The Elder Scrolls Online Gets a New Cinematic Trailer

I dunno, if I'm looking to force open a giant oblivion gate, I don't feel like big chains are the most foolproof method out there.

I'd agree with Alex about the chains but are they not a key feature in colharbour? You'd think they would be stronger though.

The primary draw for me with Elder Scrolls games has always been the power fantasy. The laughably over-powered magic, the world-changing plot with me at its center. And the hundreds and hundreds of hours of play that I get for $50 or $60. An MMO turns all that on its head. The only way this could work for me is if it's F2P, and even then it will just feel like I'm another nobody in a world full of nobodies, having no impact, leaving no mark.

I really wish Bethesda would just put co-op into the main series. Not interested in MMO's at all.

The trailer looks like the game would have a lot of environment destruction... if the trailer had anything to do with the game.

It was more of a battle montage. No dialog. I was surprised it is so long, since I have gotten used to short, to the point cinematics. If there was a dramatic effect intended, it fell flat for me. Big Chains, hmm. From a cinematic like this I'd like to get a feeling like fighting for something, instead of geting the generic "fight against zombie hordes", in the end.

I'm sure they will find more interesting things to show in future trailers. I'm looking forward to some gameplay.

Because if there's anything that the Elder Scrolls is known for it, it's the acrobatic, super-responsive fighting engine that excels in portraying fights against large numbers of enemies at a single time.

At a certain point this is just false advertising, isn't it?

I know what you mean, the whole time I was thinking "this looks like Dragon Age" the only thing recognisable as Elder Scrolls (besides the Imperial City) was that skamp that appeared for about half a second. And i've probably said this elsewhere but what kind of Elf is she supposed to be? She's not a Dark, Wood or High Elf. Fuck i'm a nerd.

Anyway, the best Elder Scrolls trailer was this one because it highlights the best assets of an Elder Scrolls game. The scale and diverse locations. I'll take a sprawling trailer of the landscape in-engine any day over this generic pre-rendered stuff.

I'll put up with an MMO if there is a proper Elder Scrolls game in there somewhere but I wont play a typical MMO if all they're doing is wrapping it in Elder Scrolls dressing.

@newhaap: Yup. Chances are if you see an awesome trailer/intro cinematic for/in a game that wasn't made by Blizzard it was made by Blur. Trailers for both The Old Republic and Force Unleashed 2. Trailer for Mass Effect 2. Intro for Injustice. Trailer for Dante's Inferno. Intro to X-Men Origins. Intros to Fable 2 and Fable 3. Batman Arkham trailers. Prey 2 trailer. DCO trailer/intro. Bioshock 2 and Infinite trailers. Halo Wars cinematics. Trailers for Dark Souls 2, Dishonored and Far Cry 3.

I've been in the past few betas now, and while I can't really say too much. The game itself is competent, just not the groundbreaking different approach to MMO's most people would like. Right now I think the biggest thing hurting them is the monthly sub. F2P with cosmetic only (of course) would be the way to go for them, right now, they're basically going to experience the same thing as SWTOR, (which has such a bad f2p model i haven't played it since conversion, and I subbed to that game at one point) except less people, because Elder Scrolls doesn't exactly have a non gamer following to draw from like SWTOR did.

Although i will say this game is probably better than SWTOR when I played that at launch, I just don't see it able to hold the sub numbers needed. The only way it can work is if they have actual realistic expectations about what those sub numbers will be, which is laughable, because everyone thinks they'll be WoW again. What everyone forgets is that WoW was originally designed to get by and sustain itself with a fairly small number of subs, less than EQ's steady player base, which was the current king at the time. (part of why the launch was such a clusterfuck if anyone else remembers trying to pick up loot for 10 mins when the game first came out) If they're dead set on keeping it a sub game, they need to approach from such an angle, cause they're not going to have 1mil+ subs, at least not steady 6 months after the game's out.

Skyrim sold 20 million copies, not saying this game won't tank or its subscription service isn't a terrible idea or whatever but Skyrim was an absolutely massive success. There are tons of Elder Scrolls fans out there.

No Star Wars game has ever even been close to those sales and that's including all those "non-gamer" Star Wars fans. Non-gamers aren't going to make or break this game (in fact it's probably bad marketing if you're relying on non-gamers to buy your games unless you're Nintendo in 2007). Other than that I agree with your post.

You raise an interesting point with the Skyrim sales numbers, but it seems like translating a successful franchise into MMO territory with its gameplay conventions inherently limits its appeal. WoW broadened the MMO audience, for sure, but I don't feel so certain that its formula will attract many more. The hardcore MMO communities will either keep on trucking in WoW or try it for a while and move on to the next game. Non-MMO-oriented Elder Scrolls fans may come for the world and the lore, be disappointed by generic gameplay and subpar presentation, and leave. And casual gamers could understandably be confused by the game's media coverage and never give it a go.

I don't mean to be so down about it. I'm absolutely rooting for ESO to succeed and would love to give it a go. But it's hard to convert an audience paying $60 for a long, polished, and crazy-moddable power fantasy into paying $60 + $180/year for a generic, laggy, and (if history is any judge) buggy side-story.

@spilledmilkfactory: as long as there is another half hour or so of similar quality cutscenes in the game, my purchase will be justified

If recent MMO's are anything to go by, then this trailer will be the intro cinematic and you'll get nothing else until the next expansion trailer.

Was it just me or did it seem to drop to lower frame rates in some sections. It was smooth most of the time but at some points it seemed rather choppy. Very odd.

Oh look, there are elfs and humans and something that looks exactly like a dwarf but is no dwarf. Oh and they also are fighter, mage and rogue how convenient. This looks completly different from every other MMO.

I played Skyrim, Morrowind and Oblivion. WHO are the bad guys again? Why do they only show the human-like races in the trailer instead of Orcs, Khajiit or Argonians which would make the game at least look a bit different? Are they even in the game?

To be fair, playing as Orcs isn't particularly novel in the MMO space...but Lizardfolk would certainly be up there. Have to agree on the overall generic look here, even the cinematic joining forces against a sudden new player was something War Craft III did more than a decade ago. Now if they pulled a 70's tabletop RPG twist and the holy trinity here pulled out laser guns to even the odds that'd be different.

Looks nice I guess. The only thing I hope for is that when this inevitably fails, they won't decide not to make Elder Scrolls VI: Hammerfell or whatever. Because that's the thing most people are actually waiting for.

I guess there's supposed to be a Fallout 4 somewhere in between all this.

Pretty much. That's why this game is taking place in the second era (I think) which is long before the Oblivion Crisis.

The Elder Scrolls Online takes place during the "Second Era" while Oblivion took place during the later "Third Era". I'm not sure how solid their dates for this game are, but it takes place hundreds of years (close to 1,000 even) BEFORE Oblivion.

Would have preferred a 4-player Elder Scrolls, a la Borderlands.

Absolutely this. Too bad someone couldn't mod in multiplayer, like someone did for JustCause2. Wasn't Skyrim a bigger thing that JustCause2?

To be fair, this MMO doesn't exclude the possibility of a co-op Elder Scrolls game happening someday. I would assume if there was going to be a proper Elder Scrolls with multiplayer, it'd be handled by Bethesda Game Studios themselves, not given to another studio to develop like ESO was.

While co-op in a traditional Elder Scrolls game is probably the Holy Grail, I'm still very interested in trying ESO -- but I also don't hate MMOs, nor am I generally a cynic ... unlike the majority of the people commenting on this trailer, apparently.

Honestly, I am interested in how ESO turns out, as I enjoy MMOs as well. I am just MOREinterested in having the ability to co-op in Skyrim. I already play WoW, and have played most of the major MMOs that have sprung up since I started with Everquest. I enjoy the genre, but I love me some Skyrim.

Wow, CG...impressive unless you sit and think about the fact the game play you will see in the game won't look anything like that...ever.

I know ZeniMax Online Studios thinks they are being terribly clever here with this cool CG of what you should have in you mind's eye when playing, but showing taht for a game that won't look liek taht is a dumb idea. Then again, ZeniMax Online Studios, is such a corrupt and worthless company why does it matter if they are truthful, I wouldn't mind if they lost millions of dollars down a dark hole for this crap

Except this kind of "CGI that looks nothing like the actual game" has been a staple of Blizzard games for years, including the king of the MMO genre for the last decade.

Does anyone even remember the opening cinematic for vanilla WoW? That shit looked awesome, and absolutely nothing like the game.

I like the Elder Scrolls games. Hence, I will give TES Online a chance. If it fails to grab me, then so be it. But fuck me oh my am I tired of the comments from people who have completely written this game off simply for either a) using some of the same tech as SWTOR, b) embracing some well-worn MMO tropes, or c) having the gall to try and exist in the same world as WoW. All without having actually played a minute of the game, no less.
