@wintersnowblind: I'm tired of the Eurocentric nature of the series. Japan would've indeed been a great setting. Also, nah dude the American revolution was way cooler than the French one.

I really have no idea what that means.

That means it's coming out on PS2, Xbox and Gamecube.

If by 18th century Paris, you mean mid 21st century Paris, and you play as JC Denton.

How are you guys confused by "current gen"? The current gen is the Xbox One and the PS4. Last gen is...the last gen. We're not gonna do this bullshit dance of calling it "next gen" for three or four years into the generation again.

PR people certainly are. They'll call it next gen until the actual next gen consoles are announced.

When you say "current-gen systems". What exactly do you mean?

PS4 and Xbox One. You know, current-gen.

And PC. Which will probably look the best.

Assassin's Creed is like Mario but with more jumping and less fun.

Pretty sure that was the box quote for the first two games.

Sooo.. they didn't spend any time on it? Great, can't wait. Although 18th century France does sound appealing, with all the beheadings and whatnot...

"New" consoles and PC. This is one of the first times I've heard someone refer to the Xbox One and PS4 as "current-gen" in an official statement, so it sounds weird at first. Come E3 though pretty much everyone will be saying it and it won't sound as weird.

I really hope the new consoles allow Ubi to take so many of the original AC premises that got turned into simplified, abstracted systems (like the way hiding in a crowd of hundreds got simplified to stand in designated four-man-groups for cover), and turn them into more fleshed out and realistic representations. If that crowd size is realistic, for example, then you can start to colour me excited.

I still think the AC franchise has one of the most bad-ass baseline premises for a video game going, so if they can work from that and create more dynamic and wide-ranging systems based around it, then I might start getting excited for AC again, the same way I was around the release of the first (and to a lesser degree the second) game.

They should've just ripped off Rose of Versailles and made another chick protagonist. Oscar was a total badass. Either that or make Rick James an assassin. Looks interesting though this is a setting everyone saw coming a mile away. I want to kill a man with a baguette.

Interesting, reminds me a little of the very first AC1 trailer.

RIGHT?? As probably the biggest AC1 lover and defender in the realm, I was really overwhelmed and pleased by this video especially when this appears

No Caption Provided

It just looks so AC1-y! Fancy architecture inside shitty peasant-ridden neighborhoods, that lovely smoke/steam spreading in the air in a dirty blue-lit environment, and something about the Notre Dame texture REALLY reminded me of Acre's church.

I'm not that hype, Assassin's Creed is just disappointing now (even though IV was fun), but hey if they implement some AC1 homages in the style or aesthetic, I'm gonna be so happy.

I was hoping for more information. It's unfortunate that my first thoughts were "Is this the bad one?" - so soon after ACIV came out and rekindled a lot of interests.

Well, ACIV was a lot of fun, even as a port from the previous consoles. Hopefully Ubi can deliver again, though I'm certainly not dying for another AC just yet.

@h0lgr: I mean, not necessarily. Ubisoft has a couple of teams working on Assassin's stuff at any one time. This was probably being developed at the same time as AC4. But other than that, I kinda agree with you; nothing about this really seems all that new or exciting.

A few things stood out at me:

- This is alpha build footage? huh...

- Ubisoft: Next Gen starts [Here]... Developed for current-gen systems... umm...

- Got to imagine that Unity has a double meaning here... maybe it'll have something to do with the state of the present day storyline with the First Civ stuff?

- It looks super generic, but I guess it would in an alpha state.

Black Flag was fun, but I wonder if I've got enough goodwill to take another AC game playthrough.

I don't see how this qualifies as a scenery change at all. Different era, sure, but it's still your standard pre-industrial revolution wood and stone architecture. The whole fucking point of Assassin's Creed to begin with was the idea that the game could be set anywhere in any time period. They could have done so much more with this series.

Im happy and surprised that a large majority of people area getting hyped for this rather than the usual "not another AC.." etc thing :)

Im always hyped for AC. Plus I loved the atmosphere of the first one too!

Saw the geometry and simple reflections, thought "Yeah this could work." Saw the textures, thought "Maybe unlikely at that good." Saw the depth of field and smoke overlays, "Not gonna happen".

Also Similar to AC IV It shows that it's better to wait for the review since broken games like AC III can ship, but don't necessarily mean the franchise is dead either.

I think I might skip this one for a while unless there really is nothing to play at release. Typically I let my wife get me whatever the new AC is for Christmas...hopefully I will still be enthralled with Destiny by the time this comes out.

Same. We need to drop 'generation' as a means of labeling specific consoles from our diction as a culture.

But the Wii U isn't based on last gen tech, it's just designed with low power consumption rather than performance in mind. Comparable 2005 hardware performance wise would use a lot of power and generate a lot of heat, in turn causing the loud fans that was an issue for many on the 360 and PS3. There's more to technological progression than raw power output, and focusing on energy efficiency makes sense considering the target demographic - they've built a machine using reliable components, that runs relatively silent and can probably take some of the mistreatment you can expect from kids. Too bad they just named the machine in a way that fails to convey that it is a new machine rather than a pricy add-on to that same crowd.

Same here. Maybe ubisoft has the same problem, cause this is pretty obviously not the final visual quality on "last gen".

@fisk0: It's not based on last-gen tech, but its "raw power output" isn't that much better than last-gen tech. They made some sacrifices so the gamepad idea would work. It's an interesting strategy, but when you're talking about games like this, games that need a lot of raw power output, Wii U gets left out.

Regardless, I'm tentatively excited for this game. I skipped Black Flag because ACIII was so bad it actually insulted me, and even though I know people say Black Flag was good, no really man it was, they've still strayed so far from the parts of the series I actually want to play (like, ya know, assassinating people) that I still had zero interest in it. This looks like maybe, just mayyyyybe, they're gonna get back to the core tenets of the franchise, and if nothing else, wow, that looks really nice. I'm ready for AC to set the bar for graphics again.
