I learned a new verb. Tessellate. I suppose it directly translates into "very pretty things".

Better hope next generation consoles comes with DX11 or 12 then, and better resolution rendering.

Some of those gfx looks great, but they still haven't figured out water. Watching the car drive through it, nothing about it looked natural, nothing like how real water would react.

The main problems are a lack of any splash, there is very little displacment, it settles far too quickly. It looks more like a heavy gloopy goo, not water.

I just rewatched it and you know what else didn't gel? the car didn't react to the water either, I would have expected a reduction in speed passing through water that deep. physics has a long way to go

I saw this on some other sites, and I can't say I'm impressed.  The new effects seem focused on things you'd hardly notice, and I know I've seen water splash and make waves better than that in games before.

If they want to make it rival games such as Forza 3 or GT5P/GT5, they're going to have to up car detail greatly, more polygons, better shaders.

Basically it's a port of an OK looking console game with some insignificant upgrades, which I wouldn't even be able to take advantage of with my high end DX10 card!

Yes dx10 cards are compatible with dx11 Mr Misinformed. You just won't get tesselation feature and directcompute.

donno about you but if i was in your position i would've had googled this before posting, given that its a 300-400$ worth question...

I never really felt any pain while playing my games... not sure how a computer game could cause injury, with the exception of the epileptic.

"Uneducated" is not a word that accurately describes my PC gaming experience.  I have done the PC gaming routine and it is no good.  I have had to deal with stupid compatibility issues, video card drivers, PCI, AGP, PCI express slots, RAM, and operating systems, just to name a few.  Playing a game and knowing that someone else is kicking your ass because they have some stupid expensive computer and since you don't have the hundreds of dollars just to get a new video card, or more RAM (assuming you have the slots for it).  No thank you, I like to know that who ever I am playing against has the same hardware as me so that skill is the real deciding factor in a competition.

Why would they want to rival games like Forza and GT in the first place? They probably would have done it on consoles already, not wait two months for the PC version to be greatly detailed.
Also,I don't think DiRT 2 cares about the extreme details in cars as in GT or Forza, the models look great for an off road based driving game.

PC gaming is a pain, because of headaches one will get from frustration. PC gaming is fine if you can afford it, but constantly trying to upgrade, just to keep up, really sucks. I know because I tried it, not being able to play a game because something isn't compatible, then trying to find a solution, only find out that you need to buy more shit gave me aspirin ulcers.

Either way, anyone notice how realistic Dirt 2 looks at night, without the shit-beige, sepia tint? I don't understand why Codemasters applied that subtle-sepia tone to their games. There are no whites, just beige; it's a shame for such a realistic looking game to look like it was rendered by some invalid, pre-teen photoshoper.

Well, as a DX11 game featuring the latest graphics techniques I would hope they wished to attain 'good graphics'.  If they wanted to they could create better quality models and environments, better than would be possible on the consoles, yet these car models aren't even equal to the better console racing game models.

Why push graphics in such insignificant ways?

Great, more stuff that will be impressive for half a second in the first game that uses it before everyone uses it and the public adjusts.

Dude, what!? I'm pretty sure just about every professional game critic has applauded Codemaster's engine. If it wasn't for that sepia tint, that game would look scary-real; even with the tint, the game is beautiful. Not just that, but there isn't a single game on the market that can match Codemaster's car deformation. The lighting is pretty superb too, like I said I find the way that the reflections are handled to be really convincing.

Just bought a Radeon 5870 about a week ago, all of the new ATI flagship 5XXX cards come with a Dirt 2 code. Loved the game on 360, looking forward to playing it at 60 FPS with DX11!

Why are people gettiing weirded out by the word "tesselation"? It's not even specific to CG, it just means tiling, essentially. They dynamically generate geometry and break it up into polys for smoothness. That shit is awesome.

Well, not like any of that matters.  I played the demo on 360, and it absolutely pales in comparison to GT5P or Forza 3 visually.  Fine for you I guess, but I think most people would agree with me on this.

I was under the impression before that they were going to use tesselation for say, the vehicles in the DX11 version of Dirt 2?  Even with that it may lack in some of the nice car shader effects, but it seems they're not even doing that.

No doubt Codemasters has good crash deformation, and they have nice crazy stuff going on trackside, it's just very underwhelming to me.

One doesn't need some new advanced hardware to excel in competitive multiplayer on PC; most tone the graphics settings down to really pare down the variables just to the player's skills, just as you are wont to prefer. One does not need to upgrade every time a new title comes out, unless that person is beholden to the latest and greatest graphics or some kind of obsessive tech junkie. I think this game will look just as fine on many dx10.1 cards as it does on dx11, for which it functions as some sort of banner title showcasing what it can do without vast performance hits associated with alternate physics rendering engines.

Not the hugest step forward in tech, but like the description says, there are some damn nice effects in that trailer.

It's such a shame that these features are in a PC racing game though. NOTHING against DIRT2, it's just that last time I checked, the PC racing game market was one of the least marketable types of games out there.

@Waffles13:  Consoles don't have the option of upgrading the hardware for new graphic technology. But hey Codemasters wanted to show off Dirext X11 sooner or later. And I'm pretty sure racing games are popular among PC gamers with so many racing sims available for it.
