What about games that require the Vita's touch screen and back touch like Tearaway? Considering this thing only comes with a PS3 controller, I can imagine there won't be support for all existing Vita games.

Sounds like that they will be putting in DS4 functionality eventually, and that you can sync up a Vita to it so you can play the games that require the touch pad.

Well, it doesn't play all Vita games. Engaget reported this morning that Sony published a list of compatible titles and they spotted that Gravity Rush, Wipeout and Uncharted are absent from it. My guess is this won't play games that look like the PS3 qulaity games, i.e. high-end graphic ones in some cases. So, it is more like an indie game, PSOne, and media streaming box than a Vita alternative.

Still a good value as long as you don't mind also buying those proprietary memory doo-dadds to increase the capacity. For me I'd rather just buy a Vita Slim, but that has more to do with using Vita as a controller on PS4.

It seems like this device has some cool potential but it still doesn't answer the question of what about games that support the Vita's front and rear touch. Being able to play your PS4 games from a separate room to the console could be awesome however.

That seems really smart if I can remote play with it. I wonder if you can bring it to a friends house who doesent have a ps4 and remote play on it.

Does this play Vita games on its own? 99$ seems kinda cheap when a cheapest Vita is double that.

It doesn't need a screen and no back touch, so thats probably the difference right there

I think it's more about games that require Vita specific things like touch panels.

@nashvilleskyline: It's a device that only plays PSV and PSP games, and can be used as a remote hub to access saved content. It can also be used in tandem with the PS4, or by itself.

Smart move to get the the Vita more support and give people a cheap gaming system. Also gives kids and excuse to have their parents get a PS4 in the future.

Can you use your actual vita as a controller for a game that's in the PS Vita TV and is being streamed, so you actually have that touch screen?

If so: great product!

If not: Half-assed implementation and immediately less worth buying for vita stuff..?

Dual-shock 4 controller has a touchpad on it. This thing is coming out before the PS4 launches in Japan, so it is available with a DS3, as well as that bundle includes a memory card.

Yes, the controller, didn't really think of that.. but.. I believe the ps4 controller touchpad is singletouch or there was some other kind of limitation? Something kinda weird for modern tech that made me go "huh..", don't really remember.
And has the size of not even half a kit-kat bar (yes, thats a real international unit of measurement!), it looks like.

In no way shitting on the product, it looks really cool and, and this is just a feeling, (I own a Vita, a 360, and prefer my PC *disclaimer*) I would haven been infinitely more surprised if Microsoft had announced this. With Sony I just thought "Yeah. That seems really fucking cool. But $stuff?". :)

So even if no "Vita-as-a-controller": That's some great innovation (or rather "evolution") in the field of consoles.

This is up until now is one of the coolest new "features" of the new console generation, come to think of it. That and the tech and some UI implementations in/with the new Kinect - which will sadly never cross my doorstep, so yeah.. ;)

@brad Your white PSVita is worthless now!

I just bought a vita 3 weeks ago, thinking "Nah, half a year + until there is a new iteration, might as well buy now."
I also completely bought Nintendo's "No WiiU pricedrop! Go Away!" about 3.5 weeks before they took 50$ off - I am getting really bad at this game. Not that I bought a WiiU mind you

Giant Bomb seems to be the only media outlet that recognizes this is an incredible alternative to Roku and Apple TV.

This is what I was thinking. Was going to get a Roku 3 but now I think I'm going to wait. If you can play co-op ps4 games through this thing (instead of split screen...2 tv's) it's a no brainer in my house. Maybe when its released in the US they'll bundle it with a Dual Shock 4.

Very clever way to increase the install base. Good for branding and if it's cheap I bet heaps of gamers will be into it.

Playing vita games on the tv, something you can't do with a 1st gen vita.

You can play PS4 games on a TV where your PS4 isn't plugged into it. That right there is enough.

Wow. I definitely want one of these, at least to access some of those PS Plus games I've gotten for Vita, as well as P4 Golden.

Also, the white DualShock 3 is sexy. If I didn't already have two (black/blue) I'd get one. I already don't do any multiplayer on PS3 so...yeah.

It's a kinda weird machine, I think. Doesn't this run the risk that we'll be getting games that aren't particularly suited for the handheld Vita in the future, considering this doesn't seem to have any touch screens?

So this plays Vita games, PSP games? It will allow me to play my PS4 that is in another room?

One thing I am not clear on... will I be able to plug a hard drive in the back USB port and store my er.. "Ripped Blu-ray" MKV collection on it to play through the device? If so I'm 100% sold.

I'm kind of conflicted on this. It seems like a cool idea, but I don't know if I would be ready to throw another $100 down on top of what I already paid for my vita. What quality will the upscaled video be? And what about the ps4 streaming quality and range?

Also why would Sony release this in November in Japan when they aren't even launching the ps4 until February?

So many questions Sony. I'm definitely intrigued but don't think I'm ready to drink that sweet, sweet kool-aid just yet.

I'm more stoked for this than the PS4. I already have a good gaming PC, but this looks like the perfect system to play all the awesome indie games Sony has been snatching up.

My only half worry is vita port games like Need for Speed Most Wanted sometimes have very low resolutions. I think that game is like somethingx260p which will look like ass on a TV. Though it would be very silly to buy that version for TV play.

I could see myself getting Borderlands 2 vita and playing it on this if the resolution is close to the Vita's native.

This thing is super exciting to me and I may even import one if they don't announce a US date. Since the Vita itself is region free it would be cake to get it working in English anyhoo.

Its $150ish with a controller and an 8GB memory stick so its not too far off from a PS3 or a Vita proper, but I'm all aboard this anyhoo.

Also Sony is making some seriously sexy hardware lately. The Vita, the PS4, the Vita 2000, and now this all look awesome. The super slim PS3 looks a bit cheap on the top, but doesn't look bad either.

Why does every depiction of people playing video games on TV make it look like a bunch of actors play acting playing video games? Which goofy moron holds a controller like that with a dumb grin on their face? I know Sony doesn't want to show a bunch of stone faced kids blankly staring into a screen, but there has to be better middle ground dopey teen with a smile 1, token black friend, and token white friend.

Almost 100% it would be a Vita TV per set. No sense in doing it through a TV's wifi since they can't control that unless they make a Vita branded TV (which could get real confusing real fast).

Alternatively you could move around the Vita TV and plug it into a different television. You could just do that with a PS4 too and save $100 if you only want that feature. It would be easier and less scary to move around a tiny deck of cards console with no moving parts, though.

Do we know if the Vita TV uses an infrastructure wifi (through router) or is it just ad-hoc (directly ps4 to vita tv). Ad hoc would mean they could better control the speeds of the transfer. I wonder how much of the PS4 remote play on the Vita TV is just a happy accident from the regular Vita remote play. That or Sony thought of everything.

edit: Just checked that compatible list. I didn't know Steins;Gate was on the vita. That's pretty awesome. Wish they would localize that "game".

editer: In a perfect world Sony would let people use the single USB to plug in a flash drive and use that as storage, but that's not likely to happen. I'm sure its only used for charging the controller and plugging a keyboard (for chat stuff) in and stuff like that.
