know it's great and revolutionary game but can't do it. I'll wait for the remake :D and play the new one.
Oh and that song is great.

One of the most overrated games of all time.

Oh shit I totally have this in my Steam list. Alright let's do this.

I don't have the DX10 mod and my game is still skipping dialogue.

Remember when games had faith in the player and didn't have to rely on the lowest common denominator? :/

I'm not particularly fond of Deus Ex's genre, but man, watching this QL is depressing when you consider what that genre(and games in general) has turned into.

@craigbo180: I guess you are one of these new generation players who never played Deus Ex , Quake etc..? ehhh kiddies.... go back to MW.
I'm 32, I never played Deus Ex and I hate MW. I wish I did though, back in 2001. But play this now, even with highrez textures.... i don't know....

So when do we get the System Shock 2 throwback Quicklook with SHTUP and Rebirth?

How many games does Brad say he is still going to play? Too much.

Don't worry about it dude, it is elitism at it's finest. It's totally fine if you haven't played it. If the game really appeals to you that much that you can put up with some dated visuals and gameplay then go for it otherwise you won't really be that much worse off for not playing it.

Great quicklook, but it didn't show off Deus Ex at all and was actually painful to watch for someone that loves this game and had played multiple times. Also, it didn't seem like Patrick has played it before. Ever. That, or he has a really bad memory. "You can lean, dude!" and bunch of other stuff I was thinking while watching this.

Posted by mrfluke

love deus ex, and i know they were goofing off but man that was annoying to watch with the whole can throwing

Posted by Fudge91

Well... never hand the controls to patrick again... jesus christ...

Posted by DoctorLazy

Probably not the first to say this, but this game came out in 2000, not 2001.

This game predicted 9/11.

Not as good as Halo

Edited by aceofspudz

The fact that none of the guys understood the concept of a cone of fire made this quicklook kind of excruciating. And Patrick spec'd out his character as stealth but didn't use any of the stealth tools properly due to QL time pressure.

Despite these problems the game still kind of holds up. Already pre-ordered HR. I'm ready to love again.

@14:10: ILM confirmed.

I know exactly how you feel.

The New Vision mod is great when combined with the DX11 engine mod. If anyone has played the game before at all, I highly suggest Biomod for playing the game too. It really sands down a lot of the awkwardness with the augs and makes them all pretty useful.

Oh man, remember when games were good?

lol is all I can say to that

I'm already bored of playing the new one, the takedowns are such a dumb addition. The way they freeze time is annoying.

Edited by DoctorLazy

Yes Brad, you do need to play this game.  Being a video game reviewer who hasn't played through Deus Ex is like being a film critic who hasn't seen Citizen Kane or Casablanca.

Posted by DiscoDuck8k

<3 Giant Bomb for doing this. I was planning on playing through again before the new one comes out, but I might just go ahead and get started today. Texture pack? I'm there.

Patrick said that he was making his character built for everything but combat and then proceeds to not sneak around and get into combat a lot. Quick look pressure sucks but it happens. =/ Anyway I just recently played this game in anticipation for HR and after getting over the graphics, the game was pretty fun. If anyone is going to play this for the first time soon, I feel I should say that you shouldn't expect your weapons to hit perfectly without training in the skill it's in. One of the things I liked about the game is that you totally could have turned it into a first person shooter if you specced JC right or made it feel like a big stealth game.

I also recommend this site right here: http://kentie.net/article/dxguide/ It helps you tweak things in the game you can't do in the main menu and made it so I could get rid of those annoying shadows that get a little too dark.

There was an episode of the X-Files spinoff show "The Lone Gunmen", also broadcast around the release of Deus Ex in March 2001, that was even closer. It actually featured a conspiracy in which a remote controlled passenger jet was set to fly straight into one of the WTC towers. Sometimes I wonder if the truther movement would've been as widespread today if it hadn't been for that episode triggering their fantasies.

More QL Throwbacks! PLEASE.

Posted by fisk0

@Drew4115: yeah, was kind of annoying first seeing them not spend any experience point into weapons, and then be surprised they couldn't hit anybody.
