Not like this.

God I hate the atmosphere and " attitude " of this game soooo damn much.

No /lute? Fuck this game.

Edited by Pilecki

Wow clone you say? $15/month you say? Ummmmm no... just no... bad mr. kitty! *Sprays dev in face with cold water*

@steadyingmeat: Interesting, many people feel the exact opposite, myself included! Care to elaborate?

MMOs usually bore me, but I feel like this was bored me more than most of the MMO QLs I've seen. Maybe it's just because Vinny wasn't there (which is not to say the commentary was bad, mind you).

Also, this game's Dominion is pretty weak compared to DS9's Dominion.

Yaaay, a video of brad running around one area killing the same enemy for an hour. Little did he know that he was supposed to walk up to one of those guys in the cage from the beginning and hit T. Just making another competent MMO look bad, same old same old. Love you, Brad.

Not interested in playing this but I would like to see rorie get into a dungeon.

Posted by ChrisTaran

I played in some of the stress test betas and was not particularly fond of the game. It wasn't bad mind you, just nothing that made me want to pick up the game when it launched.

Posted by ildon

"Maybe guild chat will help answer some questions."

*Brad proceeds to completely ignore guild chat for duration of quick look.*

@tenorsounds: Different people have different senses of humor. Not much more to elaborate on.

I have never touched this game nor will I and I even saw those cages and thought why didn't he even look at those.

@tenorsounds: Because its not funny while thinking its hilarious and tries to be 'extreme' while being silly and measured so it is more generally accepted. Its like it was designed by an energetic 14 year old who thinks he is awesome and hilarious when he is in fact not those things.

Posted by Tenorsounds

@ildon: Yeah you're right, why did I even bother. Discussing differing opinions and trying to garner a better understanding thereof is dumb.

Posted by danlongman

I got a bit annoyed by Alex insulting the guy healing Brad.

This looks pretty tempting to me. I haven't played wow in 3 years and this looks to scratch that itch.

BRING THE SASS, RORIE!

digging the animation, but not those ps2 quality textures and lack of shadows

Because he's Brad at games.

It's definitely not the game to revitalize the genre but it does all of the familiar so god damn well, and wraps it all in an aesthetic that I at least think is pretty amazing.

But yeah, they do kind of lay the attitude on pretty damn thick but the degree to which they just fuckin' go for it makes me smile.

Edited by darkest4

"Rat dude went to the planet and... clicked on stuff" Haha Jeff, sometimes your haterade and snark is just too hilarious not to laugh at.

Sometimes listening to Rorie talk about WoW for the millionth time makes me feel really uncomfortable for him, maybe it's just my own deep seated shame from playing the game too much in the past.

Game looks competent enough but after playing some EQ Landmark, EQ Next is the only MMO that looks like it could be unique enough to make me interested in the genre again, voxels are fucking cool.

BRAD PULL THE CAMERA OUT.

The instances in this game are brutally hard to this point. They are tuned up to the extreme at launch.

Wait, is it ten years ago?

That graphics engine sure looks like it.

Posted by CornBREDX

Saying Wildstar is like Wow is really reductive. I'm interested to see what their impressions of the game are, though, as I didn't get to catch this live. This should be interesting.

You are closer than you may think...take a look at this interview from mid 2013 with one of the WildStar developers:

Step one for us, was to decide what we could use off the shelf, and to see where it would take us. Back in 2005 we knew we had a few years of R&D time, so we evaluated a few off-the-shelf engines and, while these engines would let us show off some fancy graphics in year one, they didn’t look like they’d scale to our needs 5+ years later. We decided to spend a majority of our work home brewing the correct solution for each problem.

The developer isn't explicitly clear in the interview exactly how much of the WildStar engine is off the shelf and how much they coded themselves at Carbine. What is clear is that the engine is ten years old just as you suspected.

Guy in chat at 1:06:20 lol... Klepek can't catch a break!

The combat looks like it might be entertaining by MMO standards, but man alive do the visuals and "attitude" not appeal to me at all.

That super-chunky, low-poly visual style worked decently when WoW did it 10 years ago, but now it just doesn't look good.

has everything come full circle and now trying to trick us into something that's been out?...hmmm...what is this? I feel like some small game is out out just like this

I don't think another quest based, themepark MMO is what I'm looking for anymore. I tried to like this one in beta but it feels too much like what I've played before (the sci-fi veneer just isn't enough for me).

As Rorie said the quest grind is a means to an end, but I really feel like it's one that could just be cut from MMOs at this point. If end game dungeons and raids are where the fun is at then why do we continue to repeat the same stagnant level grind in MMOs? And while more action based combat is nice, if it's just applied to the same old systems does it really change things that much? It just seems like you end up more active in repeating the same tired gameplay loop that MMOs have been stuck in for years.

Cynicism spews forth in unrelenting waves in this drag of a Quick Look, makes it an aggravating experience. Please edit the live stream videos next time.

I feel like there is no way one could keep up with the rate that people consume content if all they had was this end game 'payoff' and none of the ramp up. Let alone the part where they obviously want you to be dropping a ton of time into the game to maximize how much they're likely to get from you.

Well they have to, in case something worthwhile actually shows up.

Until then, we wait.

And mock.

Or just watch it and then get on with your life. The quick look was fine.

Plenty of people are sick to death of the MMO formula. Videos like this are how we see what direction they are heading in, and it turns out it is the exact same direction as always. I would be cynical about that too. In fact, I am. This game is disappointing.

the thing i don't get about mmo's is how similar they all are in design. the genre should, i think, have a ton of diversity as the main tenets are mostly persistent world with a lot of players coming in and out all the time and some rpg elements. instead, i can look at an mmo for 10 seconds without prior knowledge it is an mmo and say with pretty solid authority that the game i am looking at is definitely an mmo.

I guess i'm saying developers should pay more attention to Eve. Or something. I dunno.

Posted by Fearbeard

Hmm.. I'm just going to assume they have barely put any time into the game and they aren't going to show any of the interesting content past level 10.

To be fair though, the game does not do much to distinguish itself early on.

I'm having a blast with it from levels 10-15 though and am eager to see more.

"This game is really easy."

Kite Co failed their one job.

Posted by rusalkagirl

@verio: I like MMOs, and this even seems quite crap to me. *shrug*

Posted by Karkarov

Anyone who thinks this game plays anything like WoW other than "you press buttons" and "they are both MMO's" either never played either game or is just stupid.

Quick looking an mmo before the "first dungeon" levels is pointless. No mmo is ever that exciting at low levels. So Giant Bomb keeps quick looking them at.... low levels.

Internet fame, I've arrived!

I mainly just want to say that if you feel like the game is funneling you between different fights its because you picked a combat heavy focus (as you are a swordsman and a soldier) which focuses entirely on combat.

The path system is actually super important so if you wanted to explore more, with reason to do so, you should pick explorer as your path. You would find yourself having a completely different experience with that.

Other than that the quick look seems apt. I, personally, have found my time with Wild Star super enjoyable. I think it's a much more refreshing experience than most every MMO that comes out these days. I haven't been bored with it yet, and that's rare for an MMO anymore it seems.

Also, I have not had the trouble with loot that Brad is expressing. I get gear loot constantly. This may also have something to do with his path choice or the way he plays as you get a ton of loot from challenges and path questing.

Edited by Addfwyn

Having spent all my free time on this game since it came out, it's hooked me in a way a mmo since WoW hasn't. It's a really fun game, albeit really hard for a modern MMO.

The UI is pretty bad but thankfully really modular. The path stuff is probably my favourite feature. The art and music I like too.

It feels like a MMO, but it does a lot to innovate too. The amount of customization (good god housing) is huge. Can't speak for what endgame will be like, but the developer gives me a lot of confidence.

Edited by cocun

Well, it's another Brad quick look that's for sure.
