@artisanbreads: Of course there were similar games before Hotline Miami, but come on, this game is hugely inspired by HM. Even the music in the trailer is similar. I'm not saying that it's a clone, but you have to be blind to not see how similar it looks to HM.

Let's hope the different inspirations can make it a different enough experience.

Obviously, but just saying everything is a clone is lazy.

If it is much more of a shooter, as it appears to be, than it'll be its own thing.

Im 13 and I've only played 2 video games in my life so this is definitely a clone

I could only just see this notification but laughed my ass off.

Looks cool. Bloodiness reminds me of Project: Overkill, though not isometric.

Don't know if anyone has already mentioned it but there's a developer diary/thread over at TIGSource.

If only it had a bullet time dodge/slide as well, that would be great.

They really shouldn't put out trailers until a game is either out, about to come out, or at the very least has a release date. As if the wait for HM2 wasn't agonizing enough, now this one is going to be on my mind too. D:

To me, this looks way more interesting than Hotline Miami 2 so far.

Call me crazy, but I agree...

.

As much as I loved H.M. and am not against the idea of another one, the sequel has failed to stir up any emotions so far.

If this game can elicit the same feeling that the office levels in Max Payne 3 did, I am definitely in. Comparisons to Hotline Miami are inevitable, but calling this a clone? C'mon now.

This is an outrageous ripoff. Supporting a game like this is bad practice as a consumer. They've even got the 'dude spreads his arms and fires when you hold down the button' from Hotline Miami 2.

2014: The year Gameloft took over.

They had that before the trailer that showed off that in Hotline Miami 2 was even out. Also don't act like Hotline Miami created top down shooters.

If someone can earn a decent living from a game like this, then what incentive do developers have for pushing forward and bringing new ideas to the table if all you have to do is copy, paste and receive praise?

So you just ignored the whole part of me saying that this is no way ripping off Hotline Miami 2? This is as much of a rip-off of Hotline Miami as Hotline Miami is a rip-off of something Crimsonland or even Smash TV.

I dunno, half of what made Hotline Miami so great was the atmosphere, the strobing lights, clanky music and general weirdness of the entire thing. This game seems heavily focussed on the gunplay... I dunno, there are more enjoyable games I could play if I just wanted to shoot stuff.

Adieu by Revin Goff. Lucked out on that link on a Youtube upload of this trailer. Definitely my speed. I hope the game can differentiate itself from Hotline Miami, but if the worst case is just a straight up Hotline Hong Kong, I'll still be down for it. John Woo and violence based twitch puzzles sounds like lightning in a bottle.

So the only similarity between this and Hotline Miami is the perspective, right? That, and both developers being Swedish.

And let us not forget that thy hotline of miami was just a contained indie version of the first GTA, no idea is original, plus the seemingly John Woo angle might take it a whole different direction

Seriously guys? In Hotline Miami, if you were shooting dudes it was because you had already screwed up. That game was totally about the melee. This game looks specifically focused on the action movie thing of improbably shooting a bunchy of dudes in rapid succession before they can shoot you. Interesting, and not Hotline Miami.

I respectfully disagree! Guns totally have their place in Hotline Miami, whether it be firing off a single shot just to lure a bunch of guys around a corner into the room you're in, or quickly firing off a magazine towards some offscreen enemies and picking off a few guys right before you switch back to a melee weapon and retreat around a corner.

Melee was definitely your primary method in that game, but there's something to be said for emptying a magazine into a bunch of dudes, realizing there's one guy left and you're out of bullets, then throwing that assault rifle across the room and bopping him in the face and then jumping him.

Setting totally matters for defining clones. For instance, setting dynasty warrior like mechanics within slavic nations would feel like a very different game, even without slight changes like between dynasty and samurai. That said, HK action setting with very little melee feels 'different enough'.

I need more Hong Kong Cinema/John Woo style games in my life. How is it that we have only had Stranglehold and Sleeping Dogs, the setting seems so perfect for the over the top nature of games.

"guys hotline miami is the first and only top down shooter ever, all games otherwise are clones" -everyone who called this a ripoff/hotlike/what have you.

There's similarities. But I bet there's probably a ton of differences too. Game looks pretty cool, though.

There's clearly a Hotline Miami vibe you get from the design, no doubt. But if you read anything from what the developer says, or pay attention to what's going on in the trailer, the gameplay is significantly different. Think more like Max Payne with an overhead view.

I am so happy to see people not caring about the clone argument. Just like everything with cover mechanics was a clone of Gears, even though games had that before Gears. HM was good but the soundtrack was the reason for that, or at least that's what I really liked about it. The rest was just "ok" in my opinion, but that's beside the point. My point is, what's wrong with some more brutal shooter action? Not like we are flooded with options in that respect.

I'm not immediately opposed to a John Woo inspired Hotline Miami homage. Especially if there's a mechanic based around all dual-wielding and dual-targeting that was going on in the trailer. Also: doves. There'd better be lots of slow motion dove action.

They need to tone down the blood spatter if they're trying to emulate John Woo. His movies were bloody, but not to that extreme.

Its not a clone, its a Hotline Miami-em-up. A new genre!

That was a pretty slick trailer, though. I'm all for more of the same when it's done well, which this certainly appears to be.

Two notes:

First, keep in mind that a giant (perhaps even majority) percentage of the appeal of Hotline Miami is the aesthetic. This seems to be similar inasmuch as it will probably live or die by its aesthetic, but it's so different and evocative of a different thing that I give it a pass for any similarities.

Second, this looks a little more balletic to Hotline's balls-out twitchiness. I haven't played it yet, but it certainly looks like it'll have a very different feel.

Definitely excited though, late 20th century Hong Kong action movies are an awesome style to emulate.
