That looks a lot like the first video game I ever played, Interstellar Assualt (which was a Game Boy version of a Gradius game).

EDIT: Here, for anyone interested:

Interesting. Would it be to crazy to assume it coming to steam and perhaps other consoles in about a year?

At around 3 minutes I started to zone out. I went into deep contemplation about life. Thinking about college, past relationships, etc. Around 7 minutes in I realized that I had been watching an absurdly long gameplay video with no voice over of a dreamcast game that I had almost no interest or intention in playing since I don't actually own said dreamcast system.

Yeah...

Haven't Dreamcast had an pretty active homebrew scene for quite a while now, with several commercial releases in the past 5 years or so? The SEGA Genesis also got a couple of new releases in the past couple of years, and I'm pretty sure there have been more new Atari 2600 games than just Halo 2600 too.

Don't get me wrong, it's cool that it's getting covered, but it's not an new phenomenon.

What do I do? Download the game and burn it? Not that I've done that with other games on Dreamcast. I totally, totally haven't. Really.

Have you ever done a feature/interview about these developers who release games for old systems, either homebrew or full commercial releases? If not, I think it would be interesting to hear about what motivates them. Did they grow really attached to these systems growing up and want to make sure they'd never stop getting new content? And I can't imagine there being much of a profit from the commercial releases (though I could be wrong).

Apparently this was a Kickstarter started a year and a half ago: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/redux/redux-dark-matters-a-shmup-for-sega-dreamcast

Say wha?! There's more new stuff coming out for the goddamned Dreamcast than for either of new consoles right now. Still, it's cool that this exists.

As for the game, it looks like R-Type with a lot of caramel popcorn thrown in. Neat.

Good job I guess, but I couldn't be less interested in sidescrolling shooters of this ilk on any platform, let alone on an older one I don't own. I would be more interested if it seemed like they were working up against the platform's hardware limitations in interesting ways, but this game seems pretty safe from that perspective too. Could be wrong though, I ain't no developer!

I like when this stuff happens, but this game looks kind of boring outside of the whole "hey guys, it's 2014 and we made a Dreamcast game!" But, maybe I'm just missing what makes it interesting. I'll be honest, I tuned out about two minutes in.

Well good luck to them. Looks like it plays alright, maybe a little easy on whatever setting they are showing here.

A similar (but better imo) developer still releasing dreamcast/neo geo games is NG Dev Team. They tried crowdfunding to get their recent Dreamcast Turrican-type game onto 3DS/WiiU but it got nowhere near the goal. I guess developers choose older consoles because its much cheaper/easier to release on...?

Yeah, I actually backed this Kickstarter (mainly just on the weirdness of a new Dreamcast game, but I think shmups are pretty fun too); it was a little touch-and-go since they overshot their schedule by quite a bit - pair that with a lack of communication and you start ending up with some antsy backers. I'm glad they seem to be finally shipping it out though.

My understanding is that the homebrew and/or shmup scene is still active for the Dreamcast, so maybe that motivated the devs im part? These are good questions you have posed.

All of the ways to contact the dev team from the Kickstarter page are dead.

<checks price, 36 Euros or $54.66CAD>

Hi, what do you do? Oh, I been spending the last 2 years developing a game for the Dreamcast. Really?.... well cool.

I have to admit I still have my Dreamcast, but I don't know how many others do. Hey, maybe all that were sold are still around with their owners just waiting for a new game! I pulled mine out a few months ago to see if it was still working and it was! I played a little Grandia 2 and ever since I have been considering breaking it out again and finishing the game.

I wish hardware manufacturers would just support the homebrew community for their defunct old systems and offer full developments for a nominal fee. WIth the dev kit you get full rights to develop and distribute games all day long.

I don't understand how the gameplay works. They clearly got hit, but I saw no lifebar (the two bars at the bottom left appeared to be energy bars, related to their guns), and sometimes they didn't even bother dodging, and didn't die, but then they did die a couple times, to things that hadn't killed them a moment ago. Also, they went right past that powerup that was only a few pixels out of their path. 0_o`

At least one good thing came of this though: I was inexplicably reminded of Operation Spacehog. Man, that was a fun game.
