That Persona 5 Trailer

As someone who just got to play Persona 4 the Golden(well, I'm playing the Japanese version), I think it's fair to assume that all of the those were taken from the intro cinematic.

It's not just the site, a whole lot of the internet is pretty excited about this. I guess it's just being carried by the name alone. The Persona series is pretty much a known quantity at this point, and everyone knew that P5 existed in some way, so it was nice to finally have something. Whether or not this makes Atlus a bit lazy by just riding it's own hype wave, I don't know.

I'm hyped anyway.

Edit: Also, I want that logo by itself in some way. A shirt, a sticker, a poster, something.

I literally bought a PS4 because of this trailer. This put me over the edge. Can't wait.

All of that is round about speculation- and though I'm glad to have a bit more subtlety than the Persona Q trailers (Which are fan service heavy - which the game will be- which is fine.)- I'm hoping future trailers are a bit more informative than the first and second one's have been.

It actually has quite a bit of information. The first part is obvious: Smartphones. You see a shitload of them being either displayed or used. Even the protagonist has one! I would assume that you cast you personas using it and that "being trapped inside your phone" is probably going to be one the story themes. In addition to that:

A P5 Endurance Run is never going to happen, but I would actually shit my pants if it did.

They explained this a hundred times. The reason they don't do endurance runs any more is because people like them. Too many people have watched the persona 4 and deadly premonition endurance runs and Jeff saw that and told Drew that it was bad for the website and Drew emailed Brad and told him to put a memo to all staff saying they can no longer do endurance runs because that would be "selling out" and GB has to "keep it gully".

It just dawned on me that the main series skipped the whole last generation. Damn.

There are some cool subtle hints to speculate on for sure though.

Based on promotional stuff I'm speculating that the story is centered around the theme of social structure and the expectations placed on people based on birth or social status like a ball and chain. I'm basing this off a couple of things. First in the trailer the developers names are chained to their surnames which is a pretty obvious symbolism, this and the fact that the game will be set in Tokyo where class warfare is almost at San Fransisco levels makes me think that the protagonist will take on the role of a sort of delegate, bringing together people from all walks of life toward a common goal of equality and freedom. (also see classic Shin Megami Tensei Jesus allegories.)

P5 coming to the PS4 is great news, means I can sell my PS3 and all my games now, clean out some space and get some money back. Got a few more games I should finish but I can't stand using the DS3 anymore, the DS4 finally completely spoiled me for it.

Remote Endurance Run with Jeff and Vinny. With all that hardware at GBEAST, this has to be possible. Or Remote Play, live streaming, SOMETHING!!

I don't quite understand the excitement around this trailer, they show almost nothing except the look of the new main character. I mean, yay, new Persona now also on PS4, but this site especially explodes with hype for what is by and large a simple anime clip.

In the same vein, I don't understand why Jeff is excited for P5 when he doesn't give a shit about P3 because it doesn't have the P4 characters he fell in love with (figuratively speaking.) My point being, P3 is good, play it ffs.

The persona games are exact the opposite of what I want from a game. Generic looking anime type characters that looks bland and boring as hell set in what looks like cartoon hell. Next.

Just showing the protagonist himself is kinda of a big deal in itself since this is the character who you're going to be spending the next 60-80 hours with. In fact, the less they show of a game, the more pleasantly surprised I feel when playing it.

Reminds me of the intro to 3. I will buy this day one no questions asked.

So I guess red being the thematic color this time around makes a bit more sense if there's also going to be fire, though the fire in this particular trailer was more blue than red (but the initial 'lights from above' were red before the fire appeared).

There's also a pretty clear theme of imprisonment and breaking free going on in these trailers, so I wouldn't be surprised if they really play up the 'wild card' aspect of the protagonist this time around and give him the ability to more directly change fate (in this case red could also represent blood which in turn could more specifically represent a tragedy which needs to be prevented or altered).

Lastly, they really do seem to be focusing (in a subtle way) on phones in the trailer, so I'd be pretty surprised if they didn't play at least some sort of major role.

Can't wait to hear the soundtrack.

Not a lot happened. I'm looking forward to actually seeing the game, rather than the animated parts. I'm not a fan of reveals, announcements and trailers getting more and more minor. Telltale had a recent countdown on Twitter to... a vague announcement that they're making a Game of Thrones game, which I feel like everyone has known for ages, because they told everyone that already.

There is a distinct lack of mysterious foxes in this trailer. Not buying.

An Endurance run seems unlikely given how burnt out they are, but I would still like to see some sort of series for Persona 5. Even if it's a monthly check-in or something, some sort of series would be cool.

I am almost positive they won't. They hate being asked to do it since they get asked so often (which is a little weird, since you would think that they would want to consider things that makes their user base happy), and so Jeff would have to be in a great mood to ever even think of doing this. But also Vinny isn't even there anymore, and this has to be a Jeff/Vinny thing for it to even matter.

That's my impression from the trailer as well. Or that we are all shackled to our phones. That or Personas are like digimon now.

Also, kind of a big deal this is coming out on PS4. The Persona team always seem to stick with the more established system at the time of their development. It was always weird that P4 came out on ps2.

@fobwashed: Maybe it's not because you're old, but because these games are a total drag? I don't get it why people love them so much.

Every dungeon is the same thing, takes way too long and is intercut with a story that barely evolves. You can play for 50 hours and basically nothing happened.

I'm not saying they are bad games, but for me it felt like a total time sink every time I played it.

@fobwashed If you ever do get around to it, the portable versions of both Persona 3 and Persona 4 are -THE- way to play those games. Honestly, if I wasn't so crazy hyped for this, I'd probably just wait for the inevitable portable port for vita/whatever Sony's handheld is in 5 years. The vita version of P4 is especially good due to the vita's good suspend/sleep mode.

Even if it takes years, I'd say Persona 4 is a game worth playing. It does a lot of really interesting things in terms of mechanics when compared to most JRPGs.
