I will buy this game, and I will likely enjoy it for what it is. The setting looks interesting, and the new engine is gorgeous.

That said, my gut tells me this isn't going to be in the running for any 'Game of the Year" awards. The gameplay they keep showing off looks competent, and probably even fun - but not memorable, y'know?

It seems like just another blood and dirt spattered future dystopia shooter. I hope it manages to surprise me a bit.

I'm pretty sure it is.

Other than the graphics, I don't see what's so great about this game. After playing through Deus Ex Human Revolution, this looks kind of boring. It doesn't offer alternative options like Fallout 3/New Vegas or Deus Ex does. It just looks like an open world shooter with no real incentive to explore other than to horde ammo. Unless there are some RPG mechanics I did not know about, I'm not too interested in buying Rage.

I want this game, but watching the lip syncing, facial animation and character motion on the colonel, I mean mayor, kind of bugs me...a lot. I don't know what it is with games lately, they get all the time building environments and modelling characters/props, but when it comes to animation they let it sort of fall to the wayside.

The lip-syncs seem to be slapped together very lazily and the facial animations are even worse. It looks as though his eyebrows are taped to his hair line and he's struggling to keep his eyebrows down. And when I say Plutonium, my lips actually pucker together like any right speaking human being would with the "PUH" sound.

LA Noire has some pretty amazing tech in the game to automate the facial animations, but it seems like they put no time into the bi-ped motions, so it looks like a robot with human expressions.

It's not an RPG, it's an FPS? In the same way i wouldn't go to Deus Ex or Fallout for good shooting, why would i expect this balls out shooter to offer the same as them?

But yeah, i guess if you're looking for an RPG and not an FPS, don't go for Rage...but we all knew that anyway right?

Please don't tell me that the new Deus Ex is like Fallout 3/New Vegas. I haven't bought it yet and it would really depress me if the combat was that bad.

@Besetment: The shooting is certainly better then Fallout but really not the focus of the game. It's not fast, responsive and precise like a Call of Duty but if you sneak you're way around and fuck up you can shoot your way through a tough spot if needed.

Dude they have been working on Rage and this engine sense the release of Doom 3 Have you seen any Id games out? This is the only thing they have done so No they haven't thrown Doom 4 by the wayside they have already said it is their next project...and as someone who liked what Little story Doom 3 did have..don't think it was anything worth getting upset over for the next one I want a new Doom, if it doesn't mention Dr. Betruger (sp?) Kelly or Swan I really wouldn't care, I just want a shiny new Doom with some More umph in the weapons and a God DAMN Flashlight attached to my gun.

No its not. Modern Fallout games might be bug ridden, but both Deus Ex and Fallout 3 offer you multiple ways to play. You can talk your way out of a situation, strong arm people to get what you want, go in guns blazing, or go in stealth. You gain experience points for different actions and can level up skills that each accommodate certain play styles. The only difference is that Deus Ex isn't open world, but a more focused and concentrated game and is better, production quality-wise, as a result. The original Deus Ex combined FPS and RPG mechanics that inspired modern Fallout games, so it's only natural that its sequel shares similarities to the games inspired by it's predecessor.

It's because they combine both RPG and FPS elements, but the shooting is Deus Ex is much better that Fallout 3 and New Vegas.

Its not suppose to offer alternate routes or options or any real RPG elements. Its an FPS game that also has racing elements to it. You don't "level up" per se, but rather every mission you do you get a new weapon/ammo type/upgrade/whatever. I'm assuming a number of missions can be taken in no specific order, so its up to you what you go for first.

Also, it has a multiplayer compoment, something Deus Ex/Fallout 3 and New Vegas don't offer. There's competitive multiplayer, and also racing, AND also some co-op missions. There is also split screen co-op.

Its not this deep epic like the other two games you mentioned; however, thats not a bad thing. If you want depth, theres definitely other games. This though, is a shooter first and foremost. And thats not necessarily a bad thing.

Yeah I suppose so. I just wonder if there is enough weapons, tools, and ammo types to keep you going through the game. I've enjoyed open world games like GTA and Red Dead, but the formula has worn on me. Going from mission giver to mission giver and traveling in between each one can be a pain. There are games that are shooters first, but do shooters need to be open world? Far Cry 2 had also left a bad taste in my mouth cause it was a pure shooter that did not benefit from the open worldliness of it, but had been hindered by it. Borderlands was saved by the fact that it had a lot of loot and gave you incentive to go about the big open world, even then it was a chore to travel at times and dragged, especially on foot in big mission areas.

I don't doubt that Rage will be a quality game, but I've just grown tired of the open world formula and shooters in general. And it seems to me Rage isn't offering anything outside of that, which I suppose it doesn't have to. I guess Rage just isn't for me.

heard of a company called Valve? ;)

Any how DooM 4 is the next game for id software and will use id tech 5. What I've heard it will not have a 60 fps lock so it will be way better looking than Rage.

You can talk your way out of a situation, strong arm people to get what you want, go in guns blazing, or go in stealth. You gain experience points for different actions and can level up skills that each accommodate certain play styles.

By describing the games at such an abstract, conceptual level, and by omitting the huge variety of ways the games differ, it's pretty easy to make the games seem the same.

The original Deus Ex combined FPS and RPG mechanics that inspired modern Fallout games, ...

Fallout 3 is the product of Bethesda adapting Interplay's prior Fallout games into Oblivion's Gamebryo engine. At no point did they need to look to Deus Ex for inspiration, they had ample source material. Also, Deus Ex is not the first FPS/RPG hybrid. Games like System Shock 2 predate Deus Ex.

The only difference is that Deus Ex isn't open world, but a more focused and concentrated game and is better, production quality-wise, as a result.

Hey, there's no need to start selling Fallout short. Fallout 3 won a lot of GOTY awards, it's a fantastic game. New Vegas would be a 5 star game here on GB if it weren't for all the bugs it shipped with.

I have read all your comments - not gonna watch the video. (I will buy this game, so why ruin the incoming experience?)

When id software joined Zenimax/Bethesda Softworks, I had this huge boner for a couple days, thinking, "if only the id games would make love to the Bethesda games!". Megatextures 2.0 and John Carmack's tech genius, combined with Todd Howard's RPG DNA ... these two companies can only benefit from each other? (And it seems, they already do - meeting/talking to each other).

As for RAGE - I tell myself almost every day: "THIS IS NOT THE GAME I IMAGINE IT TO BE" (I want RAGE to be a Fallout3 meets Doom3 meets Borderlands clone - but it is most likely not).

Keep in mind that Rage was under development long before the partnership took place between id software and Zenimax, so think we will see more collaborations in the future, like id tech 5...6...7... being used in games like Fallout perhaps.

The game looks interesting but the fact that it took that many rockets to kill a single dude really bums me out, it kinda reminds me of the rocket launchers in Borderlands, looked cool but it was more show than go.

Yes, yes, It does look like just another Fallout/Borderlandsish shooter. But I don't think that is in anyway a bad thing. I love those settings. Much better than just another modern warfare shooter which takes even less imagination to make in my opinion.

When he takes down the first turret deployed, at the bottom left of the screen you can see he gets some crafting materials back from it (I assume).  So it looks like it will have a pinch of RPG type stuff at least?

I'm down for a straightforward FPS, though.  I've played the crap out of BF:BC2 & Borderlands, and will be playing the crap out of BF3 & Borderlands 2.  I don't care if Rage isn't RPG or multiplayer driven...the FPS genre isn't exactly short on those types of games ^_^v
