Spookin' With Scoops 04/18/2013

The return of late night horror games results in a bunch of swearing at a computer monitor, thanks to Slender: The Arrival, DreadOut, and Among the Sleep.

As someone who's played Slender: no, that's not the point. The point is to laugh with your friends/significant other after the fact, going "Remember when he showed up RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME and I screamed at the top of my lungs?!...awesome!!!"

And on a more basic level: fear gives you a shot of adrenaline and endorphins.

Among the Sleep free playable alpha is OUT!

@eujin said:

Beyond the Sleep seems like it could be really cool, especially since, as a child, you'll have no way to fight back against anything.

Also, possessed teddy bears are not to be trusted.

Among the Sleep seems kind of cool. Thanks for showing that off.

This was a great "episode" of this feature, quality is so much better than previous iterations (unless I missed some) and I was pretty much hooked through the entire thing.

@rolanthas said:

Wow Dreadout seems surprisingly awesome. Fatal Frame for PC? Take my money.

Although that goes for Among The Sleep as well. I'm just starving for some good horror.

They do seem pretty awesome! I downloaded Dreadout from their official site. Had less luck finding a build of Among the Sleep even if it's being developed in my own country. :c

Great episode of Spookin! DreadOut looks messed up. I'm not sure I could play that game alone.

Thanks for bringing this feature to the site Patrick. Looking forward to the next one.

I really wish these features would focus on a single game per episode. Obviously for some of the slimmer-on-content indie games I understand burning through them, but, I'd really enjoy watching Patrick dig into a single game rather than cycle through three or four. It makes it hard to get really invested, for me. My favorite episode of this feature was the Friday the 13th one that Patrick did with Ryan. Just so much easier to get absorbed in.

I suppose it's not a completely fair request, but basically I'd love this feature 5000x times more if it resembled the Fear Gauntlet style of doing games (dedicating episode after episode to a single game until you've either beaten it or no longer feel scared) rather than just sampling different games. Watching Patrick play through one of the older Resident Evil games, or doing a run through one of the character stories of the Ps1 Clock Tower, or play a couple hours of Call of Cthulhu, or something like that, would be completely awesome, but I just have such a hard time connecting to these features when it's 20 minutes per game.

I'd rather just hear the voice-over without the view of Patrick in the corner.

I have never liked being able to see people while they stream a game, except for when it's a big social gathering, like a TNT or Unprofessional Friday.

Is he in the garage? What the hell? lol.

Also, Windows 7 is super simple for audio. In fact, it shouldn't be Windows 7 he goes through, but the streaming software that lets him pick audio input from all of the ones that are plugged in at the time.

Man, imagine if Patrick had an infrared camera. That'd be hilarious!

@patrickklepek If you want to play STALKER, the key is to just wander around at night, and explore structures. That's the best way to get the "scary" stuff. It's pitch black, and there are a lot of freaky things just around the world, even beyond the mutant dog things. Lots of ambient sounds keeping you on edge and the occasional even that forces you into an unknown structure potentially filled with freaky/dangerous shit.

It's a very very tense game, but it doesn't really have much of a learning curve other than the kind of weird structure. But someone more knowledgeable about the game than me could probably sum up the key points very quickly. Get established a bit, but don't put too much into the game before you approach it for the series.

The problem with these games is that wandering around in the dark waiting for jumpscares isnt scary, ist just startling.

I thought Hostel totally "earned it." There's something to be said for making a thing that's grotesque to look at because it's fantastical and disgusting and you'd never have imagined it yourself, and there's something to be said for making something grotesque to look at because it's not fantastical. Hostel falls in the second category.

Like, when they cut the guy's Achille's tendons and had him stand up and try to walk and fall forward, it was nasty and it could happen to you at any given second. It's gross to even describe, and they had excellent sound design. I feel like they broke stalks of celery or something. They fucking earned that.

Yeah, that's a song I was sung a lot as kid. I was just about to ask if it's something that non-Swedish people know of. Maybe it's also common in other languages?

I guess it's also sung in at least Norway. The developers of the game are Norwegian. Swedish speaking parts of Finland is probably a safe bet and perhaps Denmark. Don't know if it is translated to any language that isn't Scandinavian.

I couldn't find my favorite version of the song (performed by Lyd, a Norwegian band) so I slapped it on top of the Troll Hunter trailer and did some shitty editing - and this was the result.

I agree. I don't really need or want him to narrate everything. I know that's the natural urge when you're on camera, but honestly, I'd rather just feel like some fly-on-the-wall voyeur while he just plays. No need to talk at all.

I don't see the issue of not being able to see Patrick's face; I know what he looks like. I only need to hear him, and then he can pull up the window of him in-between games.

It needs to be completely dark for effect.

A couple critiques

  • Since horror game are always dark, your face isn't lit up which effectively leads to a black box in the corner.
  • Your reactions seem forced. Regardless of weather they are or not, less talking would increase the tension.

I didn't consider I'd have to boost the brightness higher due to the stream. My bad. Will tweak for next time!
