So torn between getting this or DoW II Retribution first.

I like how they reference the "The Art of War".  When I was playing Medieval 2, I used "The Prince" by
Niccolo Machiavelli as my strategy guide.  I guess I'll have to pick a new guide up for this game.

I think Ryan Davis should review this now that he's an accomplished Civ 5 veteran.

I'm waiting for Rome 2

I love these games, but you still need a friggin supercomputer to run them to that detail

More British woman pretending to be japanese I see.

Racist! I hate fake Japanese accents!

Looks like infantry move pretty fast. (for a TW game)

It's also good to see that the lady from the Kane and Lynch 2 trailers is still getting some work.

I have no clue why I am excited about this game (I never made it far past the Tutorial in the first one), but I am!

Shogun Total War started it all and had a phenomenal atmosphere. I loved cruising with the camera over the battlefield - creating my own Akira Kurosawa movie. Yet, the gameplay is something I do not understand to this day.

If I see a single unit, I want to control it. Dune, Command & Conquer, Total Annihilation, Starcraft trained, I cannot live with units doing their (AI) thing.

I'm spending £1600 on a laptop to play this game.

Isn't this a repost?I have seen the same video on GB like a month ago.

I am totally going to buy this game, but not in March.  March is too crowded.  Wait a minute, that can't be....

Game looks awesome!!!

Total war games always look nice but never play nice... always get bored in the first few hours.

I could have sworn that this video was posted before...

? engaging? how, you basically do one action every like minute the rest of the time your watching... I've literally beaten every mission in the Rome and Napoleon campaign while productively doing my homework. Civ takes the cake for turn based, and sc2 for real time.

Harro.  Me so sowwy.  Me "stweamline" mapo for dumb gaijin.

This ad is terrible.  Sun Tzu?  Don't the Japanese have their own strategists?  Also, I didn't notice any arquebuses.  :(

@KoolAid:

Well, technically Sun Tzu claims that a true leader wins and then seeks to go to battle, while the unsuccessful leader goes to battle and then seeks to win. Therefore, you have already won or lost the game and you don't have to buy it.

That's about how much I spent on my around 10 months ago - top of the line single GPU solution and, while I can max out most games fine, Empire: Total War brings my rig to its knees at 1920x1080. Here's hoping they've better optimised this one at least

Different strokes for different folks, It usually takes me a little bit to get into a total war game, but then I get fucking devoured by them.

@teh_pwnzorer: Sun Tzu had a great influence in the Sengoku period.

I love the Total War series, but what is with the new marketing fad of saying subjective stuff like, best game in the genre or GOTY (Reach did it). Who the hell falls for that sort of crap? It just makes devs look like asses. I liked the times when everyone didn't release trailers, when games were a mystery to uncover, now you know everything before the game's out.

Complaining about the use of Sun Tzu in Japanese warfare is like complaining that American philosophy students study Plato and Aristotle and not always somebody who is American. When you've got a dude who wrote a book that's older than the Bible by about 500 years I think you can use it without feeling embarrassed for not using a domestic solution instead.

The Japanese Art of War would probably be Miyamoto Musashi's The Book of Five Rings, which wasn't written until 1645. This game is based in the 1500's.

Good meurning.

What use is any of this if the pathing will still be shit?

Posted by Wuddel

I am hoping for some GiantBomb coverage on this.

Posted by PenguinDust

Looks good but I have the feeling it's going to be a beast to run.  I checked out the min and recommended specs on the Total War site and I can run it now but not at recommended, so I'd need to upgrade my CPU and add some RAM.  I'll probably wait a bit on this one since I've got a pretty full plate as is.

Posted by Krystal_Sackful

I don't understand why Ryan finds these games so baffling. Its pretty straightforward.

telling that the story of the American Revolution is Empire Total War.

Oh no, they said the word streamlined!

Don't they know that angry internet dwellers love to pretend to be intelligent, and thus freak out over anything that could possibly be interpreted as simplification, even if it it substantially  improves overall game flow?!

Have you never heard of a Japanese person in England?

Being published by Sega, and being half a click from London where I can personally see 20 Japanese people from my window. It's unlikely they got it faked.

@Emperor_Jimmu: Why? You could spend £800 on a desktop that would blow your laptop out of the water. Christ i built my last one for £500 and it'll probably be just as good. Though you can't turn mine upside down and make a fry up on it after an hour like you can with any good 'gaming' laptop.

Seriously if you're spending that kind of money and really need a laptop spend £6/700 on building a desktop and then £300 on a laptop if  you just want one for doing work on and stuff.

Yes, it's the root of all the other problems such as bad AI. Even up till Napoleon units couldn't negotiate walls, and ranged units would mob melee because of the moronic pathing.

This was acceptable back in Rome, and Medieval II to some extent, but it's still not fixed and the issues are really starting to show in larger, more nuanced battle scenarios. Somehow I doubt that they've significantly improved upon it in Shogun II.

Well I always get frustrated because it can mean anything from: "We made a big button that does everything important for you" (bad)
to: "We made clear what is important stuff and provided easy and manageable ways to do it"  (good)

I'd rather have them tell me what they actually changed instead.
