Why is this being hyped so much? It really just looks like a standard platformer. I'm not saying its bad but it doesn't look that good either.

I feel the complete opposite. I believe "imagineer" is just a synonym for "massive wanker".

Looks great, can't wait to play this. I love seeing the old vintage Disney stuff and how it's inspiring the videogames and art of today.

I went to Disney World for the first time this past Summer.  It was one of the best weeks of my life.  I think that's contributing greatly to my enthusiasm for this game.  That and the fact that Warren Spector is a genius.

What about Mario Galaxy makes it not a standard platformer? What about Donkey Kong Country Returns makes it not just a standard platformer? It's also one of Warren Spector's first game in years.

Is it more or does the Kingdom Hearts PSP game visually look better than this? Plus they have voice acting and real cut scenes.

@zoner Galaxy messes with every standard and expectation of the platform genre and offers experiences unlike anything played before in a mainstream triple A platform title, most of these standards were set by the Mario series and it's great to see the plumber manage to maintain and ALTER the norm for platformers with such mechanics as the wall jump and the laws of physics being altered entirely to create wonderfully creative levels. Mario survives the onslaught of platforming negativity because its one of the few series' that reinvents itself enough to create a new experience each time rather than relying solely on nostalgia and brand appeal like Sonic has seemed to do this year with Sonic 4.

So far Epic Mickey looks GREAT visually but run of the mill mechanically. The game is way overhyped based on the devs previous, non-platform game experience. Sorry to be so cynical but there has been little to show this game as anything special, I predict a 3-4 star review for the games charm and average gameplay. Would be a lower score expectation if I didn't believe in Disney's ability to tug on heartstrings.

You're forgetting the paint element of Epic Mickey that hasn't been done before. Okami did a painting style, but not as a straight up real time weapon in the way Mickey does it, where he paints in things or erases them. It's not hugely innovative, but what is with gaming media and it's obsession with innovation? Why can't something just be fun, but with a different setting? I'll gladly take an unoriginal game that has a great script, design, gameplay over a poorly made indy game that allows you to equip cats on your head. Also there's a morality system, or some sort of it. Granted that's nothing new, but I'm pretty sure it's the first time it has been done in a platformer.

I just stick to my original thought, though. Why does something need to innovate to be 5 stars? Eventually we'll run out of ideas, and then what? Every game will be 4 stars or below?

I'm actually looking quite forward to this surprisingly. Those old Mickey Mouse games on the 16bit were actually pretty damn good. Kirby Epic Yarn, Epic mickey, and Goldeneye 007. I actually have a  reason to power on the Wii again.

Hub-world platformers were my staple genre on the N64 and it's sad that they've died a dead. Even Mario has abandoned the hub and big, open environments in favour of old-school linear platforming.

While I agree not every 5 star game has to be innovative, just as long as it uses it's mechanics in a way that the game is a fun enthralling experience, I just don't know about this one. I'll probably borrow my nephews Wii to play the game(and Galaxy 2 which I haven't played yet) but I just haven't been able to attach myself to Epic Mickey in any way yet. I'm willing to admit I could be eating my words when the games out and I get my hands on it.

Is it so wrong of me, that I keep thinking "Imagine this game on one of the HD consoles"?

The art style looks really great regardless, but the graphics whore within me demands more pixels.

This is treading very close to the Denis Dyack / Peter Molyneux territory - selling the game as a huge, deep, one-of-a-kind crafted experience. Captain Hindsight tells us that we just get oversold a limp fish with ideas above it's station.

The previews have been pretty cold - the gameplay doesn't seemed to match what they hype suggests. How do they think they can sell a kids game that is too dark for kids and a license too infantile for older players?

Oh and Rapture was probably a better model for the classic Disney era ... there was always a poisonous apple for every fairy princess.

I can see where you're coming from.  By now even the "HD" consoles graphics are looking pretty muddy compared to PC's.  The art style is still tremendous, but this was always going to happen to the Wii.

I don't think this has anything to do with being a graphics whore.  The idea of having all these little references to Disney World is VERY appealing to me, infact, I pre-ordered the game immediatly after watching this video.

But I can't help but feel it could have been really amazing with bigger, more detailed environments.  I'd love to be able to explore a sandbox version of Disney World like this..  Seeing such a small representation of Main Street USA with a literally a JPEG of Cinderella's castle in the background is slightly disappointing and feels like wasted potential.
