It looks like a freakin mini game! Space combat is a HUGE part of the Star Wars narrative, and their giving it about as much importance as the arcade machine in Raynors ship! Still, I'll totally buy this game. Weak sauce though Bioware, weak sauce.

I reckon it looks alright.
Its not the part of the game I'm most interested in - but it looks decent enough to add a bit of variety when playing.

I guess for my ideal Star Wars MMO, I'd basically want Shadowbane-style battles (i.e. players fight and take control of other players' cities, or, in this case, planets) combined with Battlefront-style combat, somehow balanced to include the ridiculous number of Jedi and Sith that'd be running around, and simultaneous ground and space battles that you could move between (as in defending forces might start on the ground, hop in a ship, and fly out into orbit to do space combat, or stay on the ground and wait to duke it out on the battlefield).

Seems to me that that's not the game we're talking about, so while I still may be interested in playing (it is Star Wars, after all), I'm not sure exactly how good this game's gonna be.

Space combat also seems like a skip for me, especially since I've played Rogue Squadron I, II, and III, and Jedi Starfighter II, and Battlefron II, all of which had excellent space combat.

Seems like a wasted opportunity to include a "x-wing / tie fighter" view. I guess people wanna play dress up with their ships tho.

@skaune: That's exactly what I was thinking. But that could have been something other than free roaming space combat or PvP. Maybe that's an on rails sort of thing that takes place when traveling between planets in a star system.

@mustachioeugene: Glad I'm not the only one who thought that guy looked ridiculous. Plus his armor looks like a bad Frank Gehry experiment.

Combat looks meh, no way it'll be as good as Star Fox 64 so I'm still not that interested. Seems like an odd choice to have put this in the MMO, though.

And no, people, you don't want the "split-up" method like in Ep. IV. BioWare tried turrets in KOTOR and they sucked.

I didn't say anything bad about the LEGO Star Wars games, not as far as i know. I said the animated series "clone wars" was bad, and the games based on them.   Its fine that you enjoy the newer Star Wars stuff, i just don't. I'm one of those idiots who thinks of Star Wars as a Trilogy still, and disregards everything after the movies 4,5,6. The same way as i see Indiana Jones.   But i really don't see that space combat fitting in the main game, looks way too arcady, but if more people share your opinion Bioware succeeded by adding it to TOR, and i'm in the minority. But i can live with that. "
The animated Clone Wars series is by far the best thing to come from Star Wars since Return of the Jedi.. Including any books and videogames.  It started out badly with a very rushed together "movie" but the series has been getting progressively better and better.  The last few episodes of the first season were amazing, and the entire of the second season was pretty brilliant.

If you're a real SW purist, you'll hate it as much as anything else, but it really annoys me to see so many "Star Wars fans" shrugging it off so quickly without even giving it a chance.

But your point about Bioware and their CG trailers?  I actually agree with 100%.  They made some pretty cool looking action scenes, but they in no way represent the actual game and completely missed the SW feel.  isn't this was all the prequel bashers were complaining about to begin with?  Less fancy fights, more real story.  The special effects and moves they use are very contemporary, but come off as very artificial and will seem very outdated in a few years time, which is something I don't think even the prequel movies will suffer from.

@2HeadedNinja: It was more along the lines of a complaint. I love Bioware, but I'm tired of seeing so many pre-rendered trailers from them. They build their games up and I always get let down. If they spent less money getting blur to do the pre-render trailers and instead paid them to do the dialog in their games I would be happy as hell.  I'm a huge fan of motion graphics and animation and I'm working on getting into the industry. It just bugs me when I see something misrepresent the main focus of the game.

I don't know what it is with Bioware's animation team, but their body motion always feels really stiff, especially during dialog cutscenes. The Mass Effect 2 Pre-rendered dialog trailers were amazing, but in game the lips don't even match up to have the words half the time and the characters all move like robots. If you don't have an eye for animation or character motion, you probably don't notice it as much, but when you're training in the field, it's an eyesore.

It's not unfair for me to critique a video game company on a video game website. That's why they exist...

I wasn't really speaking towards the in flight combat in this trailer, though I must admit, I don't mind rails in space so long as the controls are more than just movement and shooting. I need acceleration and deceleration as well and I hope they bring this to the table. This kind of rail shooter tends to suck when it lacks those game mechanics.

You should not call yourself an idiot, but you are missing out on a very great deal of stuff that makes Star Wars such a great thing to be a fan of. Honestly, if you only see movies 4,5, and 6, and nothing else, Star Wars would be really boring.

And besides, Star Wars is arcade space combat. It's not those Jedi games or Old Republic games. It started out as space ships, the Jedi things are expansions of the series. Anyway, check out the Clone Wars TV series, the new season starts this September. I'm sure you'll have fun.

They say that because it will play like star fox, not other Star Wars games like Rogue Squadron, its going to be a semi-on rail shooter like Star Fox.  Its been confirmed by Bioware already.

And I still haven't seen anything from this game that shows it to be an MMO, just seems like a goofy looking KOTOR game.  Not a bad thing but if they are saying its an MMO, then lets see it.

They should have just copied the space combat from the Rogue Squadron games, i don't see why that wouldn't have worked.  Either way I'm glad space combat is in the game :)

Yeah, it's on rails but I'm okay with it since it's a launch feature.  I don't think Bioware needs to burden the player with every minute potential game play component right from the start.  They should make sure what they have in the game works well first then add on more abilities to the game including more varied space combat.

I'm a bit skeptical of how this fits into the structure of an mmo, but I'm going the wait and see route before passing judgement. It could turn out awesome if implemented well.

I don't think the space combat looks particularly bad..  Very Star-foxy, which is a good thing.  But as others have said, it doesn't really seem to fit in very well here.  The game feels very mish-mashed to me, the multiplayer, flying and story elements feel very seperate and isolated.  Hopefully the final game flows better than what we've seen.

But I'm also feeling less and less impressed the more we see of it.
Especially now that we're getting more Guild Wars 2 footage, which has pretty much upstaged this in every way.

" At least it's not another pre-rendered bioware trailer. Kind of getting sick of them not revealing gameplay or ingame graphics. It's one thing to build up your game with hype, but when you compare the E3 pre-render trailer to this gamescom trailer, you're kind of left with uncertainty towards the game's polish.  Their budget for Blur Studio creating them these beautiful pre-rendered trailers has to come close to the budget for the rest of the game. "
Thats kinda unfair ... for the point of development they are in they are releasing a normal ammount of gameplay footage ... from what I know there were the 2 huge cinematic trailers, and those got the job done: generating attention for the game.

As for the space combat ... yeah, on rails. But you cant really expect them to deliver a "free" space in the vanilla version of an MMO. If that is a hint on whats to come for quests in the game thats rather promising. I'd rather play a space mission quest than a "deliver 5 rancor teeth" quest.
