War Has Apparently Changed

Activision and VICE have teamed up to remind you that war is all kinds of weird now. Maybe it always was. Anyway, this is supposed to set up the tone of the next Call of Duty game (as well as every other modern military shooter made over the last few years and Metal Gear and...).

Interviewing and positively(?) highlighting Blackwater members is a quick way to get me to preemptively hate the fuck out of your video game.

Well, I learned something important from this video. Activision has way too much fucking money, and they can't spend it fast enough.

(Also, the irony of a massive publisher that profits hugely off of jingoistic military shooters producing a documentary about the evils of corporate influence in war is fucking hard to escape.)

@disemboweler: If you honestly think that VICE is "practically the only place these days to get real news/documentaries" you should really reconsider what you perceive to be real news. A small part of me thinks you are trolling because VICE stories are full of shock value and hyperbole, which seems to be what you are going with in your comment.

If not though, I would recommend getting your news from multiple sources with opposing viewpoints. :D

@itwastuesday: Are you kidding? VICE is practically the only place these days to get real news/documentaries on a vast array of extremely important and interesting topics. Go back to watching your Fox news or reading the NYT you douche. And VICE = racist? REALLY? You either haven't watched much of their content at all, or you have no idea what the term means. I have a feeling it's a mixture of both, in your case.

I like the intimation that mercenaries are somehow a new thing - as if the existence of voluntary national standing armies isn't a relatively new thing.

I think it's more to do with mercenaries becoming a thing again, after not having seen widespread use for over a hundred years. Accountability is also a big issue.

Not widespread use? I think you need to brush up on some of your history there dude. PMCs have been around for a LOOOONG time and have been used in pretty much every conflict in the 20th and 21st century. This applies specifically to the Cold War and conflicts after it. Simply put, the military cannot run without private contractors in some form. Just because you don't see it on the news doesn't mean it wasn't happening. It wasn't until Kosovo and later Iraq that the whole PMC thing really became widespread public knowledge because of bad press during the war, but its been going on for a long time before that.

As far as accountability goes - they got their orders and rules of engagement from their respective governments that hold their contracts. The idea that they are a bunch of cowboys running around answering to nobody is falsehood perpetrated by the (misinformed) media and hollywood movies. Sure, there have been individuals that have done nasty stuff, but all-in-all the majority of your mainstream of your PMCs are legit - and doing exactly what they were contracted to do.

This, this, this. The idea that they answer to no one and just work for the highest bidder is completely absurd. They're contracted by Western governments, mainly the US. They're not working for African warlords. While there may be legitimate arguments against them, the hyperbole surrounding so-called PMCs is ridiculous.

War never changes, Jeff. Private armies have always been around. The only difference is, like with everything else these days, the information age has given it more light to the public eye.

What was once seen as conspiracy theories are now today's current realities.

i like vice. they piss annoying people off, their ratio of interesting or funny to don't care is really good, they're down to earth, and they often do some really good journalism (see their stuff on the ukraine, for instance). this is funny because it pisses off annoying people, so i'm fine with it

Cant we just go back to WW2 already? I haven't shot any Nazi's for at least 3 years and im getting withdrawal shakes.

How about WW1 for once? I want to hand-drop small bombs from a shaky plane made from drift-wood and mothers table cloth to dump it on some poor horses head. Gas-masks & trenches. The first tank. Think about it.

Yup, I really want to see some WW1 games.

Rise of Flight dawg. it's dope.

There have been quite a few fantastic WW1 flight sims, going back to Red Baron and Dawn Patrol. Very few FPS games though, and that's kinda the genre I want to take on the setting. Maybe a WW1 tank simulator could be something too.

It's pretty funny how VICE acts like mercenaries are a new concept. People have been paying people to kill other people for kind of a long time.

Seems like he doesn't actually understand what the video was about, or what mercenaries are.

This trailer should be flipped on itself when it asks "Who does war and why?" and the camera turned back at Activision. Call of Duty isn't a propanganda machine, but it sure help desensitize people to war and ultranationalism. Who goes to war? Not countries, not PMCs, but broken and brainwashed individuals called soldiers.

Yeah, sure that was pretty cut and paste from Metal Gear...then you watch what sort of game they made out of it...you see that Kevin Spacey trailer and you wonder how did they get that sort of insight and make GI Joe Rise of Cobra rip-off?

Activision you game looks like hot garbage. Ghosts was 10x the story this stuff is, and Ghost was stupid...what a damn waste.

Nope, but given the apparently institutional incompetence and corruption at G4S you might want to get that alarm checked by a reputable company!

Most Vice segments are better than this. Seems like the COD devs really wanted something 'shocking' to give their game a realistic vibe or something.

What..the.... VICE loses cred... CoD never needed any, cause people don't play those games for realism... It's got the strategic depth of a toilet. VICE is all about getting the story and whatnot.. It's like a match made in a business meeting between people who have no fucking idea what they're selling or to whom...

This has been the focal point of the Metal Gear series literally since the first Metal Gear in the 80s.

But this video is pretty gross. Like, a bunch of fear-mongering over the existence of PMCs, and then turning around and going "NEW CALL OF DUTY! FUCK YEAH BUY OUR SHIT! We're also totally profiteering off of war btw but sssshhhh". It's really disingenuous.

Maybe it's time to slow down the brand a bit if decade-old issues that have been explored by multiple (and more competent) sources are the most creative thing they can come up with for this series
