PLEASE continue to do Quick Looks, and especially if you could get Lang or Max. That would possibly be the best possible situation to come out of your moving.

The way to retain our history and culture of video games is to return to sane copyright laws. That was the other half of copyright that people forget. EVERYTHING was supposed to return to the public domain after the creators were allowed to make their cash.

That clearly is not how it currently works.

With the DMCA, and the fact that all "current gen" games are encrypted on disk, it is a federal crime to circumvent the copy protection (the encryption) to make a backup copy to run in an emulator. I don't think that "hackers will find a way" is necessarily something that can be relied upon to preserve our culture. And what about all the weird stuff that wasn't popular enough for someone to go thru the effort to crack? Gone.

Aw, I hope they indulge you some Dream Course come that final week. I'm looking forward to the madcap nonsense the guys will be doing to send you off on a high note. It'll probably still struggle to out-madcap E3 this year, though. Yeesh.

That rundown of the podcasts you listen to was pretty enlightening, but how the hell do you find the time? Do your commutes take hours, or do you spend a lot of time listening to them while working on other things? (I should save these questions for another video, probably.)

Thanks for this, Patrick -- I really enjoy these candid videos; it helps lend some perspective not only on your character, but on your professional credibility and focus as well. I've appreciated the opportunity to get to know you, and I only hope you'll continue making content that is both professional in quality and personal in perspective.

It is absolutely absurd for you to pass off people's disagreements with Anita's feminist argument on the simply fact that Anita is a woman or that Anita is a so controversial. You do not get to dictate people's reasons for disagreeing with Anita's very one sided, problematic and false argument. Given all the reply videos to Anita's tropes crap I would think you'd realize that the hatred isn't that "Oh she's a woman!" or "Oh she's a feminist who's criticizing our beloved vidja games!" NO! It's that she's an ignoramus who is criticizing, not analyzing, the characters and stories in video games in ways that don't make sense and if you actually watched and listened to any of the hundreds of videos on youtube refuting her argument you might realize that it has little to do with Anita.

On the subject of paranormal experiences, I've had a ton of them. Mainly encountering shadow people.

My earliest childhood memory is waking up in the middle of the night, still young enough to be in a crib and seeing a shadowy figure sitting in the rocking chair. I don't remember my reaction.

When I was about 5 or 6, some friends, my older brother, and myself were daring each other to enter the spooky abandoned house that was next door to my aunt's. We would occasionally hear voices coming from it, and one day the side door was open. When I looked into it I saw a small, formless, semitransparent figure about the height of a tire move across passed the top of the stairwell. Sufficed to say it sacred the hell out of me and I ran away.

When I was about 12 or 13, my cousin and I were up late playing SNES games at my grandma's old house (located in the middle of the woods mind you) when we heard something running down the hallway. We both looked at the door, heard something slam into it, the door shook visually, and we heard the sound of something falling to the floor. There was noone else in the house other then my cousin, grandma, and myself. No pets. We locked the door.

Many years later, I was staying over at my now (thankfully) ex-girl friend's house. She had said her basement was haunted and that also happened to be where we were hanging out. She had gone upstairs for something I was sitting at her computer when I noticed a small shadowy figure run down the hall, stop, turn a formless head towards me, then turn and move up the stairs. It was odd because it wasn't scary, just sort of happened.

Once when driving home from a friend's house who lived in the middle of some farmland, I noticed a shadowy figure in the rear view mirror. When I turned, it faded away before my eyes. This then happened on at least 2 other occasions when driving home late at night.

Lastly, when I was living alone in Long Island, I entered my bathroom one morning (around 5 or 6 am) and noticed what looked like a lady in large dress standing around the bath tube (one foot in, sort of). When I hit the lights, she was gone.

While visiting my dad's during college I was home alone (everyone else had gone to some family friend's party or something) when I heard a woman crying coming from one of upstairs bedrooms. The way the house is set up is the living room and upstairs hallway are open to one another, so you can see the door to the room from the living room. That's the room that my grandpa passed away in. I don't know why that sound would be coming from there though it was fun to tell my younger brothers about it as at that time it was there bedroom.

Since moving out to Seattle I haven't had any similar experiences. Which is disappointing as I live in a house that was built in the 1920s.

@bishop113: but she isn't making an argument...she is taking a broad look at video games through the lens of various tropes that appear in these games. she then commenting on how these tropes can be read in the context of these games.

I don't figure I'll convince you duder, but I can't let this one slide just in case others happen to read your comment. The vast majority of criticism of Anita and her tropes in video games series (which so far has been pretty stellar) happened before there was even any content to criticize. One doesn't create and distribute a game glorifying violence against a blogger (The beat up Anita game) because you disagree with their arguments, one doesn't send vitriolic sexist insults and death threats because you find fault with her point of view. That dispels the very notion that people are merely critical of her arguments, they are not - they are threatened by a strong female video game player that is calling out a history (and contemporary reality) of very regressive depictions of women in an industry that isn't maturing as fast as it is growing.

If you're up for it, feel free to link me to one (the one you think best makes the critique you agree with) of the youtube rebuttals you're referring to. I promise I'll watch it, if you can try and keep an open mind about Anita's series.

These debates are all part of these growing pains, this industry is changing and for the better. Anita is an avid game player and even if you can't bring yourself to agree with her, everyone should be open to hearing out her arguments.

Thanks for doing these videos, Patrick! Hopefully they continue once you are all set up in Chicago. Good luck with the move!

The discussion and problems of game preservation really bum me out as well, Patrick, it's not just you. This is why the all-digital future scares me! I still buy physical copies of games whenever possible about 99% of the time. Picking up Animal Crossing this morning off the eShop is one of my very few exceptions :P
