@Bummey: It was pretty clearly all in-engine. Most of it gameplay. I don't know what you're on about.

it's going in a good direction, but I'd like to see some straight-up random game-play.

This video has done nothing to convince me that this would be better than other traditional MMOs out there other than the fact it has better looking animation.

Seriously, it was all "other games do this and that, but we won't do that!"

Because traditional MMO fans hated GW.

They're going to unveil pure gameplay at Gamescom, which should be in nine days. They're making it nearly impossible to withhold hype, but I'll keep my judgment until then.

Their PvP is calle WvWvW or World vs. World vs World. Each of these pits 3 servers together against each other. I think Warhammer would have worked in their huge battles had they done this instead of it being different factions against each other. This way, you just have different servers fighting each other. We will see but it is definitely a cool direction to take things. Server bragging rights that DON'T have to do with player size sounds enthralling to me.

Arena Net is very well run and I loved Guild Wars; until all the end game loot was just about the same and you had to grind the same things over and over.  Sounds like they might have fixed that. YAY!

Still, the new engine looks AMAZING. I am damn impressed, but the quality of the gameplay remains to be seen.

" How about they actually show some straight up gameplay instead of theatrical shit like this? I hate trailers that show everything but the actual game they're advertising. "
Most of that is gameplay taken in engine, you just can't see the hud. All the combat and all the environments were taken in engine, so it may as well be classified as gameplay.
Besides, even if it wasn't gameplay this isn't a gameplay trailer, it's letting people know what vision they have for the game, and the give an idea of the thought processes behind their design choices. Gameplay videos (with hud e.t.c.) will come out in about a week once they've had their playable demo at GamesCom.

As much as I love Star Wars..  GW2 seems to be going for a lot of the same ideas, but doing it far better.

The multiplayer and single player elements in TOR look too divided, the graphics are not good, classes and races are all dependant on your faction, it will almost certainly have a subscription, and the story elements - while better than what most MMO's seem to offer seem sparse and isolated amidst the regular MMO grind factor.

GW on the other hand seems to be trying to revamp everything from the story telling, down to the combat mechanics.  There's more of a focus on story, each player gets their own customisable "personal story" that progresses through the game, similar to what we saw in Dragon Age, they've elminated the grind further, along with e-peen waving contests, players benefit from working together, etc, etc..   I also have a lot more faith in ANet to develop a game like this.

It basically seems to be what SW TOR is trying to be.

Still playing the first one, and I'm longing for nr 2. Though I'm not sure about the skill system they've developed for GW2. But we'll just have to wait and see. A definite buy anyways.

Talk is cheap.  Grind is inherent in every progression based games, be they MMO, RPG or even shooters.  The act of taking your character to the next level is a grind, some just hides it better and make it less monotonous.  NCSoft's history has been fairly average, so I'll believe it when I see it.

This is true, there is always some kind of grind. But the kind of grind they were referring to was quests that make you do the same thing over and over, at least that's the impression I got. I think that NCsoft has had a pretty OK history so far too, but when you compare it to all the other companies making MMOs, NCsoft is pretty much one of the top-notch companies. Especially when you factor in all of those crappy Korean MMO companies that are made simply to drain money from preteens.

If they can truly deliver on the cause-and-effect system of what they're promising, then I may just have to get into Guild Wars.

The characters look great, the environments even better.  Best of all is the continued lack of a monthly fee.

Maybe you're misunderstanding what the term "grind" actually means. It is derived from the act of grinding away at a stone or similar material until you make something. Literally just repeating the same motion over and over until your stone is the desired size. That is what they are trying to get rid of. If they are "hiding it" then it is no longer a grind, as you most likely aren't repeating the same actions or quests over and over. Don't think that "Grind" is synonymous with "Leveling up" because they have the potential to be different things.

Anyone who doesn't think this game has some serious potential is out of their damn mind.

You are waaaay too optimistic.
Almost every MMO that comes out promises something revolutionary. Makes one more of a skeptic you know. Not that I don't hope for a breath of fresh air in the genre, it would indeed be interesting just how much of their PR speak they can deliver on.

If this can break the open world / instance loop that GW1 had it should be fantastic. The first game proved they could do graphics and the subscription-free is such a plus point however an MMO needs to have other players around (even if you are doing a solo grind) just for the atmosphere and to feel that it is a living world.

Doesn't quite have the lore behind it (that you would find in WoW, LotR, Star Wars or FFIV) and you do need some strong characters otherwise it feels a bit soulless. The MMO market is getting even more crowded each year but I hope this does well. Certainly worth checking out as NCSoft know their onions.

While I might be a cynic too, I prefer to have faith. I also avoid being disappointend by looking at a game from the developers point of view, once it's out. I ask myself: 'Why is it the way it is?'. Usually, most things are the way they are for a good reason. Feasiblity. Economical and technical. The few things that remain offputting are hopefully not gamebreaking for my sensibilities. I don't want to feel disappointend or cheated. I usually don't end up feeling that way. Anyways - sometimes I do. Mostly by MMOs. Albeit ArenaNet is the one MMO developer, who I believe is capable of shaking things up.

I remember the preview weekends of the first Guild Wars fondly. I was very impressed by their streaming technology, which was super advanced back in 2005. It took a 100kb installer and a minute of buffering data - already I was playing the game. Back then, there was only hubs, directed co-op instances with cutscenes et all and PvP battlegrounds and tournaments. Sadly, they lost that great focus on their best content by bringing in the somewhat subpar and lifeless questing zones, which watered down the greatness of what Guild Wars did better than the competition.

Nontheless - Guild Wars is the MMO I am most impressed with. From the business modell to their superior technology to the stunningly directed instances to the worldwide PvP tournament and the 'lootable/equipable' skill system in combination with the very freeform dualclass system. It had grand gamedesign, hamstrung by the extreme instancing and thus somewhat lacking persistence of the gameworld, as well as the inconsistent quality of the questing instances.

What's better than looting equipment? That's right! Looting an effin epic skill. I feel like I was the first in the world to collect the warrior's 'Gash' skill. It warranted me a long night of non-stop winning, until some Korean monk found the perfect set of counterskills. I still remember that night very fondly. The Guild Wars preview weekends are amongst my favorite gaming experiences I ever made. Too bad it didn't hold up in comparision with World of Warcraft, which just had much more staying power due to its persistent world. This time around, Guild Wars 2 sets out to have a persistent world aswell. Ontop of all the revolutionary stuff they're working on. Making the persistent world truely alive and interactive/reactive to the players' actions, is ArenaNet's loftiest of goals. If they succeed, they will rock the MMO world violently!

Stellar future indeed!

Here's hoping the game actually keeps up with the promises made so far. It'd be a real shame to see such a huge list of promises completely abandoned and have them end up giving us another WoW clone...

T_T  I wish they were making this Mac compatible...  I want to be a part of this so bad!

*fingers crossed*

EDIT:  Interesting finding.  It seems that approximately 10% of WoW players are Mac users (though the official number seems a closely guarded secret).  The original Guild Wars has sold upwards of 5M copies.  Assuming Guild Wars 2 also sells at least that many units, and assuming a Mac version would wrangle in another (let's low-ball it) 250,000 units sold (+5%), at $50 apiece that's: $12.5 million.  How is it financially sound not to make a Mac version?

I didn't understand the hype behind this game, so I watched this hoping to get it.  I still don't get it.  This game looks fucking terrible.   I give them credit for unabashedly busting out the hyperbole hyping their game though, masterful work.  These people should work for Peter Molyneux.

It's hilarious though that they gripe against how MMO's make you grind.  Guild Wars 1 was only grinding.  In terms of moment-to-moment action, Guild Wars makes WoW look like Uncharted.
