It's super annoying that this is on a handheld. Especially since it doesn't look as good at SMT: Nocturne. Those battles looked exactly like the other portable SMT games for the DS. While those games were fine. I would think they'd go with something much more dynamic and interesting for SMT 4.

It's been a while since I've read up on it, so sorry if I'm wrong, but in Japanese the "a" is always pronounced like the "a" in "father". Which would explain how samurai is pronounced in this video.

@solidocelot: I imagine the cost of producing a 360/PS3 (or PS4/whateverthefuckthenewxboxis) game vs what a game like this would sell on those consoles is a factor.

Because it's cheaper to make and they don't sell enough to warrant a bigger budget and to be put on the bigger platforms. As much as I hate it, I don't see it going away anytime soon unless JRPG's suddenly become hugely popular again.

Sah-murai? I haven't heard it like that, and I can't even tell what the right pronunciation is (spoiler alert: you don't encounter the word 'samurai' a lot in Japanese).

I thought the 'a' was like in 'hat', but in the video it sounds more like a 'o' as in 'hot'. The second a (in ai) should have the same sound. I pronounce the 'a' in "father" the same as in 'hat' but I guess that could change depending on English dialect.

Not just by a little bit, it's honestly a huge difference. The 3DS has already outsold the PS3 in Japan. It did so six months ago, so after only 18 months on the market or so. I would expect any game that's aimed primarily at the Japanese audience (as SMT titles most surely are) to release on a handheld at this point. Console releases are for games that prioritize the western audience. So Resident Evil? Console. Monster Hunter 4? 3DS.

That's definitely the Japanese pronunciation of "samurai" (except for the hard 'r'), though it does still sound a bit strange.

@video_game_king: "Saw" is the correct Japanese pronunciation. Pronouncing it like the name Sam is phonetically incorrect.

I was going to reply to this with "I want to make a game called 'Samurai Sam' just to fuck with people", but a quick Google search put an end to that.

As a heads up, the main character is a silent protagonist, as per SMT traditions. It is his friend (Issachar, Isakal? I'm not exactly sure what the localization is) that is making all the noise about being a sawmoorye.

And I'm already pretty annoyed with all the Persona references this has already gotten. At least it isn't as bad as the youtube video's comments.

@mcghee Well it maybe 1492, but obviously a lot of things seem anachronistic for the time period (i.e. the gauntlet comps) so obviously there is more than what is being told. Just like at the end of the video it is like "OR IS THERE MORE!?!?" Well obviously there is more than that in a Shin Megami Tensei game.

Another interesting thing about the game is the fact that apparently there are no direct ties to I, II, III: Nocturne, or Strange Journey (aside from the Black Harmonica Demonica...wow I'm tired.), so it'll be interesting to see where the story goes.

It's been that way for years and I'm guessing because it's cheaper and less risky. Kind of just how this generation went. If you want JRPGs, look toward handhelds. The stuff released on consoles just isn't as plentiful which is unfortunate for people who like to play on a couch with a big TV.

A decent chunk of SMT games have battles in first person. As I understand it they're making it 3D outside of combat like in Nocturne (SMT3) and having battles in first person like in Shin Megami Tensei 1 & 2.

Nice! I've been playing Strange Journey to cope with the wait and for anyone disappointed about the lack of 3D battles, you get used to the first person battles real quick. The fusion and battle systems are so addicting that it doesn't really matter after awhile.

I'm pretty excited that they're adding 3D exploration in this one though since the first person exploration can feel a little outdated.

@sidoran: Yeah. Most games in the series feature battles presented in that style.

So I made my previous comment after just seeing the image capture... So that is a dude... the fuck?

This game is looking to be extremely inspired by the first game, and I mean there are a lot of mirrored things from it. From previews I read even the very beginning of the game has a cutscene that sounded almost exactly like the intro to SMT I. There is also a ton of remixed music from the first two games, you have your law and chaos heroes, whose names could possibly be inspired from Kaneko's writings on the first two law and chaos heroes (the first syllable sound), and even STEVEN. Granted there are plent of things that they have improved upon from what it seems and I'm so damned hyped for this release, especially after playing through the first three games already.

I saw nothing but "Persona V" as the title and was going wtf as I watch the trailer
