Space Combat In Star Wars: The Old Republic

The October edition of PC Gamer magazine will contain some interesting new information about space combat.

Here is a list of details:

• The missions should last no longer than a few minutes, and are therefore more of a short action-snack "in between.
• At release, there will be no PvP ship combat.
  • In the future BioWare does plan to introduce co-op/pvp ship combat.
• The mission, which was allowed to test PC Action, included hunters, Corvettes and cruisers. Their task was to shoot down 20 enemy fighters and destroy the capital ship.
• The missions are nicely staged, are not just boring laying around in nothing there
• Space combat is currently only single player, the goals will be flown on the bridge of his own spaceship
• There are also escort missions planned
• All space missions are currently optional, no one has to do it if he does not want
• There will be six different types of spacecraft. Smugglers, Bounty Hunters, Imperial Agents and Troopers have a personal ships. The Jedi and Sith classes share the same model.

I don't understand why you'd want single-player/co-op rails shooter in an MMO. They didn't necessarily need to recreate EVE but at least the feeling of Space rather than canyon runs would have been nice but we'll see how they execute it. I guess it's just not what thought I when they announced 'Space Combat' at Comic-Con. 

So it's like Starfox if Starfox didn't have any waves of enemies, fun set pieces, and corny dialog? Alright,  I guess that's cool. Better than all range mode, that mode always sucks.

Star Trek Online had some great space combat. We all know how that turned out.

So I heard Claudia Black, Jennifer Hale, and I think Liam O'Brien and Cree Summer.
 
Those are some hella names for your player characters.  Add Yuri Lowenthal, Nolan North and make Fred Tatasciore the main antagonist and you have yourself a video game.

The more I see, the less I know what to make of this game.

Yeah, no dealbraker for me. A do not need space combat in my Star Wars MMORPG experience. That being said I do think that TIE-Fighter was one of the best games ever made. Space battles should be much more epic on the player side, meaning: I want a star destroyer.

 Anyone notice that they used music from Star trek TOS in the beginning? :D

I'm going to be honest, the space combat looks really horrible. If it didn't say "The Old Republic" in the title i would swear i was watching another one of those newly released horrendous Star Wars games based on the newer animated equally as horrendous shows. 
 
Rest of the game still looks solid as a mean turd.

Thats pretty tight they put something like this in an MMO. 

I think it's the perfect fit for what SW:TOR sets out to do. The game is about my character and his/her story and my choices. The space battles are rollercoaster rides. Just like they were in the movies. While there might be a place for actual space-sim-style PvP battles in the future, this is a great place to start off.
 
Let's be honest here. The main appeal of SW:TOR is that we can play it just like KOTOR (a KOTOR that never really ends). Like a storydriven singleplayer game Bioware-style set in the expanded Star Wars Universe garnished with MMORPG trappings, such as dungeon instances and group quests and PvP battlegrounds and social hubs, if we chose to play so.
 
Personally, I intend to play SW:TOR more like KOTOR and less like WoW. I'm just gonna play alts until the SW:TOR experience grows tired. I'm in it for the actual gameplay. Progressing a character's story from level 1 to the end of suitable solo content. And then play another class and faction. KOTOR ad infinitum. I don't want to get into the endgame really. I did the endgame raiding/grinding/farming in WoW ad infinitum already.
 
At least that's what I hope for. From all I've seen and read, from official sites and leaker sites and such. I will be very happy playing SW:TOR like KOTOR. In relation to KOTOR, Rebel Assault style on-rails space combat makes perfect sense. PERFECT SENSE!

I don't know. How many unique rail shooter sequences do you think they can make? Still excited for the rest of the game though.

I'm really excited for this game but I still don't get why its an MMO.

People are quick to dismiss this as not being very engaging just because it is a "rail" shooter for space combat. I'm in no way saying it can't be disappointing, however lets not forget the greatness that was Panzer Dragoon Orta, which was, also, a rail shooter. Just something to think about.

Honestly, your opinion is pretty offensive in that you imply the LEGO Star Wars games and the Clone Wars TV show are anything even close to 'bad'. It's hard to find someone who has actually played the games and watched the show to have your opinion. And the space combat here seems fine, although choppy, and maybe not as good or deep as Star Fox. "

Looks good, might be a break-up from grinding. If they don't include all the Star Wars related quotes that Peppy Hare says then i'm not buying it.

Of all the things I expected space combat to be in this game, Star Fox was not one of them.
 
This is shit hot.

Bioware should release more gameplay footage of the Old Republic rather than the misleading CGI trailers. It's not my type of game, but that was pretty good. This MMO is beginning to look better than I expected. Looking forward to seeing more.

They should port Rogue Squadron 2, don't change a thing. I don't care if it doesn't make sense, or if it looks dated by today's standards, it's what should happen. Just make you play levels from that when it's time to fly a space ship.

I really, really hope this game turns out to be awesome because the more I see for it, the more excited I get!

Kind of a let down. Was hoping for more X-Wing and less Star Fox.
