The Elder Scrolls Online Celebrates the Opening of Beta Sign-Ups With a Fancy New Trailer

At least this game learned one thing from World of Warcraft. Namely, pretty-looking all-CG trailers that don't even remotely resemble the actual game. Marketing!

A genre I don't like set in a series I'm not that big a fan of?

Yeah... clearly not made for me.

MMOs are just a risky genre to develop for. You sure gotta have the cajones to go forward on spending so much time and money and not even sure if it is profitable or will last for as long as wishfully intended.

I'm trying to decided which part of this even looks like its from the elder scrolls.

Is there a wall scaling sequence in morrowind, oblivion, or skyrim that i missed? Or should I go back and play arena and daggerfall?

I like how none of the distinct TES races were in this trailer (Dunmer, Khajit and Argonian). Wouldn't want people to think your TES MMO would actually represent the series in any way what so ever.

Subscription based MMOs are dead for the most part. There are a few that manage to survive but I think starting a new one is a sure way to fail, look at TOR. They will need to be cheap or F2P to get a good market. That or they'll go F2P once they see the cash isn't coming in.

@Stonyman65: Last time I checked, it takes quite a while to make an MMO.

I understand that, but does anyone ever care about MMOs anymore? Especially one like this?

Well, considering they have been working on this game since 2007 (when everyone still thought you couldn't lose with a WoW clone), they've put in far too much work to scrap it because of a bad MMO climate.

@Hardtarget: Agree completely. I don't know that it's possible, after playing WoW for two years, to ever get me to purchase a boxed game and then get a subscription out of me. But I'm willing to try it for free to see what the hell the deal is, and if they have any prayer of attracting a significant number of subs.

I like to check out new mmos, but I'm done paying 60 bucks plus a fee to play. This needs to not follow tors business model.

Oh I hate MMO posts on here, not because I dislike MMOs, they provide an experience unlike any other genre and will one day evolve beyond the tab-targeting WoW clones we're stuck at currently. But the comments, ugh, they make me wanna punch something, more specifically the ones making said comments.

You people have NO idea what this game could potentially bring, TES has always been a boring, lifeless husk PURELY because it's always been a single-player series, with little to nothing ever going on outside towns save for fighting, all on your own, all on your own being a recurring theme. They never had great stories or any compelling reason to actually BE single player, just a bunch of side quests which, funnily enough, is a big factor in MMORPGs.

It's about damn time we got the chance to explore one of these great, highly-detailed worlds packed to the brim with content, with actual living people.

If that actually had any relevance to the game, it's going to play just like any other Elder Scrolls game, smartass. People would be going nuts if this was a trailer for yet another single player Elder Scrolls, but because in this one you actually have the opportunity to socialise with something besides cardboard cutout NPCs apparently it's gonna be the worst thing ever.

@civid: Altmer, Bretons and Nords are as distinct as any other race in the series. The beast races are actually rather marginalized within the games themselves, so I don't see what the issue is.

'Cause pretty much everything they do is awesome.

Yup, I love their stuff and wish more developers contracted them to do longer form videos. They seem to do a lot with what they are given, I loved the far cry stuff even though a lot of it was 'dude running in forest' really.

Nice CG, but generic as hell. I expected to see Legolas surf down some stairs on a metal shield and then high-five a dwarf.

I do agree with you to a point.

The thing is the other players will likely ruin it with the global chat, stupid character names, and general immaturity. The single player lacked that and it was for the better.

I do like the idea of an ES MMO, but I don't have high hopes they'll pull it off. I am going to give it the benefit of the doubt and at least try it before talking trash, unlike most people on here.

So it's set during the war between the Thalmor and the Empire, cool for new lore I guess. Still won't be playing this game, it will be nothing like a proper Elder Scrolls game from a gameplay perspective.

@Xeirus: You are correct, and it is unfortunate, other players are partly what makes MMOs potentially incredible, and part of what ruins them.

On one hand, FFXI, I have never enjoyed an MMO that much, purely because the playerbase, due to the game's design, were all for teaming up and taking on great challenges together and being civil. Many great moments were had in my time playing FFXI, despite its simplistic combat and dated mechanics, there was a lot to like about the game and its playerbase.

On the other hand you have the players you mentioned, stupid names, spouting inane nonsense purely for the purposes of irritating everyone else. And then you have the "me, me, me" crowd that wants all challenge taken out of an MMO so they can have everything asap because they feel that paying for the game entitles them to whatever they want from it right from the outset.

You're right, it has yet to be proven if this game is going to be any good or not, but from what I've read, it'll at the very least be something that shouldn't be disregarded right away. Sadly for whatever reason GB seems to attract the biggest crowd of MMO haters I've ever come across :/ who probably don't know anything about this game past the fact it's online and has "omg kewl CG video"

There was a Dunmer in the trailer though technically it could have just been a human painted blue because he had none of the features of a Dunmer. Another weird part was the Altmer not having gold skin and dark gold eyes. If the Mer races don't have their defining features and all look like beautiful humans with weird skin tones, what hope is there for this MMO?

It doesn't help that none of the crew likes MMOs much these days, people tend to follow their tastes and adopt them as their own.

It also doesn't help that most of the MMOs to come out recently are terrible jumbled messes. MMOs are just insanely hard to do right, and with a minimum 5 year development cycle they're usually outdated by the time they come out.

It's a whole big mess, I hope this one can at least hold interests for a while. I'd love for it to be good.

Standard teenage power fantasy bullcrap. This put me off the game more than it turned me onto the idea for the game. Look beyond the trailer and realise the demographic they must be aiming for with that trailer.

Elder scrolls online is gonna make x-box live seem mature.

Once again, I must make the point that if you do not show gameplay in your trailer or at least intimate something or give some information about what the game will be, you are effectively just lying to everybody and wasting everybody's time.

Can you imagine a movie trailer that didn't show any footage from the movie? Even the barest of teaser trailers for a movie at least shows something that is a real part of the final product and not this garbage.

This would have been cool, had it felt like it had anything to do at all with the Elder Scrolls world. But of course, they had to go with the stupid fucking anime-ification that most of these CG trailers get. And I like CG trailers but for once can they at least, ya know, elicit some sort of familiar response? At least put some familiar spells, races, etc in there. This just looked like generic bullshit. I'm especially tired of the overplayed ridiculously acrobatic assassin type character. Back in the day, the guys like that had to be fucking avatars of deities. Not just some guy.

You know, the weird thing is that even though I'm so heavily invested in Guild Wars 2 at this point and this game seems to have been taking many of the same design lessons (excepting healers and raiding, which... ugh), I'd probably play it if they didn't insist on having a subscription fee. The Elder Scrolls lore/world is interesting enough for me to want to give it a decent shot, but it's clear they're counting only on the brand to make them that $15/month, and regardless of whether it speaks more about their greed or lack of confidence in the shipping product I'm turned off as a consumer.

Eh. As CG trailers for games go, this is pretty mediocre. I'd cite the awesomeness of the TOR cinematics, but those were arguably the best thing about that game. I'll wait and see.

No Elder Scrolls VI please. I'm still fed up from Skyrim. I kinda wish Bethesda would make something entirely new that doesn't play like Skyrim, even though I spent more than 200 hours in New Vegas and Fallout 3
