Oh well shit Drew, I guess this means you can't donate blood for another 12 months...

Posted by Keithcrash

Yay! Looking forward to this.

Posted by sub_o

So now Drew has turned around to fight our own countrymen. Let me inform our Dear Leader to blacklist him.

Posted by VicRattlehead

the audio jacked for anyone else or is it just me?

Posted by Village_Guy

All hail our glorious Supreme Leader of North Korea.

It's like they broadcasted this quick look from a bunker or a submarine. Haha. Or I guess, just incase they fix it later, at the time I posted this there's a weird deal with the audio.

What the hell is going on with the audio?

Posted by Spitznock

A tad too dense for this fella's vacant head space.

I've been a fan of Eugen's works for a long time. The beta of this game was interesting.

Game is only plagued with a really bad community, but otherwise an amazing RTS experience.

AUDIO IS FUCKED YA'LL.

DREW AND BRAD SOUND SO FAR AWAAAAAAAAY.

Posted by rcath

Did they record this in a submarine?

Edited by Borklund

No Brad, the campaign in this game is not based on "historical battles". There wasn't an all out war between South and North Korea in 1987. The Cold War never went hot. Jesus christ, what do they teach in American schools?

Posted by AlexanderSheen

The audio is fine here with the progressive quality.

Glad that this series is finally getting some attention!

Drew is absolutely right when he said this game is all about the multiplayer. The AI is pretty horrible and just kind of throws its units at you until you win. It's also important to mention that the "strategic" aspect is only in the single player campaigns and not in the multiplayer matches.

Also Drew, you gotta disembark your infantry! The command infantry was a good catch but recon infantry works the same way. They don't actually provide vision until they leave their transport vehicle. 10v10 matches are a good way to learn how the meat of the game is played. You should definitely check it out to get a feel for what tactics people use.

I might be beating a dead horse, but the audio sounds like it is panned all the way to the right.

Oh god, that chat.

Real time does not mean real battles.

Edited by Roland1979

This game looks thrilling. Want to play it so bad right now, but first finish the Souls series.TOW Missiles have quite a range range (irl) so i imagine you can take advantage of them and counter armored vehicles from a save distance while also leaving open escape routes.

I like watching this. I barely understand what's happening, but I don't need to for it to look awesome.

Edited by KillDeer

I think it's some sort of alternative history. Seems like they branched things off from here to a more extreme timeline http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gwangju_Democratization_Movement

Posted by Qblivion

@borklund: well if you watch more than 2 minutes they realise that...

Posted by MooseyMcMan

I really like the sound in this game. It sounds like a battle when it gets hot. (Well, at least to someone who actually hasn't been in combat.)

Did you guys see the in-game chat at the end of the video? Wow.

Sounds like you guys are recording inside a submarine.

@killdeer: Yeah, the Wargame series uses "what-if" scenarios for the campaigns. The intro to the Korean campaign describes the June Democracy Movement (it takes place in 1987, the Gwangju movement happened in 1980) and follows actual history right up to the point where it diverges and has North Korea invade.

The other three campaigns in Red Dragon explore a war between China and the USSR over the Vietnam-Cambodia conflict, a war between the UK and China based on the UK refusing to hand over Hong Kong and an invasion of Japan by the USSR after an escalation over the Kuril Islands.

The first game, European Escalation, explored a number of conflicts in central Europe between NATO and the USSR (such as the Soviets acting on their fears over Able Archer) while the second, Airland Battle, focused on a possible Scandinavian front of different WW3 scenarios.

Nothing more deflating than going on a Cold War losing streak.

Posted by falling_fast

these games are awesome. thanks, drew and brad

Posted by falling_fast

got a question, actually. does anyone know if all three games take place in the same alternate history timeline? or are they separate.

Posted by Applekid

@sarumarine: The other video they did with the dancing was the same way. I think Vinny or whoever does the mixing is slipping a little.

I think people are getting confused because the two armies did push each other all over the 38th parallel during the Korean war. And, no need to be so mean. They have been out of school for a very long time. Unless you studied these things in college, most people are going to remember them as it's simply useless information for them.

Did not expect this to get a QL, glad it did.

Don't let the armory/deck building scare you, Drew! Fantasizing about Cold War tech is half the fun of the game.

Edited by Nivash

@falling_fast: I don't think there's a "canon" to speak of, really. The last two campaigns of the first game did tie together, with the first ending in nuclear armageddon in 1984 and the final campaign taking place after said armageddon with the player pulling together a rag-tag bunch of units and hunting down the people responsible for ending the world. That is never referred to in the campaigns taking place after 1984.

So Eugen basically took historical events that could haven gone hot and worked from there but didn't link them - which makes sense really, there's no way you could fight WW3 to WW9 or whatever all in the space of the late 80s.

Honestly, that's true of every RTS. The communities are, across the board, the worst, even worse than FPS games.

Man, I love that Drew Quick Looks these types of games. Something I may have to check out myself.

Brad and Drew sound like they are in a bucket.

Man, this game SOUNDS great!

As someone who spent a good deal of time with Dwarf Fortress, this game looks intimidating.

Edited by thePoark

I'm a fan of Brad's, but he seems really disengaged in this Quick Look. I realize he's probably not invested/interested in the game, but Drew's excitement overshadows Brad's so much that it made the video feel a little awkward a times, like when someone pulls out their phone during a conversation.

You don't have to go to college to learn that the Koreas haven't been waging full scale war with eachother since the 50s, or to know that the cold war never got completely out of control and turned into WW3, at least not where I'm from. But yes, I overreacted, and they did eventually figure it out that no, it's not really real. It's also not useless information. To understand the relationship between the Koreas, which is especially important given the nature of the North Korean regime and what it's doing with its nuclear arms, you need to know history. Indeed, history is applicable to any news story/event on any given day. If you have no context for the Iraqi elections (to name one example), how are you supposed to understand it properly?

Those who do not learn from history are after all doomed to repeat it.

I know Drew is often very busy, but it would be really cool to have a live show of Drew doing a multiplayer match, just to get a better sense of this game at its strongest moments. Kinda of like one of those DOTA videos.

Drewbert, Your Arty Coy didn't join the fight because it was out of initiative.

In order to join the fight, a unit needs 1 Initiative. Kind of confusing.

Also, you should totally take advantage of "deep cover", like forests.

Here's an RTS with barrens chat on the site. Rofl, spilled a little of my coffee when he said that lol.

@mb: Yeah I only noticed it in the last five seconds but whoa. Seems really bad.

Game itself looked interesting, might check it out.

This audio in this is all kinds of weird. It sounds like Brad and Drew are speaking directly into my brain. That or they are recording it inside a tank for authenticity. I'm not sure which.
