I read the comments before starting the video. I'm about to click play and can't wait to hear what terrifying sound adventure is ahead of me.

Damn my hearing sucks. I'm 22 and 15hz was my limit.

Posted by Meltbrain

Dude, my speakers have been making strange noises through the tweeters when my computer goes in to standby lately and that is the exact tone they make that Drew was playing. Really disconcerting! And yes, I can hear it.

Edited by RetroVirus

I can still hear it! Hooray, my ears are still decent!

man best friday yet

Posted by ShaggE

16hz is my limit (at 26). I abuse my ears with noise pretty regularly, too, so I'm shocked that my hearing is that good.

As for Time Commando: Wow... that does NOT do my memories service. Usually my nostalgia holds up really well, but not this time.

Oh man, what was that music that Drew played in the beginning? Its driving me crazy that i cant remember where its from.

Turns out, we already knew.

It was one of my favorite games back in the day, such a nostalgia trip.

The crazy thing is, on the stream I couldn't hear anything past 16kHz. But when I looked up the website later myself I could hear up to 18kHz. Could it be the stream audio compression?

Edited by Humanity

No idea what Patricks issue with the steam stuff is. Sounds like the inane people that rant about achievements being the devil. I love little meta games like that its just a fun side thing.

Yes, absolutely. Most audio codecs have a tendency to filter out frequencies that people can't hear.

At first I thought this was not working due to the high pitch noise

What was the link for that colorblind test?

This was so much better than last week.

As long as they dont replace actual ingame rewards like secret levels or unlockables of some kind. I went through fallout new vegas in the hardcore mode and it tells you you will get a reward at the end of it all, and that turned out to be just an achievement. ( but that's was an awesome way to play that game so maybe its not the best example. ) Its just too easy to be lazy about it as a developer and use achievements instead of actual content as a reward, i think.

I'm impressed by Drew's knowledge of our national day here in Norway!

Good show.

Edited by Humanity

@peritus: Plenty of times achievements have motivated me to play a game longer and in different ways. Sometimes I'd stick to only one weapon or playstyle all game long, and achievements for getting X number of kills with this and that weapon motivate me to try them out. Of course it's an empty reward but thats fine. I like having little badges on my profile stating I did something cool like beat a game on hard or completed a set of hard objectives.

The trading card thing will just push people to play games they already like even more or if they got bored with them it will be something interesting to get them back in.

Jeff in the title screen cap.

Well... we're never going to see that again. Nope, never ever. Not in a million years.

My cat wants to inform you that it is able to hear even a frequency of 64 kHz:

It is not entirely unusual to confuse Norwegian and Danish as our languages are similar, basically because Norway has been either a part of Denmark or in Union from the absolution of the Kalmar Union Until the end of Napoleonic wars. Though Norway has actively tried to differentiate their language by introducing "Nynorsk" ( New-Norwegian) which in a way is actually "old" Norwegian trying to emulate Norwegian as it was before it became more or less a part of Denmark. It tries to get rid of any Danish or German words, but apparently not Latin even though Danish and even German are much closer to Norwegian than Latin. By far the most written language is "Bokmål" which is pretty close to Danish though it has some blatant exceptions like "nei" means "yes" in Norwegian, where in danish "nej" means "no". On the other hand the Norwegian (Bokmål) word for "No" is "ja", which naturally means "yes" in Danish.

Still Bokmål is written by 85%–90% of the population.

The "Brennivín" (Firewood-Vine) Patrick and Drew tried is not really an Icelandic spirit but rather common to Scandinavia in general. In Denmark alone we got more than 17 brands. It is distilled from potatoes or corn and flavored with various herbs.

Well, they work both ways though. Achievements are great, but allot of people like getting them. Sometimes they are just 'too much' of any particular thing that some people rather not play the game at all because they can see up front they'll have no fun playing the game.

Single weapon playthroughs are actually a good example of that. There are allot of weapons in the game to get creative with and there is an achievement to do it with just one of them and then more achievements for every weapon to do it with those.

I've heard about people skipping entire games because they don't want to be limited in their playthroughs, but they don't want to not get achievements either.

It may sound dumb, but I kind off tend to agree. I really like achievements, but they should be cool achievements. Not limiting annoying ones. There is a fine grey area of course. I'm playing Last Light right now and completing the game in Ranger mode is allot of fun even though it limits you in a sense. It's good use of limitation.

I'm opposed to achievements that lock you out of what makes the game great is what I'm saying I guess. Achievements need to enhance challenge but not at the cost of fun.

'Check this game out it's totally awesome because of this feature! Also, here's an achievement to finish the game without ever using that feature!' - is just no fun.

I can hear the noise. "THERE ARE 4 LIGHTS!!"

How did no one say Among the Sleep was on "CryEngine"?!

I hear it. Oh god, I can hear the color spectrum!

Edited by Roomrunner

I'm 30, and can hear that sound clear as a bell

also, i've read stories about certain shops in malls and on high end areas that play noises like that to keep kids from loitering around.

Edited by OleMarthin

Loved the shout out too us Norwegian watchers for our constitution day:) also, the text in the game is Norwegian not Danish:) the studio making among the sleep is located in Norway.

Can't hear it, but I have tinnitus so if it sounds like a mosquito, that's why

Posted by Jimbo7676

Today I found out that Patrick has the same hearing range as me and that Drew also grew up on classic rock.

Posted by melodiousj

Funny, I couldn't hear it on the stream, but I can hear it now.

Posted by ThePickle

16hz was my limit. I'm 18 and I listen to music pretty loudly sometimes. I'm an Aries and like long walks on the beach.

Interesting - I'm red/green colourblind but I can order these correctly even without moving them to compare a la Jeff's technique, just by looking at them as the ones on the left are more blue than the ones on the right. This test must be a little faulty as I can't pass the dot diagram tests at all... Also as a photographer my monitor is fully calibrated (and a wide gamut IPS screen) so that most certainly helps.

Could not hear all the sounds and my hearing is much worse in my left ear which I have started to guess lately... sadly :( (28)

Ahhhhhhhhhhhh, that hurt. I heard nothing at first. Then I put my right earbud in. It was freaking ear piercing.

Love you Rorie, but I think you should slow down a little bit with the user questions.

I faintly remember Time Commando...also recall not liking it even back then. Or well, still excellent for laughs at least! Other segments were great as well...but that "looping" stuff with them videos is getting really odd.

Yeah, I'm glad to have him back, but the constant questions kinda ruin the flow that Fridays have.

Posted by Xealot42

I can pass the colorblind test but I can barely hear the 15 KHz sound. Totally couldn't hear the sound at the beginning of the stream either. Hooray for getting older! (I'm 28)

I love the reference to R. Mutt by Marcel Duchamp. Ready-mades really fucked up the art world and raised some critical questions

Posted by Rasmoss

I can't hear a thing. My hearing's shot.

Can't stop laughing at vinny in the picture on the wall of REO Speedwagon.

I dunno, dudes, community interaction is pretty important. Plus, it gives Rorie something to do.
