Quick Look: Urban Trial Freestyle

Before you start comparing this to that OTHER trials game, consider that this game's rider could be in ZZ Top.

Fucking Gross.

I'm torn. On one hand, this is a shameless rip off of Trials. On the other, Trials on-the-go on my Vita sounds pretty enticing.

This game reminds me of another one.

Playstation All Stars.

You're right - it's fantastic on the Vita. Hate to say it but I prefer it to the XBLA game (the first one - I didn't play the sequel).

Zynga'd!

Rip-off or not, I don't see a problem with this. Trials HD is Xbox-exclusive, so why wouldn't somebody else develop a Trials-like game for PS3? It's not like RedLynx was going to do this.

Posted by Rhaknar

was hoping Jeff to say "oh CM Punk plays this game?" when Brad said " you can choose to show your friends, or best in the world..." :(

then again Brad would probably have no idea what he meant

I downloaded this a couple of days ago and am having fun with it. It might be a rip-off, but at least it's a good one :)

Hey guys this game totally isn't like Trials HD, it's not even got bikes or trials or anything, it just seems that way!

Eurogamer was not too kind on this game: 4/10

Apparently it doesn't have a lot of tracks and the handling is not as good as Trials.

It feels unfair to constantly return to Trials as a point of comparison, but it really shouldn't. RedLynx's game is successful for a reason, and that reason has eluded Tate Interactive. There's no passion or care in Urban Trial Freestyle's construction, no sense of playfulness of fun. It's a game that does the bare minimum required to look like another game, and once the resemblance is close enough, it leaves it at that, with all the rough edges still on display. Just because Trials isn't available on Sony's platforms doesn't mean that this weak echo deserves your time.

Oh, this is.... not made by the same people...

Ugh, I hope RedLynx release Trials Evolution on PSN and wipe the floor with this thing.

Playstation duders deserve a better Trials!

I didn't think the company was around seeing as I their offices closed nearby. Turns out they moved. Good on them, I just wish they wouldn't make such an obvious rip-off.

Another Doom clone.

What is it with PS3 budget titles looking fucking AWFUL, usually in the same ways?

What the fuck is Jeff even talking about with this being shameless? Trials was just a rip off of a TRILLION flash games, and even the original Trials wasn't the first of it's kind. And I don't think there are many sensible aesthetics for this kind of game either. And it seems like they get way more creative with everything going on on the actual track than Trials ever did.

And I think as long as it's not available on the same platform, it's usually easier to get away with this stuff.

And to Brad, the failing to stay on the bike looks fine. Trials is the loose one. Getting knocked from a bike is pretty easy, I've been riding dirtbikes since I was 3 feet tall, and with those kinds of forces your guy is seeing, it's pretty insane he's managing to hold on even in this. In Trials it's pretty silly.

Yet it's merely "weird" that the game is just reusing tracks... And that the geometry is less than great... And that the game is fucking hideous to behold... And you seem to be playing a homeless man...

This seems really frustrating in the wrong ways, whereas real Trials is frustrating in the best ways

Who is dinosaur now, made my day!!!

Posted by zenmastah

Compared to Trials, the bike physics are terrible.

Posted by Death_Burnout

Shameless knock-off's typically have terrible levels designs in them though. There was some actual effort put into this at the very least, maybe not enough of it but still.

How many times do you have to copy a game before it stops being a shameless rip-off and starts being a genre?

Edited by LobsterVendetta

So I noticed a severe lack of bike explosions and a counter of how many faults you've done, which was a great driving force to improve yourself in the Trials games.

Also the way the rider moves around, or tricks, looks kind of ugly to me.

Edited by W1SSY

After playing through the game on Vita the performance that I experienced was nothing like what Brad said. Also this game is not like Trials. Where Trials is almost brutally difficult, this game seems to be more about time trials and trying to do long jumps, speed checks, and high jumps to get the most stars.

4 times.

Some moments, like the rolling boulder and driving through the office building, seem so fun and crazy. But I keep seeing hang-ups with the physics, and the way the tracks are being recycled, and it turns me off. I'm all for more Trials, but not when it's a half-hearted rip-off. The least they could do, if they couldn't match the precision and fidelity of Trials, is make sure the levels are varied.

Posted by Rox360

Interesting thing, here... It seems like someone had the idea of taking the gameplay from Trials and making it sort of setpiece-based to spruce things up and make the game unique. Make every track an Uncharted level, pack so much detail into it that it can be played 20 times before you've even spotted all of the cool things going on. But then they force you to play each level 20 times because they spent so much resources on each one that they had to reuse the few tracks they had to pad out the length of the game. At least that's how I assume it went, based on this quick look.

That's basically bad design. You can't make a game like this work like that. You can't have a TrackMania where each level took a hundred man hours to piece together because of how amazing you wanted them to look. You'd end up with like ten levels in the whole game and the concept is wasted, because the game's true strength isn't in the setpieces, but in how many different challenges you can dish out and how varied you can make them. That's the strength of a highly skill-based game like this.

I just think it's an interesting thing to look at, from a game design perspective. It's a good case for how taking two awesome things and combining them doesn't necessarily create an awesome result. Those things can easily counteract each other in ways you never saw coming. And in the end, it doesn't matter how amazing and dynamic you can make your game look when you're sacrificing gameplay and longevity to make that happen.

Always find Brad doing QL on these Trials games to be massively intense, shame they just didn't get Evolution on PS3 instead of this which looks okay if you can't play the 360 Trials games.

Posted by msavo

The Vita version is ok.

Posted by Devise22

@Jeff While I agree with you that this seems like a pretty blatant attempt at making the same game as Trials, how would any developer go about making another game in this genre? Trials did it so well, so effectively that pretty much any style of game in this vein is going to seem like a clone. The added touches of random chaos in the environment seemed interesting. Although they did seem to be cause a bit of a hiccup on the actual fidelity of the gameplay.

I don't know, it just feels like you are pretty much saying don't make another "trials" game unless you are attempting to redefine the genre or the studio who made the original Trials.

Posted by ALavaPenguin

Why didn't they name this like a trials sequel? Is this not a proper sequel?

EXACTLY what I was thinking, except put far more eloquently than I was going to make effort to. I love how full the levels are of STUFF, but clearly their workflow was terribly directed and they did the filling before laying the baseline for a large enough selection of tracks.

But basically I agree. 'Tis fascinating

I was confused for awhile watching this quicklook. It took me a long time to be able to realize that this was a knockoff product, and not some weird spinoff of Trials.

While this seems like a.. high quality knockoff, it just feels like it's deliberately trying to confuse the consumer. The only thing that looks even slightly different is the general UI, which doesn't look as good as proper Trials. I just think if you're going to spend the time and money to make this exact kind of game, you could at least try to differentiate it in visual style or other ways.

Edited by PhilipDuck

How is this legal? Haha, looks alright.. I kinda prefer the graphic/art style of 360 Trails HD.. Looks alright though. The dev team can't be proud of the using same track templates over and over.. that's just lazy level design work!

I think I'll just wait for Urban Trial Freestyle: Evolved

Posted by PLWolf

Been having a blast with this on the Vita.

Posted by mosespippy

As much as I'd like to play a trials game I don't think I can support shameless copying of games.

Posted by ICantBeStopped

@mosespippy: You must not play very many games in this current gen then.

Posted by JasonR86

It might be the video but the frame rate looks bad. And the animations look bad too. I'm not feeling this game.

Posted by shamanultra

Is it me or has the video quality gone to shit recently? At some points it looks like an internet video from before youtube.

Posted by AdmiralStupid

Anyone else see the typo? "as far as fas possible" in the challenges menu?

Not too important, but it's the thing that stood out to me, for some reason.
