The Sims 4 Shows Off its Home Building Tools

Build the home of your Sims' dreams. Or, build the tiny trash hovel of their nightmares. Do Sims even have nightmares? Maybe we'll find out about that in the next video.

Can I build a teepee? That's what I really need to know.

Edit: Or a yurt. I'd settle for a yurt

Where's the basement garage? And the valley lot? I want to build on hills again. 3 went flat and I hope 4 borrows from 2, not 3.

Yes, wall heights and better window placement! Always was the thing missing to be able to build interesting houses.

I also vastly prefer the art style over the Sims 3, it feels more like a natural evolution from the first two games.

I would guess the catch is all the expansion and millions of overpriced DLC furniture, just like in Sims 3.

So how will Alexis kill everyone in Sims 4? I'm guessing everyone will burn or drown. Maybe somehow both.

So I assume they are removing all the advanced build tools from Sims 3? It looks like they simplified a lot of stuff, but I'm guessing that means they removed the ability to do split level houses or basement garages and the like. Too bad =(

Woah that's looking pretty slick.

I just hope there's enough furniture and decorations to choose from to make homes as unique looking inside. Without having to spend a fortune on DLC and expansions, I mean.

As much as I've always enjoyed playing The Sims, I've always found it to be one of the more grubby games for squeezing money out of folks who want a greater variety of things to choose from. In that sense, the base games always feel kinda barebones.

EA has to be EA somewhere along the lines, I guess.

I wouldn't give up hope on that just yet. It's a short preview video, and I'm sure there are more advanced tools to be had that wouldn't fit into the quick demo they wanted to do. It would be weird to do a step backward in that regard, but we won't really know until we get more info. Here's hoping!

The only true way I can make a purchase worthy option is to watch Alexis do a quick look of this. Human Zoo possible? Can you set off fireworks in the kitchen? Place beds outside? Make a "death bed" of remembrance for the recently departed? I need him to make a Giant Bomb household run through. If Alexis isn't included in the quick look of the Sims 4....we riot!

Faces look just like the Sims 3 weird 'pillow faces', so I'll say they probably borrowed a lot from the last game.

(...)

I would't hold high hopes for that, friend.

The main cash grab in Sims game was always to get you constantly returning each time an expansion came out. Not to mention the thousands of single items in the EA store, like clothes and pieces of furniture.

I didn't buy into it much in Sims 3, but I'm sure EA has been perfecting their micro-transaction machine just for this.

@thegorilla: THIS IS KIND OF A TERRIFYING QUESTION.

Spending hours decorating their house and having them live their life only to kill them all when you grow bored of them is pretty much how you play The Sims.

There is a reason most expansions introduce new ways to kill your sims and new ghost types related to them. This is the best video I could find with most of the deaths in Sims 3:

@gike987: The Sims has always been like that though so that's not really a surprise. Like with Sims City and Battlefield 4, those games were fucked and going forward I can only feel that every EA is exactly that.

@damehasclass: It just looks to me like they are moving towards a even more "casual" (I hate that word) friendly approach to the entire game. In an of itself this isn't a bad thing, since most of the Sims' audience would probably fall into that category. Any tools in the previous games that were considered too complicated or not polished enough for the "casual" audience were just hidden away in cheat menus. From the video it looks all the advanced tools from the sims 3 have been added to the core building toolset, which probably means they are no where near as versatile.

I definitely hope that I'm wrong, but it just seems like this new Sims is falling into the same traps as Simcity, in that they are alienating the "core gamer" audience in favor of the more "casual" playerbase.

Oh god Alex, what have I done. I was just talking about locking everyone in the house and watching the trash pile up like they did on the last Giant Bomb charity stream. Please don't think I'm a monster. It's just that in my experience that's what people enjoy doing more than watching sims go to work.

I remember people used to build a two story house and then delete the bottom floor with all the sims stuck on the second story. That kind of stuff. Not like SAW.

Man, the tech behind these games is utterly baffling / mind-blowing. Imagine if there were game-making tools half as powerful as the Sims.

They already said this wouldn't be the case after Sim City. I doubt they will mess this game up too much, they probably don't want to mess with the ridiculous cash cow that all the DLC and expansions for this game is.

I don't even want to think about how much it would cost to buy Sims 3 and all the expansions. Hopefully Sims 4 comes with at least some of that stuff from the get go.

Microtransactions where you have to pay a couple dollars for different furniture/clothing/tilesets etc.

Sims don't "have" nightmares, they get willfully thrown into them - like the last time @alexisg and @dannyodwyer decided to do a charity livestream.

Oh man! I broke up Bella and Mortimer Goth way back in the original Sims. I wondered for a while why Bella's "little sister" and "brother" were so mad at me following that. Completely missed that one. Actually felt bad about it once I realized the super obvious.
