It's just the same thing, Where is the innovation? Like what about a female lead instead of a male? Why another "Tommy" like character in a San Andreas setting but in in a GTA 4 engine? After 3-4 years I expect less rehashing old ideas and something cutting edge from Rockstar.

@Napalm: It is possible to like both GTA & SR series. And to appreciate them for their differences. Saints Row is ridiculous OTT insanity, GTA is hopefully keeping more of the tone of 4 with a more gritty vibe. Plenty room on my shelf for both for both of them.

Though I will say one thing negative about Saints Row, I don't think they neccessarily have the same grasp of satire as the Rockstar North guys.

@fedorajay: You realise Saints Row 3 is out really soon? And GTAV is probably 18 months away yet, at least. I think you'll manage to just about finish Saints Row The Third by the time it's out. It's not a choice of one or the other. It's a choice of all, one or none. I pick all, personally.

Can we please not be the people who say "black dudes with tats, must be CJ!" and "White dude who commits crime, must be Tommy!" until we hear some actual names?

I was also expecting a woman. The interesting thing about the trailer is that it hits at the playable character (or one of the characters) is a family man. That would be a cool angle. Having a family would certainly raise the stakes and allow Rockstar to tell some interesting new stories in the GTA universe. There are certainly lots of good family/crime fiction to draw from(Sopranos anyone?)

The hype for a thousand Call of Duty/Battlefield games is still not nearly as bad or ever quite as disappointing as for one GTA game. It's barely just begun and I already want it to stop and go away.

How does the popularity of a few video games you don't like affect you in any way? If something isn't in line with my tastes I simply ignore it. Wild concept I know.

You had to go to a video game website and click on a Grand Theft Auto trailer just to tell the internet how much you wish you weren't exposed to GTA.

Hmm. I'm not sure what point you're trying to make here. I stated that I find the unreasonable hype around one game series/developer to be unavoidable and disruptive, more so than any other game. Commenting on that fact isn't going to make anything any worse. I wish it was easy to ignore, I really do.

If you want to tackle some real "meh" comment trolling, go into any Modern Warfare video/article on this site and have fun with that.

I won't be getting the new Modern Warfare, so I don't know about, nor do I care to familiarize myself with, any trolling going on with that game.

That's my point: if you really do want to rid yourself of some of the hype surrounding a game, limit your exposure to said game. It works for me, I don't know a damn thing about MW3.

I agree with you, and understand it won't be out for a while, but I find that when I try to play a GTA game I play it the way Saint Row advertises their game. I personally don't even care for the Saint Row trailers that contain story. If anything, I would like a GTA/Saints Row game where there is no story; just create a character, start in an empty house that you can buy/steal furniture/appliances for and just do whatever you want.

Basically, the Sims meets Saints Row.

This GTA debut trailer just didn't scream "wacky" to me, and I know all GTA games contain some degree of wackyness, so I'll still wait until someone, being Rockstar or a reviewer, exposes the wacky.

This trailer showed a location and a voice over. Let's not just jump to conclusions.

And would having a female protagonist really change the game? It wouldn't make the game less effective or anything, or less crime-filled, so what's the point?

Looks more colourful than 4, which is nice. I suspect that Rockstar's big push towards cinematic games will mean it's pretty grounded again though, so doubtless gamer reception will be poor.

I like what I saw of the city. Not much else I can get from the trailer without making assumptions. It's just an announcement trailer though, so I'm not disappointed or anything.

The amount of GTA hate in these comments is pretty stunning. Seems like just about everybody has passed judgement on this game based on a trailer that didn't even show any gameplay mechanics. What's the deal?

petty 12 year olds... This 1st trailer has plenty to chew on and has an old GTA fan like me quite excited. If GTAV is an improvement on the mechanics of GTAIV and has plenty of countryside environments, I'm thrilled...

I personally prefer Liberty City to all the other GTA locales, but regardless of where it's based at, any GTA game is going to be good. Hopefully. I mean, that totally was CJ later in the clip, so I'm not too excised about playing as him again; I was hoping for a new protagonist. Of course, just because he was in the trailer doesn't mean he is the main character....

After the fever dream that was the GTA4 launch, people fell back down to Erf and said that despite the "things will be different" thesis, it basically played the same as any other GTA, e.g. do what you will, and to hell with the consequences. I'd hope Rockstar takes this criticism into the development of the narrative, maybe insert a bit more personality into the main character. Hell, every GTA mission has been "follow your orders to a tee". Maybe this time around, you can have a little lee-way in how the mission plays out. Far Cry 2 tried to do something like that (but failed, because it was too cut and dry, and the end result was basically the same), but I think Rockstar can execute the idea much better.

And also, the gas stations should, like, look up the current gas prices online and have the in-game prices reflect that. And also, like, there should be a minigame where you, like, look down both sides of the street before crossing. Now that'd be fun!

I've changed my mind. I want to cycle up those mountains.

If this game actually has bicycles (like GTA4 should have), this is day-one for me.

Is this a joke? Seriously, being able to ride a bicycle in a video game is going to be a determining factor in whether you buy this game on day one or not? I think that is kind of funny.

I'm serious. I'd have gotten the game at some point regardless, but if you knew the amount of time I spent putting around the San Andreas wilderness in GTA:SA you'd understand.

Its Claude. CJ is in the trailer. And Claude and CJ met each other in GTA: San Andreas. And the whole family thing, perhaps Claude did not kill the girl he rescued and instead got married to her and moved back to Los Santos. And besides I think Tommy Vercetti is probably living just fine in Vice City.

Jeff hit the nail on the head about the GTA series: GTA games are always best set in America, poking fun at Americana. All this talk of setting it in the future or in Japan or having a female protagonist is just silly and contradictory to the nature of the series.

I'm sure this will be a fine GTA game but this didn't do anything to excite me. It didn't really show off anything crazy that you expect from the GTA games. This is most definitely a sequel to GTA IV and not what we played on the PS2, not that that's a bad thing but I found GTA IV showed its hand very early on. It had some really interesting things like the dating, internet etc but a lot of that stuff felt like fluff to me and every mission had the same structure of start at A, meet someone at B, shoot everyone you see at C.

Didn't Rockstar say they were done with the GTA3 universe? When asked about the "CJ is dead" thing in GTA4 they said something to the affect of GTA4 is the start of a new continuity and the CJ being dead thing was their way of saying goodbye to all the characters and stories from the previous GTA games.

Between GTA4 and Red Dead Redemption I'm kind of burned out on the "former bad guy wants to live a better life but gets sucked back in" motif. This sounded like more of that. It just wears thin when the dude is saying "I just want to have a quiet life" as he agrees to yet another murder spree.

It's been so long with so many good games that you forget why Rock Star is such a successful company, cause this looks awesome! I really want to see if they have the L.A. Noire facial animations, although it's not a deal breaker.
