Euphoria ftw, omfg. We already had a taste in GTA IV... But tihs is even so much better. Makes you wonder about GTA V as well. Looking forward to this!

Never played a Max Payne, but I played a whole lot of Stranglehold and I really like what I see here.

I don't know how old you are, or how tolerant you are of old-ass games, but if you're at all intrigued, go get Max Payne 1+2 NOW. Better yet, wait for the Steam sale and buy both with change you find under your carseat cushions. A decade later, MP1 definitely holds up, although the face-and-suit textures may be slightly off-putting. Point is, get it and experience noir nirvana.

hmm, this trailer left me with a bad taste in my mouth. It's like someone at Rockstar went "remember those trailers we did for RDR and LA Noire that was a huge success? well, we gotta figure out some gimmick we can push for Max Payne so we can do that again". I'm sure what they're doing probably has some better technology or something, but it's just too similar to what plenty of other games have done to warrant any major attention. Not saying the game doesn't looks good, but this just seemed more like Rockstar going "hey, we're actually making a game that has good shooting in it for once, aren't we special!"

I fail to see how one person talking over game play is a gimmick, especially since this is the third Rock Star game in a row to do it. Was it not a gimmick when LA Noir did it? Will it be a gimmick when GTA V inevitably does it?

Also, I would love to see all these games you are talking about that makes this feel so similar that a trailer isn't needed. Because I would love to play them.

You're sorta making my point. This is just a gameplay trailer with someone talking over it, but it uses the exact same style as their trailers for RDR and LA Noire which was made that way to show people how those game were so unique. But this time around they have have nothing unique to show, yet they still try to make videos that are specifically designed to explain a unique feature. Games like Uncharted and Gears already do similar things, maybe not with every as detailed animations for everything, but the difference is not in any way as stark as those other 2 games. Do you really want every game out there to make trailers that consists of detailed explanations of how their features are slightly different than what's normal ? Don't you think it's a bit pretentious of Rockstar to try to pretend like they're doing something new by combining first-person targetting with a third-person camera ? Or that it's not normal for third-person games to dynamically combine animations ?

I'm not saying the game looks bad or anything, hell it actually looks pretty great. But the trailer is nothing more than Rockstar very elaborately saying that they're making a good third-person shooter without their traditional crappy shooting mechanics.

This uses the same exact trailer as Red Dead and LA Noir because it's a Rock Star game. No, I wouldn't want every trailer to use this exact same style, just like I wouldn't like to see every trailer use some cheesy sad song in it like Gears did three times in a row, was that a gimmick too?I don't see how this trailer can't do the same, being a Rock Star game.

Gears of War does not do similar things here. I wouldn't even call it similar to Uncharted. Gears is a much slower paced game heavily relying on cover, which is where the fun is. Gears doesn't have you shooting the legs of a Locus to have them realistically react and enemy's are designed to be bullet sponges to a degree.

Uncharted is a cover shooter, but to a lesser extent. It changes the pace up with platforming and puzzle solving, making it a completely different game than Gears.

So yes, Max Payne is different because it is in the extreme details it has. Rock Star isn't being pretentious because neither Gears or Uncharted you mentioned combined first person targeting with a third person camera, because in both you press a trigger to zoom locking them in place, something Max Payne isn't doing here.

Love Max Payne 1 & 2. Though it's been a while and I kinda have forgotten.

btw. have you guys played Alan Wake? Is it worth the price of admission?

Edit: Checked at my retailers. Had it dirt cheap. So doing an Alan Wake playthrough this weekend.

@Landon: we're talking about different things on almost every level :P I'm not saying the trailer style is gimmicky, I'm saying the trailer-style is designed to show off a special feature, and if the game doesn't really have any new unique feature you have to rely on a gimmick feature for a trailer like this to work.

And I wasn't saying Gears and Uncharted are similar games to this (or each other for that matter), I was saying they use very similar features to what the video presents, making it's claim that it's doing something unique sorta weak. Hell if you don't think they are good examples I'm sure there are other third-person shooters out there that would fit better.

I get that they're doing something special with their animations, but unless that was actually pointed out very excessively (like in this video) most people would just go "ye, this game has some nice animations", much like say the train-sequence in Uncharted 2. It's just not worth notice compared to what they have shown ealier in these feature-centric trailers.

Looks great, animation is one the key features I would want in a Max Payne game and this is some of the best animation I've seen in a 3rd person shooter since max payne 2.

This video feels weird, like it was meant to be shown to investors or something.

Regardless, the game looks potentially stellar. As one of those militant Max Payne superfan weirdos, I am pleased!

I love the evolution of the Euphoria engine. Was pretty impressed back when it was used in The Force Unleashed, amazed when it hit GTAIV, jaw-dropped when used in animating horses in RDR, and now it's just fucking incredible. Wish it was used more often.

Also, this is Max Payne. Where's my Lords and Ladies?!?!?!?!

So Max Payne went Heisenberg, can't blame him.

The narrator seems to be the same person used in LA Noire presentation videos. He does tout this game's supposedly Noir themes, but the visuals sure as heck don't seem to be conventional for such genre.

This video is very strange. I thought Rockstar would be confident enough with their product since most of their games have been well done. It seems they want to PROVE that this game is good. I have no doubts it will be pretty bad ass, but seeing them spelling out things like this just seems weird.

It's weird that they've had these super informal, gameplay heavy trailers for Max Payne, L.A. Noire and Red Dead, but they still only release heavily stylized, cinematic trailers for the GTA series. I suppose the feel like GTA is a well established enough franchise that they can still get away with not showing you much until it's actually released.
