@evil_bunny_hat: Agreed man. He seems like one of the most approachable guys on the team, and the one that always seems to have an alternative perspective, good or bad. He keeps TNTs and UFs fresh, and he's a great content writer too. Hopefully he'll keep up the output of great content once he gets settled.

It is absolutely absurd for you to pass off people's disagreements with Anita's feminist argument on the simply fact that Anita is a woman or that Anita is a so controversial. You do not get to dictate people's reasons for disagreeing with Anita's very one sided, problematic and false argument. Given all the reply videos to Anita's tropes crap I would think you'd realize that the hatred isn't that "Oh she's a woman!" or "Oh she's a feminist who's criticizing our beloved vidja games!" NO! It's that she's an ignoramus who is criticizing, not analyzing, the characters and stories in video games in ways that don't make sense and if you actually watched and listened to any of the hundreds of videos on youtube refuting her argument you might realize that it has little to do with Anita.

I don't figure I'll convince you duder, but I can't let this one slide just in case others happen to read your comment. The vast majority of criticism of Anita and her tropes in video games series (which so far has been pretty stellar) happened

there was even any content to criticize. One doesn't create and distribute a game glorifying violence against a blogger (The beat up Anita game) because you disagree with their arguments, one doesn't send vitriolic sexist insults and death threats because you find fault with her point of view. That dispels the very notion that people are merely critical of her arguments, they are not - they are threatened by a strong female video game player that is calling out a history (and contemporary reality) of very regressive depictions of women in an industry that isn't maturing as fast as it is growing.

If you're up for it, feel free to link me to one (the one you think best makes the critique you agree with) of the youtube rebuttals you're referring to. I promise I'll watch it, if you can try and keep an open mind about Anita's series.

These debates are all part of these growing pains, this industry is changing and for the better. Anita is an avid game player and even if you can't bring yourself to agree with her, everyone should be open to hearing out her arguments.

Come one, how can you put every critic of Anita in one basket with that guy? The unrest before the videos was because of her Kickstarter, countless people at youtube have proven that you don't need the financial backing of anyone to make videos, she has proven that herself by having already uploaded videos at her channel.

It doesn't help that she removes the comment section and ratings. If her arguments were so strong and then why deny public discussion? Trolls and make me a sandwich jokes are too much? It must be the men that are on a holy quest to oppress women despite the progress that was made in the last century!

"Strong female video gamer", i don't buy that. In her college thesis she only talks about TV shows. Maybe you thought that the picture of her standing next to a pile of video games is her own collection, nah those were sent to her.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p6gLmcS3-NI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJihi5rB_Ek

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bwwFx-tz9TY

Like the tweet Patrick linked to a couple of weeks ago, it's pretty funny that everybody seems to agree that Youtube's comment section is the untreated sewage water of the Internet up until the moment a feminist disables it on her channel, then it suddenly becomes a place of informed and rational discussion that is violently silenced by the feminazis.

With infinite time and resources, everybody can do everything for free, why are we expected to pay for some games when stuff like Dwarf Fortress, UnReal World and Aliens TC are available for free?

Funding lets them set aside time to focus specifically on the project in question, gathering research and production material and whatever else is needed, while free projects are something you generally have to shoehorn in when you have spare time, which can make the production time expand to years or decades (as with Dwarf Fortress and UnReal World).

I think what I've seen of her videos so far aren't as well researched and academic as I would've hoped, but there are plenty of blogs and editorials critically examining her arguments in a civilized, rational manner, no need to open the flood gates on the youtube comment section.

@jjweatherman: Haha. I've never had any malevolent paranormal stuff happen to me though . My older brother has though. Once he laying on his bed, went to sit up when some invisible thing hit hard enough in his face to cause a nose bleed. Apparently he was home alone. I'm not sure about that story though as he does smoke a lot of pot and may have been high at the time.

Though it does remind me of another time when I was young and at my aunt's house. I was alone and playing under a blanket (probably pretending it was a cave or something silly like that) in the living room when a pillow landed on me. The pillow was from my aunt's bed which was down the hall from the living room with the door shut, and my aunt was outside at the time. The pillow would have had to round a corner to land on me. It was the middle of the day too.

@patrickklepek Please please find a way to keep doing those indie game quick looks. They made me aware of so many interesting titles with original ideas that I wouldn't have known about otherwise and broadened my perspective of what's out there in the game industry. Best of luck in Chicago.

Patrick has been a great addition to the crew over the last two years. He's copped alot of shit from the community, but has won himself a following (myself included) by how he an quickly dissects points into an entertaining story or argument. I look forward to the GB crew expanding even more to add someone else in future who can contribute just as much.

@patrickklepek Alright i'm just at 09:30 now but i think i can answer this difficult moral question with just 1 word. Wagner. there you are welcome!

for the people who want a longer explanation:

If you think games are art, then why not look at the arts for your moral questions? In case someone doesn't know, Wagner was a famous German composer and is seen as one of the greatest composers there ever was......also he might have been kind of into the whole nazi thing and hitler was a big fan of him. And while a small percent of people do refuse to listen to his work because of this, most people just enjoy the beauty and greatness of the art and forget he might be punched to death if he was alive today. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Wagner

Love the Bear Down Podcast and I hate sports.

The last third or so of Indigo Prophecy is absolute drek. So terrible. But most of it is excellent. The first scene manages to set such a mood (and I played it way way long after the types of graphics on display were acceptable). Definitely a worthwhile experience though.

@patrickklepek About the supernatural stuff, here's my little story :

What happened to me wasn't actually supernatural, it was only a side effect of sleep paralysis, but since I had no idea what sleep paralysis even was at the time, I was absolutely conviced what I saw was real.

If you don't know what sleep paralysis is, it's a sleep disorder that causes your body to stay "asleep" when your brain wakes up, so you are fully conscious but can't move a muscle. Also, it can cause hallucinations... Again, I had no idea this was a thing at the time.

The first time it happened I was alone in my bed early in the morning. I woke up, started panicking when I realized I couldn't move, and then I noticed one thing about my room was wrong. There was a staircase that led to a trapdoor on my ceiling (the staircase doesn't normally exist, but the trapdoor does). I closed my eyes and heard footsteps coming down the stairs (at that point I'm in full panic mode), when I opened my eyes again I just barely saw a silouhette exiting my room and closing the door. This is where it gets weird.

I closed my eyes again for a few minutes, and when I opened them, a pair of baby hands (like... the hands of a baby, not making this up) that seemed to come from behind my head were hovering in front of my eyes and started moving up and down. I felt a shiver in the back of my head that moved in rhythm with the hands, like they were actively trying to pull my brain out or something, and that's when my body decided to wake up.

Waking up from sleep paralysis doesn't feel like waking up from a dream. it just looks like the weird stuff suddenly disappears, which contributed to me thinking all of it was real. You are in the same spot, your room looks exactly the same, it's the same time of day, everything is exactly as it was 5 seconds before except for the weird baby hands with giant arms coming from behind your head. I remember the first thing I thought was "I can't believe these things actually exist !"

It's the single most frightening and disturbing thing I have ever experienced. It happened maybe a dozen times over 3 or 4 months, each time with the ghostly figure stalking and the baby hands covering my eyes, with slight variations, and each time I woke up convinced I'd just seen a ghost for real. It actually fucked me up pretty bad.

Remember that part in the last Spookin' with Scoops where you were stuck on the chair in the white room, waiting for the loading bar to fill up ? I think that gives a pretty good idea of what sleep paralysis felt like to me, except you think it's real. The worst is that feeling of helplessness. The only thing you can do is wait for that bar to fill up in your brain and hope the monster doesn't kill you. It's horrible.

Maybe a year later I stumbled upon the sleep paralysis wikipedia page by complete chance and went "ooooooh that's what it was !" I told my doctor about it and he told me it was fairly common, and that sleep deprivation and stress probably caused it in my case.

@contrarygravitas: @ultimaxe: well far as the public knows, it wasn't assholes (plural),

it was one prick last year who directly attacked him on twitter about it,

and the internet delivered some real raw righteous fury, some folks almost did the whole internet detective thing on the dumbshits ass.

he apologized directly numerous times afterwards.

Thanks for doing these videos, Patrick! Hopefully they continue once you are all set up in Chicago. Good luck with the move!

The discussion and problems of game preservation really bum me out as well, Patrick, it's not just you. This is why the all-digital future scares me! I still buy physical copies of games whenever possible about 99% of the time. Picking up Animal Crossing this morning off the eShop is one of my very few exceptions :P
