Isn't the GB community pretty often really negative? Nothing seems any different than ever before.

Anyway, personally speaking, I find it hard not to be really cynical in response to this video. I have a really visceral hatred for all of these canned advertising videos such as this. "So, the Xbox 360 controller was the best of all-time; you guys just must have put in a lot of work to improve on this. Now I'm going to ask you a lot of questions I already know the answers to in as rigid a manner as possible; please answer them as we have practiced."

Regardless of who is doing it, it makes me feel icky. I feel like here in 2013 we should be way beyond that sort of half-hearted, infomercial-style way of conveying information. They occasionally give some interesting details, but it's all done so insincerely that cynicism seems like the only way to react.

Lately it seems there's been more negativity, but GB comments have usually been pretty positive compared to just about every other site I visit.

To be fair, there's a difference between negativity and criticism, and I think the GB crowd are very good at voicing why they have the opinions they do. I don't feel that there's a great deal of mudslinging for the sake of mudslinging.

There's always the odd exception, of course, but that's the case anywhere. There's just a lot of news to be critical of, at the moment.

While usually that is true, I have to agree that whenever it comes to the XBO news you have a bunch of derogatory remarks and people telling you how it's all bullshit and it all sucks. It's a little sad because it is slowly coming to GameTrailers level of video commentary - and that is pretty damn low.

@humanity: I've never seen such a ham-fisted build up to the launch of a console in my many years of following the industry. Microsoft have made a lot of colossal mistakes so far, and let a lot of their supporters down in a big way. Frankly I think their pre-launch campaigning so far (along with their constant flip-flopping) is 'bullshit,' and that most of it does 'suck.'

I like to keep it to myself personally for the most part (save for some reasonable criticism), but I can hardly blame the gaming public at large for simply calling a spade a spade, and saying what they see, so bluntly and unapologetically.

@tehpickle: The build up was pretty standard and the reveals were pretty standard as well. It's how they went back and forth on a lot of issues afterwards that was pretty confusing and a mess. They are now turning around and doing a lot of things for the consumer based on feedback which is pretty commendable considering most companies of their size don't bend that easily. So while post launch was a mess, they are now fixing a lot of issues that people had with the original plan and people are still giving them shit for it which just looks childish.

So to be blunt myself and call a spade a spade - the community has been fucking awful. The most childish and inane console war slogans have been dredged up all the way back from the 2000's and it paints gamers not as savvy consumers that want to fight for their rights but whiny, delusional children that are never happy with anything. Likewise I try to keep that sort of stuff to myself as I don't want to get into huge internet arguments at every step but reading the comments on any Microsoft video is often times cringeworthy - something that I'm not used to when browsing GB.

I think this is gonna be a great controller... but I think I'm gonna hate the new bumper design as someone who thought that was absolutely perfect on Xbox 360. The travel time looks too long and they look more squishy than clicky.

My gut tells me if they just bolted on the major improvements (impulse triggers, covered screw holes, flush battery, new d-pad) onto a 360 controller we'd probably have something much closer to perfection.

@humanity: Hell hath no fury like a fanboy scorned, I guess... Really though, it's just the internet being the internet. No website is immune to it, not even GB, sadly. I'm not trying to excuse the behaviour of some folks per-se, just that I can understand it on some sort of level.

I don't believe that anything that Microsoft have done so far is 'standard' for a pre-launch build up, personally. Microsoft have acted in an incredibly, incredibly polarising manner with ONE, and it doesn't surprise me in the slightest that hardcore gamers have reacted with such vitriol.

But a gamer with a chip on his/her shoulder and a grudge to bear is the absolute worst.

@bill_rizer: Not sure if it's all Sony cronies, or simply irrational cynics infesting any remotely positive or insightful news post to unilaterally dump on a company without any acknowledgement of the actual content for what it is.

But thank you for sharing that GIF, I haven't seen one that sums it up so concisely or is more character appropriate. Just, yeah. So good.

That guy got me more excited than any of the other corporate folks at MS have yet. It's sad that there must be hundreds of people just like him, enthusiastic and brilliant, and their potentially cool product gets fucked over by archaic corporate attitudes.

Maybe he'll get his due when MS makes heaps of dough from PC players buying new controllers :)

They should just dump all their PR and marketing guys in the toilet and do a crazy "The Engineers of XBox One" campaign.

They already had a round table with the engineers talking about the Xbox One after the E3 Press Conference.

transparent aluminium - does Microsoft think we're dumb or are they living on Planet Star Trek with an intention to save the whales?

I assume they think we're dumb.

I also assume this is based on thorough video game community research.

I just so you know. transparent aluminium is a real thing.

It's always hilarious hearing hardware engineers talk about ergonomics because they sound CRAZY. Or rather there's no way I can appreciate the excruciatingly and painstakingly detailed work that they do.

"We did hundreds of models and came up with some buttons that are a tiny bit different than they were before" "Umm thanks, i guess"

Now hearing them talk about the innards though. That's cool.

I don't get all these people hating on MS for doing something cool like this. Last time I checked the controller was a massively important part of gaming. That guy Zofi was insanely informative and the new features are all amazing. I really can't wait for the controller recognition, trigger rumble, new sticks, new dpad, new shape, and no screws. If there is one thing I hate it's hours of finger dirt getting in the screw sockets.

But yeah, Major Nelson is sometimes way too overzealous. The way he repeats things is kind of annoying, but it's all for business reasons. Zofi was really cool.

Is it bad that I'm finding these Microsoft videos more amusing than informative? They remind of of people of people desperately hocking their wares.

Having played with the new controller, it takes some getting used to but it's still pretty good.

It would seem to me that the only people watching a seven minute video about a game controller would know who Larry is. Why do they need to conduct this video as if he doesn't know what he's talking about. "I hear the new the controller ..."
