Great job but I didn't like the tonal difference from the first to second game.In the first game he sounded like he was tempting you to do evil, like the snake tempted eve but in the second game he's always shrieking,it's lost all the subtlety.

I can imagine that is how he did every Faith No More album: nondescript single sheet of paper, weird noises, repeat.

For the most part, I'll be glad when video games get past this.

Certainly have in many ways.

It's a little more than screaming stuff. It includes gravelly voices, over the top acting, and that sort of thing. It always comes off to me as characters in cartoons. Not that I am necessarily opposed to unrealistic VOs and such, but it seems that we too often get voice work that doesn't appeal to me. Maybe video games have some years left to overcome certain tropes.

I suppose maybe we need more ultimately evil, masterfully manipulative people in video games sounding or acting similar to these examples:

^Put the link there for this other one (embedding is disabled) from Ray Fiennes in Schindler's List set to some music some of you may recognize from a video game commercial and popular song a few years ago.

Of course movies have examples of kinda crappy voice work as well, but it can slide from time to time as it does in other media--Batman's voice in The Dark Knight for example. We accept it in video games and movies, because it's too frequent; it's much more frequent in video games though from my experience. It's bothersome to me a little, and it would be nice to see more great voice work in those fantastical settings that video games can portray.

I want to make sure that I point out that I think there are great performances in video games, but not so great ones are easier to accept.

@nrh79: It's just a part of voice acting is to be a little over-the-top.You're working with the voice a lot more to create a tone to the game, so it'll be more hammy and exaggerated a lot of the time.

Plus, and not to get nitpicky, you're showing something completely different with the clip there. The Darkness is a demon serpent thing that is loud and violent and is already in possession of Jackie, but Satan is trying for temptation, attempting a subtler seduction to take his prey over to evil.'

I agree that gravelly voices need to go. It's a good way to stop me from caring.

I know it has its place, but it doesn't necessarily need it or benefit from that. Perhaps it fits the tone, but maybe the tone of the game could use some work. Not saying that I know for sure, and I definitely don't know the steps that were taken to get where the devs were when they decided to take the course they did.

Edit: I also have not played the game, so there is ignorance on my part about some of this. The game may have some elements I'm not considering.

His voice is awesome, and he is perfect as The Darkness, however I feel that his performance was better in the first one, he sounded more demonic and threatening there, plus he has far more lines. It's like in the second one they cut in lines in half, maybe cause it's so short?

This was my number one problem with TD 2. The Darkness was almost underplayed, and the chemistry between Jackie and The Darkness and them hating each other gets way to little concern.

Also, they should do one of these commercials with the guy who does Johnny Powell. That guy is amazing.

I understand the fact that you prefer the subtil evil, but the Darkness isn't. It's an entity bent on ultimate destruction. It just isn't subtle and wouldn't fit the ''character'' at all, especially since it has multiple tones, as if it was possessed by multiple personalitlies at the same time.

Had you played the Darkness games, you would have seen for yourself.
