Missed the part where it has a disposable jetpack unit attached and several people in these comments pointing that out, did you?

My thing is it seemed like it didn't really have the clearance to fall safely. Seems like it moved a whole lot laterally before getting fully clear of the bay.

Seems strange that they just dropped the Atlas right down without any sort of drop pod. Normally, Mechs are inserted via drop pods to protect them from reentry heat. Atlases also don't have any jump jets...

Yes, I'm sure the free to play revival of a series that has been off the map for years is going to be very careful about honouring the previously established fiction.

Actually why wouldn't they? The previously established fiction being the novels and tabletop game (which itself is doing well), not previous Mechwarrior games (though there is some weird cross pollination on that end).

I mean if you are going to have hundreds of hours of free background being made up for you, why not? It's not like a free falling 100 ton brick makes a lot of sense anyways.

@White: The way I see it there are plenty of bad F2P models and penty of good ones. I've seen both, we have to wait and see how they handle it for this game. There is usually no upkeep they way you put it anyway, with plenty good ones never requiring payment at all.

As far as f2p attracting a bigger audience? Fuck yea it will, that's kind of the point of the entire thing and the main reason everyone who does it does it. People that would have never considered battletech (or heard of it) will give this at least a try, just because it's free.

They already have the dedicated fanbase in either case. But in the first case they tried, that dedicated fanbase was not enough to justify the full retail product, moneywise according to their estimates. There are just not enough people interested in a Battletech sim currently, regardlerss of their passions. So the f2p online only plan solves both issues, bigger audience and potentially a smaller budget since they don't have to invest into SP.

I wish this was a full retail game obviously.

But beggers can't be choosers. There has not been a battletech mech sim in ages, and this is the only thing we got or are likely to get in any forseaable future.

Wait. Did that new MechWarrior became this?

Yep, they could not get the full on MW5 rolling (this started out as MW5) so they decided to shift it to F2P

God dammit. If they have the shitty damage numbers popping out like that Reign of Thunder game I'm giving up all home on western mech games. That and Doom/Quake-like twitchy controls in game FULL OF GIANT ROBERTS.

Reign of Thunder bullshit is directly the dudes who did the Mech Assault arcadey silliness for the consoles going further in that direction.

These dudes pretty much already started making MW5 with cockpits and heat/ammo/customisation the whole shebang. Then after 1-2 years (i'm not sure exactly) realised they don't have the budget for a full on $60 release and would shift the direction to online only game. As such a F2P model became more attractive to them. Rather then say putting out the game for $30 and everyone forgettgin about it after a few weeks. With f2p they would be able to keep adding and expanding the game easilly.

Obviously there is no way to tell for sure exactly how it will turn out in the end. But as a fan of Battletech I'm comfortable with the above knowledge, so far.

I am not a fan of F2P, Pay to own. Absolutely against the idea of paying an upkeep on my game too - beyond the initial money-down. Do they really think they'll attract an audience beyond their already dedicated fanbase and/or robert-loving dudes by making it F2P? These people will buy their game regardless - $20, $60 or even $120.

@Delta_Ass: Well, you CAN add jump jets to whatever 'mech you want (allowing for tonnage and space), it's just a complete pain to do so. Kind of like installing a new gun on a 'mech. Or.. well, ANY customization of 'mechs. OmniMechs ftw!

You can only mount jump jets on OmniMechs. The Mechlab in MW2 and onwards was much more flexible than actual Omni customization.

No the mech design/structure needs to be able to acommodate jump jets, and many mechs have no provisions either space wise or structure wise to install them. That said at phenomenal expense some non jump jet capable mechs have been jurry rigged with jets from time to time. But it's expensive, questionable, dangerous and usually not worth the effort. Don't remember how it was in MW3 exactly, but the above is as far as overall universe cannon is concerned.

In the trailer the Atlas just has a disposable harness attached for the drop. People are freaking out because of something as simple as not paying attention.

My bad. I probably mix this up with hull damage, although I seem to recall some kind of "shield like" display of the hull. Also thought you could focus defense against certain directions but that also probably comes from mix-up with Freespace 2 and other games at the time. I've been out of the loop for so long its starting to fade away, although the sweet memories of severing the limbs of giant mechs and the mood still linger. :) When it comes to battletech I dont know all that much, except from what I learnt by playing the good old game by the same name. I know there are some differences from the MW pc game franchise, and I know I love giant mechs, but I guess that sticking to the bt rules generally is a good idea as its more "pure".

Regarding the engine management, what you describe is what I'm aiming at. Worst thing that could happen would be a simplified heat system (basically engine management as lack of speed kills, and everything you do in terms of prioritization affects the speed).

Anyhow, nevertheless I'm excited to see what will come out of this.

'Mechs don't have shields. Ever. Not in my Battletech! And engine management.. nah, it's all about the heat (which granted should run higher depending on speed and of cousre weapons, heatsinks, etc)

Also, the BattleMaster better be in the game. Favorite 'Mech ever right there!

Since Catalyst Game Labs (the pretty great company that handles board game Battletech stuff) secured the rights to use it again back in 2009 from what I've seen, the only thing preventing the classic Battlemaster design (or a slightly altered version of it, as they seem to change everything a bit) from appearing is whether Piranha wants to use it or not. So hope, or maybe ask them nicely, I think.

@Beomoose: @Buzzkill: There actually have been several instances where Atlas mechs were super heavily modified to incorporate jump jets.

As for the trailer, that Atlas has disposable breaking thrusters (or jets) attached. Similar in function to say how you dropped onto Griffin base at the end of the last game.

I find it odd that they would eject the entire clamp system along with the mech. I know it's being pedantic, but being a mech sim you would expect that kind of attention to detail.

EDIT: Oh wait, nevermind. This explains it. It's a jumpjet harness

Yes, I'm sure the free to play revival of a series that has been off the map for years is going to be very careful about honouring the previously established fiction.

They're sure as hell seem to be doing a better job of it than previous games. Although the whole lowering the pilot into the 'mech thing is a bit odd. Also, low orbit drop, maybe? At least it had disposable jump-packs.

Anyway, the important thing about this is, IMO is:

1. The voice. I've missed it so much.

2. The voice. Seriously!

3. Hmm, artstyle.

It's possible to attach jump packs to battlemechs without jump jets for in-atmosphere drops such as this. I'm assuming that's the yellow apparatus still attached to the Atlas at around 1:10.

Not exactly. If I recall correctly, the neural interface is responsible for the more subtle aspects of mech control. The pilot's brain augments the mech's reflexes and sense of balance. The control stick directs a mech forward, but the brain prevents a mech from tipping over.

This trailer is clearly fake. A genuine trailer would have had dubstep in it.
