Taito's Bringing Left 4 Dead to Arcades in Japan

Is it bad that I only want this game to come out in those arcades to see some well dressed gamers curse each other for messing up? It's bad isn't it...funny though!

Interesting. If one person in the team of four fucks up, it could cost everyone else their credits. It has the potential to provide more of an 'immediate' risk to the game and hopefully, a greater incentive to work together.

Or it could put people off playing entirely...

I wonder if they are replacing or augmenting the hours and hours of dialog between the characters for the Japanese market. Oh God I can't even imagine how weird and great they would be.

Really hoping that young girl character is Ellis since that voice doesn't match up with anyone else.

They are horror/zombie movie tropes/archtypes. Comic relief and token black guy/minority was Luis, pretty eye candy was Zoe, current/retired soldier that has skills/training that explains why they are not all dead was Bill, and the tough bad ass/rebel was Francis.

Typical black guy and old Vietnam vet? I'd hardly call those typical archetypes for games, when was the last time you controlled an old person in a game? Now, young girl in school uniform in Japanese media? That's a common trope.

Gosh the characterization on japanese voice work all seems terrible. Yeah I know thats a huge generalization. But mang, what they find dramatic (this is meant to be dramatic right?) just seems really over acted to my ear.

" Run and Shot" is good and all, but "Zombie and Zombie and Zombies" is the true gem of this video.

I played a pick up group in Left 4 Dead with 3 Japanese dudes once. I couldn't understand everything they said and the same for them with me but we had a good time nonetheless. Hope the people over there enjoy this game as much as I did.

Wow, the game play in Left 4 Dead fits pretty well into an arcade mold when you think about it. Mindless game play, small campaigns, and easy deaths. You only have to wait for the yen to flow.

Looks like this uses the same cabinet design as Border Break: Sega Network Robot Wars, which I have played a couple times in the arcades. It has a mouse, and an analogue stick instead of WASD with 2 buttons. The screen also had a touch interface built in. That cabinet seems designed to bring PC games to the arcade, and it is nice that you get proper analogue movement, albeit with fewer possible button assignments.

Man... Is it just me or does every Japanese character have the same voice? They always try to make them sound as young as humanly possible. I mean yeah the west has the whole "gravely voiced badass" issue too but I feel it's not anywhere near as widespread.

Could you not tell that just from the trailer voices? At least they're not making Zoe sound like a 10 year old. (although an alternate voice pack DLC might be kinda funny, who knows).

I heard that L4D was pretty popular in Japan. Kinda weird to make an arcade version after Valve literally gave away a copy of L4D2 during their Christmas sale. Maybe this is for those who don't have a way to play at home?
