Flight Club in session!

Was scared for a few seconds that Vindog wasn't in this.

Been playing this for a while.

It has some serious issues like how it rewards you more if you don't play the objectives (usually the only thing you have to do is win is destroy the moving ground targets but destroying them gives you very few points compared to just shooting down planes) and how it's skewed towards planes with high calibre weapons.

It also doesn't seem to fit the historical and full realistic battle modes well.

It can be fun if you squad up with a few friends though.

In arcade and hisortical mode it's best to play mostly in third person view.

Also they prevent jets fighting against biplanes kind of situations with the matchmaking system. Matching people up by level, etc.

A word of warning, it currently does not support CrossfireX gpu configurations and will have serious graphics glitching/flickering.

They ripped that interface straight out of World of Warplanes.

@alibson: I think Warthunder beat Warplanes out the gate by 6 months.

Coffee...check.

Brownies...check.

The mood for watching 53 minutes of Drew flying a plane...check.

BRING ON THE WAR...Thunder.

Giantbomb has taught me everything I know about aerodynamics.

Historical battles is where its at, as long as you don't have a stick. Arcade is good enough to get yourself started and to understand the concept of leading your aim. HB will teach you about how air combat works and the three different styles of combat planes, super interesting stuff. I-i might even fish out WWII pilot biographies. I bet they have interesting tales.

FlaK is short for Flugabwehr Kanonen - Anti-Aircraft Cannon.

I believe these are the commercials Brad is talking about.

Nice try Drew. You did a good job pretending to NOT be a sleeper agent by flying only U.S. airplanes. But you gave yourself away to my discerning eyes when you used the kamikaze tactic, which is about as un-american of a military tactic as one can employ.

The second rule of flight club: OPEN THE GODDAMN WINDOW!

I think Vinny just implied (11m 14s) that Drew shot down TWA 800 when he was a kid. Bad Drew!

Just as an aside, the preferred way to play this game is with mouse & keyboard. You honestly don't need a joystick at all to play arcade or even historical. The controls are set up in such a way that a joystick and game pad are at a disadvantage to the mouse in arcade. The flight model is so loose you can just gun around shooting dudes in third person and still have fun.

That's not true though. Unless you're getting an average of maybe 10 kills per match, you can level up a whole lot faster by taking out ground targets.

It's not any more skewed towards planes with high calibre weapons than reality is.

FLIGHT CLUB!

There is fun, and then there is "serious fun"?

I just bought UH-1H Huey for 10 bucks on Steam. Compliments my A10c & Black Shark. At this point, you "can't go back"? Equally with racing games? Once you tasted the good stuff, there is no turning back?

Knowing is actually a totally OK movie. It's dumb in a few spots, but overall it's surprisingly good.

The sequel for this game is in Alpha right now. It's called Battle Lightning.

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History! That's some good shit right there.

Brad quick looks: a platform for his massive ego.

Has anyone ever just come right out and called him a know-it-all before?

No offense Brad, knowing things about stuff is rad, but relaying and correcting people constantly can be......off-putting?

Edit: What a badass looking flight game! I definitely want to play this for myself. Nice flying Drew!

Brad isn't so much a know-it-all as he just repeats half-remembered lines he reads while slacking off at work or idly browsing wikis. He just needs to put his damn phone away during quicklooks, podcasts, etc. And everyone else needs to tell him to put his damn phone away..

But hey, FLIGHT CLUB! Hey Vinny, remember that song we used to play when we sank the Yamato?

This may be in poor taste but did anyone else find it kind of weird that they posted a plane fighting simulator on 9/11 ?

The Beethoven song (7 no 2) is indeed in Knowing (never seen it though).

I've listened to a bunch of the episodes. I got to the last fall of the republic episode and oh crap it's more than 5 hours long. With as much of Roman history that he's covering, it would be cool if he dedicated a few episodes to the Jewish-Roman war.

FIRST TIME IN A PLANE, DAVE?

Edited by skelington_

@drewbert Did you ever play Birds of Steel? It was Gaijin's previous game in the series, released early last year for 360 and PS3. I thought I'd inquire as I haven't heard you reference the title before now. War Thunder seems to borrow a great deal of aesthetic and mechanical features from its predecessor.

Flak is short for Flugzeugabwehrkanone in German!

It really is as hard to say as it looks.

I just find it gratifying to learn a lot of things about a lot of things and try to share that stuff as much as I can, but wow, okay. Must be my massive ego instead.

@brad: Meh, I follow Giantbomb since it's first form as a blog and I never thought once that you're trying to polish up your ego. Just keep hitting us with the creepy bug facts ;).

There's a site that has Felix the Cat listed as public domain (http://free-universe.myartsonline.com/literature.html). Dunno if he is or not but holy shit Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is as well.

Now if you'll excuse me I must first draft my Moby Dick vs Gila Monster short film.

actually, if you look at Oswald's wikipedia, it says that NBC owned him for a long time for some reason, but was traded to Disney for Football commentator Al Michaels. Time to spend the rest of the day researching that fact because holy cow how amazing does that sound.

I met Brad once and I could barely fit in the room cuz his ego was just... suffocating. Motherfucker trying to teach me about spiders like he's Mr. Wizard or some shit.

Reminds me of this egotistical son of a bitch:

This is published by the same guys as Star Conflict, which is also a pretty fun f2p game with a crazy monetization system.

I just want a game where there's jets from the Gulf War era and they go as fast as they do in the BF1942 mod Desert Combat. None of that slow sissy stuff in bf3
