Every single stage in the game has been completely redesigned. That means same world map, but all 86 or so stages are completely different, which includes castles and bosses. Amazing value from $20.

Imma Luigi!

Seriously though, I wish I could buy a Nintendo product again, but they just seem so irrelevant it isn't worth me considering spending money.

Would have been all over a Wii U on day one if NSMBU had online play, but Nintendo is still acting like it's the 1990s.

I think I'm having that moment with Nintendo that I had with Star Wars a few years back where I realised that I'm no longer the target audience.

Then again, maybe I'm just assuming this trailer is for 5 year olds and the truth is actually a lot more depressing.

Online play? What is this sorcery you are speaking of?

I feel like they are turning Luigi into Tails, a character far more powerful than the "actual" protagonist and yet infinitely less popular...
Also I want to hear Iwata say "Nabbit" over and over again

Nintendo's idea of innovation is.. "he jumps further!" I'll never understand how Nintendo fans don't get tired of paying for the same few games over and over again with only slight differences and a title change. It's not like these games at least have unique stories in each new version, there's no real story to speak of, just different levels and 1 or 2 minor mechanic changes. Yea, on their own the games are pretty decent in terms of gameplay and what not.. but it gets old after a while. Whatever floats your boat I guess. Nintendo will be dead as a console developer soon if 3rd party developers continue to ditch them and they keep releases the same tired stuff over and over again.

Can't tell if Nintendo is trying to be funny and self-aware in pointing out that the only differences between Luigi and Mario are slightly longer jumps and slides. I'm not sure if I care, either.

It's amazing to me that people are really getting apoplectic and angry about "LAZY FUCKING NINTENDO, SO TYPICAL" over a $20 standalone expansion pack that's almost as long as the entirety of New Super Mario Bros. U, but that's the Internet for you I guess.

The levels are all redesigned to be more challenging and use Luigi. For $20, it's actually pretty good value.

@triviaman09: well, from a gameplay perspective it's a difference, for people that enjoy the platform genre. They look at that and see what they'll be able to pull off.

@zmilla: Seems like they're relying on 3rd party for that (ex: Wonderful 101) IMO, as long as they can maintain a steady stream of exclusive 3rd party titles that are of that same level of quality, I'm ok with Nintendo doing stuff like Windwaker HD, mario, new zelda, Smash, etc...

I don't get the hate. Luigi is a tougher character to use on new tougher levels, and Nabbit is an easy mode character so that your kids can play along with you.

This game isn't for little kids - it's for everyone. Just like Little Big Planet or Viva Pinata.

I don't really get the love I'm seeing for this. Looking like the same game... same content even for the most part... being resold for 20 bucks. Maybe the value is in the "redesigned" levels.

All the levels are new and tend to be shorter and harder than in the original game.

Think of it as an expansion pack.

@darkest4: I know, right? It's a good thing Infinity Ward/Treyarch stopped after CoD 4, because people never would have put up with another six Call of Duty first person shooters over the next six years. Also, good on Bungie, Sony and Epic for only making one or two Halo, God of War and Gears games. People get so tired of the same old stuff over and over with just a few new guns/abilities/characters, they never would have bought any more of that crap. Even worse, imagine if a company like EA put out a new NFL/NCAA/PGA/MLB game every year. The horror...

Seriously, it's $20 for an entirely new Mario game themed around shorter, more difficult levels and a harder-to-control character (and character control is a rather large part of a platformer, all things considered). It's a pretty dang good value, in my opinion, especially if you enjoy challenging gameplay.

This really. I played some of it and the only difference is the new levels. That is the main attraction for the DLC.

For some reason, I'm way more ok with an expansion pack of challenging remix levels than I am with the basic game.

Hang on a second, am I going crazy or does it say "Available Only in 2013" at the end of the trailer? As in, "once the year of Luigi ends, we're locking these levels away in the Disney vault, so buy it while you can"?

Someone please tell me that (and how) I'm misinterpreting that, because this seems really stupid.

I think that refers to the boxed, disc based version they're releasing in July. They're treating that as a limited "special edition" thing, kind of like the Super Mario All-Stars and Metroid Prime Trilogy discs for the Wii.

I don't understand all of the negativity. People are acting like this is supposed to be a brand new game. It's just DLC guys, and damn good DLC at that. They've redesigned every level in the game for crying out loud.

Between the "what's different" messaging and the logo, I can't tell if they're being self aware and know how ridiculous and, quite frankly, pathetic this is, or if they're completely serious. Knowing Nintendo, it's probably the latter.

It is an odd choice, but ti does make the box copy something special.

The new/redesigned levels look nuts. I like it! I first thought that $20 would be too much, but if there are 80+ levels then it seems a fair deal.

@paul_tillich: If it makes you feel better, there are plenty of Nintendo fans complaining and criticizing the company's every move. Just have to look for the right forums!

I'm kind of surprised this analogy isn't being made more frequently, but yeah, totally. The idea of taking NSMB:U and making the levels more challenging and with different platforming physics is potentially cool, whether it's a "lazy cash in" or no.

Really Nintendo marketing people? "Further?" ... I would've expected better from you.

This kind of feels like Nintendo saying "Hey look this isn't just a re-hash of the 'New' franchise we swear".

? It's a trailer explaining the contents of this DLC pack its new features. That's all it does. It's an expansion pack for an existing game. What is the word "rehash" even doing here?

@ruken said:

So you didn't watch the video then? Or read the blurb in the wiki box right next to the comments? Both unmistakably say 80+ (82) completely new levels.

So... The answer is a bit more flexibility (e.g., character characteristics) and slightly different play style? Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
