@assinass: Man I wanted so badly to like Dustforce but just never got used to the controls. Real bummer. But yeah there's definitely cool stuff out there.

Not seeing anything interesting here. I'm sure it does what it sets out to do, but what it's doing isn't anything that seems like what I want to play. I'm sure this will be fine for those that are into 2D platformers, but I don't get it.

@assinass: I agree with you, but like a lot of people, the retro aesthetic just does nothing for me anymore because the last couple years of oversaturation by indie platformers have killed it. My eyes glaze over watching the Shovel Knight trailer the way a lot of people's do watching the Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare trailer. I think that game looks super solid but I get why someone else might be tired of yet another dudebro military shooter.

On the other hand, my eyes completely glaze over watching gameplay for The Order 1886 because even though it looks really nice and has a cool setting, it's really hard to get excited these days for yet another standard-as-fuck third-person cover shooter.

You mentioned Guacamelee in a different post and that's exactly what I want from the indie scene. I loved that game. It didn't hide behind a retro aesthetic that everyone else has already done. It took a very different aesthetic that nobody else is using and built a really awesome game around that. It's bold as fuuuuck in its art design and does something new that a big budget game wouldn't be able to do.

I have nothing against Shovel Knight, personally, but it's really hard to get excited these days for yet another indie retro platformer, even if it is super solid, and that's a bummer.

I totally get you, when games start looking the same in the same genre, it just becomes visually unexciting. If you want a 2D platformer with some of the coolest art design, Pid is it.

And Dustforce (with an amazing soundtrack):

I'm excited about this game- would love to see it get a Vinnyvania treatment. I don't really get why people are worked up about the description to the video...to me it just implies that the trailer accurately represents the old school gameplay found in the game. Also I'm pretty comfortable with being advised to buy a game if someone has played it for even a short amount of time - especially a gameplay mechanics driven game like this. It's not a review, it's an impression - and I have been well served by Patrick's gameplay impressions in the past.

I kinda get the negativity because I play a fuckton of indie games and I can see how some people would get burned out on this stuff, but it looks like an alright game regardless. Nothing worth putting on a pedestal. Hell, most people probably never even heard of Kero Blaster.

This trailer is shit though. I'm not a fan of supercuts.

I'm kind of surprised by the amount of negativity in the comments. I think the game looks incredible. And yeah, a lot of that is due to nostalgia, but beyond that it just looks like a tight, fast-paced platformer.

@dorkymohr@posh: It's because it changes the context of "a game website posting a trailer because they're a game website duh" to "this is an advertisement." The language of just straight-up "don't hesitate to buy this" is so naked compared to something more personal like "this game seems awesome" and that makes it off-putting even though we trust and like Patrick and know nothing insidious is going on.

Not the end of the world or whatever. Just something that catches your eye as initially a little out of character for Giant Bomb.

I'm not sure I like decks for trailers telling me buying advice. Offering up impressions of games is fine and I usually use the podcast or quicklooks to know if I'm going to buy a game. However when it's paired with a trailer that just feels like it's a direct advertisement.

Agreed.

@patrickklepek

What do you mean "don't even hesitate to buy" it? It doesn't seem appropriate for you to give purchasing advice in this context.

Moreover, it seems here like you are giving purchasing advice based largely on a trailer. It's not clear here whether you have reviewed the game or even played it.

In Monday's Bombin' the AM, you said you played a couple hours of it and really liked it. That's great. But that context is not available here. Moreover, it seems like you would want to play it a bit more than 2-3 hours before telling people to buy it.

The game looks good to me, but you telling people to buy it in the deck of its trailer when it's not clear how much you've played it **looks** fishy.

I don't intend to question your integrity, but I think you have to admit that the deck might look odd from the perspective of a lot of readers.

this is....dumb. people get so riled up about "integrity" now it's just ridiculous. he's a human being and this is a personality driven website. he's editorialising, would you jump off a cliff if he told you?

It's a personality driven site, that's true. I just think the context of a trailer changes things and the deck of the video doesn't leave a lot of room to read into the editorializing. Since every other piece of content on the site has a literal editorial voice and is for the most part actual unedited gameplay footage, that's where I've gone to for most of my coverage. The trailers stand out because they're put together by the publishers/developers specifically to sell the game. When I see a deck like this one, it's confusing because it's like it's signing off on the trailer's messaging, rather than the merits of the game. The difference between the two might be very small but I think it's an important distinction. I prefer when the decks comment more on the content of the trailer than the game ("Tomodachi Life Is Freaking Me Out / I don't know what the hell I just watched." for example.)

Love the look to this game - and kudos to Yacht Club Games for the use of plain old black backgrounds.

NES could not handle this game's graphics... Sega Master System could handle that shit no problem though :-P

Didn't the devs build this game from the start to only use the 8-bit colour palette to make the game feel like a true retro platformer? I can't really understand people dismissing it as "just another indie retro platformer" They kept true to the art style but were able to do so much more with the mechanics side of it.

I think a lot of people are tired of "indie" being synonymous with "retro platformers." The retro aesthetic is fun sometimes but can often feel like a crutch that games lean on. It's a very specific aesthetic and it can get tiresome the same way anything can get tiresome if you're exposed to it too much, so when a game comes out (not necessarily this one) and touts "oh man pixel-perfect recreation of retro graphics" like that's some new crazy thing to applaud, a lot of people just roll their eyes immediately because 100 games doing the same thing just came out the week before.

It's exactly the same thing as criticizing people for being tired of first-person shooters or third-person cover shooters or whatever. It sucks when good games get caught in the crossfire, but hey, maybe they should try something new. Even Nintendo abandoned the pixel aesthetic for some more innovative, like yarn.

But like, those are misconceptions anyway so those kind of people who generalise indie games as all being retro 2D platformers or have the same art style (great indie games with unique art styles) or that FPS/TPS all suck (Wolfenstein The New Order is one of the best games of the year) with their selective bias should probably be ignored and not worth responding to anyway.

What about those of us who don't 'generalise indie games as all being retro 2D platformers' but are just plain sick of the high number of these games that continue to be produced that do little new with the formula?

Having said that, I may have been harsh on this game as unfortunately neither the trailer not Patrick's summary (or even the GB wiki) do anything to sell it being deserving of attention beyond the usual retro aesthetic and 'It's the real deal'. Maybe that's a problem there, much as I love the guys at Giantbomb, maybe if they're going to praise a game in one of these trailer dumps, they should really say why it deserves that praise or not bother at all?

Anyway, listening to Bombing the AM with Alexa Ray Corriea while doing a bit of work, where they're apparently going to speak about it in a bit more detail so hopefully will learn more there.

One thing that I have learnt reading a bit more about it is that it's a Wii U release so hey, having a shiny new Wii U I might just damn well pick it up and see if it exceeds my kinda low expectations? I'm not adverse to being proven wrong here :)

I mean, if you're plain sick of the genre, then you can just ignore the releases. I'm not going to sing praises for Shovel Knight as I haven't played it and honestly like you don't see much unique about it that screams I need to buy it, could just be a really solid game, but if you want to hear the staff's opinion about the game, that's what the quick look and bombcast will be for rather than expecting reasoning in a trailer blurb.

There are plenty of interesting 2D platformers though, like

Loading Video...

and then ones that include combat like Volgarr the Viking or Guacamelee are brilliant, so I never get tired and if one doesn't grab me, I'll just ignore it.

Feel a bit sorry for this game as it is making it's debut right in the middle of the Steam sale, I hope it doesn't get too overshadowed by everything else. Also, the style seems less of a crutch and more of a purposeful decision. The way the game moves and animates is definitely more in line with modern games.

I dunno why folk get their knickers wedged so uncomfortably about art styles. Is game good? Do you like good game? Who cares what it looks like.

Also there is a reason pixel style is common for 2D indie titles. It is cheap. It is straightforward to animate. It is easy to keep file sizes small. This is not necessarily some grand conspiracy to make generic looking games. Expedience is major factor. Small budget tends to force efficiency upon design.

Personally I'm seeing more Zelda II in this game than Castlevania. Particularly that jumping downwards attack.

However this game undoubtedly pulls from all the old 8-bit sidescrollers.

The anchor on the fishing line really sold me.

I'm kind of surprised at the fatigue with retro-styled games in these comments. Assuming that each game stands on it's own, this looks like a bunch of dumb fun. Cool levels, silly ideas, diverse bosses. What else do you want? It ain't 2015 yet.

Oh, and;

"Dark Shovels", why am I the first to say this? I'm disappointed in the lot of you.

I've somehow avoided seeing anything about this until now, but it looks pretty great.

Looks very weird to see so much negativity around a game that's been looking like pretty much the best thing ever for a year or so. Yeah, it has a retro look and it's a platformer, but even if you're not particularly into that (I'm not out seeking retro games at all) the game looks fantastic. I for one am very excited.

I'm still not set on the Wii U vs. 3DS thing, though. Guess I'll do the Wii U version, and depending on how I like that, I'll either grab it again or not.
