Ryan needed to use his magic more and the big guys would have went down easy.  Especially the shield one considering the charge breaks his defense and puts him on his back.

Thanks for letting me know to never buy this game. 

 I was stuck on this part forever, then I turned down the difficulty to the easiest and did it in one try. Worst part of the game by far, and I liked the game.

use the cross the entire time, thank me later.

guess its a Rental now.

haha i was in the college library and totally got all excited when you beat it, i still haven't beaten that part going on a week now, but i now know it can be done so ill keep trying haha

With all the similarities to God of War I keep hearing about, that series has never had something this frustrating necessary for beating the game (the challenges on the other hand...)

At this point, I would simply eject the disk, put it in the case. And then drive to my nearest Gamestop and cash it in.

What's funny is that the quotes in the loading screen seem to suggest that playing the game is hell. This is a bad, bad game mechanic.  It's things like this that have pulled me away from single-player action games (like God of War, DMC, etc.) altogether.

Wow this just tells me to avoid this game.

I have two concurrent thoughts watching this: 
 
1.) Whose version of fun is this? 
 
2.) Relief. Relief that I am not alone in my inability to get through ridiculous sections like this on my first go. It makes me feel just a little better than I am not the only person on the internet who gets frustrated at sections like this. I'm sorry you had to go through that, but I'm sure it helped more than just me.

Let us descend down to greater woe. XD Great vid, even if its at the cost of Ryan's threshhold of just going HAEEEETTTT.

You need the cross. Its in the first 2 levels of holy. Stand in the center and spam it. Using magic can create too long of a delay and break the combo. Jumping and pausing breaks it.  This is the only way I was able to "cheap it" and get through the game. It took me about 23 times before I found this out and then a few more to perfect it. Good Luck Ryan. 
 
BTW I yelled more during this game than any other. Pissed me off more than any other in a LONG time.

ryans gonna be screwed on the final boss since he hasent leveled up the cross attacks at all!

ha ha.  i had this exact same problem.  
There are 2 relics tha u must use, if u have them of course.
One makes u un-intertuptible during cross attacks.
One increases the time allowence for combos between attacks.
Use both of these relics and use a lot of cross attacks.

Poor Ryan. I really detest parts like this, and was thinking about picking this game up when it hit the bargain bin but not after this video.

the best way i found this was stick get the super cross combo + the relic that extends your combo window, and then simply hammer the B button until they''re all dead.

also u can dial down the difficulty, there's not achievements for completing the game on different difficulties

That still isn't an excuse to force players to play through ridiculous challenges that should be an extra unlock after beating the game instead. "

There's a relic that increases the time the combo meter stays active.  I had it fully upgraded and beat this on my first try.  Barely.

They arent exactly "ridiculous."  By that i mean they are in no way comparable to the challenges in (for example) Bayonetta, which were truly brutal, and appropriately optional.   The challenges in dantes were a breeze next to some of the bullshit non-"challenge" portions of the game that made me want to snap my controller in half :) "

There's a relic that increasing the "window" between a combo ending by 3 seconds. There's also a spell called Sins of the Father that juggles multiple enemies in the air. I was able to finish this challenge on hard mode with these two methods in 40 seconds.

This whole arena fight chapter seemed like Visceral Games ran out of either ideas or time, and I know that they can do great stuff so it kind of saddens me that the end of this otherwise good game is marred by this lazy inclusion.

I often wish I had a miniature nerd in my pocket I could pull out in games like this and hand him the controller: "Here, little nerd. YOU do it!"

Me and a friend blasted through the challenges easily. The combo one was simple as hell, just blast crosses in all directions (if you have it upgraded) and you should be fine.

This just seems fucking dumb

I am feeling Ryan's frustration all through this.  It's as if I'm the one playing it, not him.

Wait, why are they playing god of war 1?  Ohhh, its dante's inferno... oh..... well I sure can't wait for god of war 3!!!!!!!!! Anyway, great vid Ryan! 

Yeah, I think I'll wait until this is $20, and maybe pick it up then if I'm not having too much fun with the likes of Just Cause 2.  I'll tolerate crazy hard areas and challenges for the REAL God of War games, but not for lame clones.

At least they were able to get some video content out of Ryan's torment, though I doubt the trade-off was worth it! 
 
Either way, I am glad this had a happy ending. Watching this though makes me lose pretty much all my interest in playing it right now. I don't want to play any of these types of games until after I am done with God War III.

Awesome, a challenge like this on a god of war clone with broken combos. I gave up playing this game when I went back and played a bit of GoW2 to compare the combat mechanics.
 
Amazing it got so great reviews, even from Destructoid, but then I recall that dtoid used the $200 check sent as PR and everything made sense.

Ahaha, you can hear him mashing the buttons during the intervals.

Haven't watched all the video so I don't know if this has been stated, but there is a relic that extends the amount of time between hits to keep the counter going. Also I got through almost all these challenges by just spamming the cross attack.

Oh man.  Just watching Ryan try and do this challenge makes me not want to play this game.

I'd rather have a game bring out pure frustration or elation than indifference which is indeed the most vitriolic of sentiments to a game developer.
Just ask the guys working on CnC4!

This one was tough, I just pressed B Non-stop! Definitely the least fun part of the game
 
yikes! you exclusively leveled up the sytche, why no love for st.lucia, it improves your cross power + combos.. wouldve made this a lot easier dude :)
