VII, VIII, IX are all the very best.

They're all amazing and have good music and for their time, graphics. So here's what I like about each:

FF8 has an intense intro movie... an antisocial protagonist... and Triple Triad.

FF9 has a great, satisfying ending.

FF7's backstory is deep, weird, and interesting, and so are the characters. They're almost all gangly misfits rather than cool stereotypes, apart from perhaps Vincent, and Cloud before you get to know him. So yeah, that's why it's my favorite. The writing is just so different from the many conventional JRPGs that followed it.

I actively despise Final Fantasy VIII and wish harm to those that are fooled into thinking it was ever a game worth money. What I mean to say is it's a bad game for bad people.

I personally find that FFIX is my favorite on PS1. FFVIII is my least favorite.

Respect for Patrick just increased greatly knowing this is his favorite PS1 FF.

Never played a Final Fantasy but Xenogears and Chrono Cross were some pretty good PS1 RPGs

Besides the awesome soundtrack of VIII, which I own. It has the best card game ever created, Triple Triad!!

I enjoyed Final Fantasy VIII quite a bit. It's probably one of my favourites along with VII, IX, X, XII, IV, V and VI. Oh, and Tactics.

Yup. FF 8 is the best of the old pS1 games. FF9 seems to be for nostalgia buffs and FF7 is an okay answer too but it just seems really archaic to me.

Similar to Nintendo games, which ever Final Fantasy you first play usually ends up being your favourite. Hence why the worldwide voted favourite seems to progress through the series as people get older & stop voting on such things.

FF8 is just fucking awful. One of my worst Final Fantasy experiences. Hated all the characters (Except Quistis) hated the plot. It literally put me to sleep at one point. I just nodded off playing it.

@metalman781: I played 8 when it was new. I knew well three other people who also played it when it was new. We all liked it, but I do remember that people in general were disappointed that 8 was not as revolutionary or engaging as 7 was.

Following 7, People had just gotten their hopes set too high for 8. It didn't deliver as much, and I wonder if overtime that pathos evolved to some of the current opinion (on the internet anyway) of a dislike of 8.

Final Fantasy 8 is the only one I have ever liked enough to play to completion. I played the PC version (with its million CDs) back in the day.
