War Has Apparently Changed

Activision and VICE have teamed up to remind you that war is all kinds of weird now. Maybe it always was. Anyway, this is supposed to set up the tone of the next Call of Duty game (as well as every other modern military shooter made over the last few years and Metal Gear and...).

Anyone who says that PMCs fighting wars is immoral should seriously question why they believe that a government military going to war and killing the government's enemies is somehow better?

That's assuming those people actually believe that a national military going to war is somehow better.

It's like saying "anyone who thinks oranges are disgusting should seriously question why they think apples are superior."

Nicolo Machiavelli said it best in The Prince: a standing army is needed to defend one's kingdom, an army armed and accommodated by its ruler and so loyal to its ruler. Then, and only then, will a prince be safe from his enemies.

They say money is the root of all evil. Well, if you have enough of it, it can be the root of all peace.

(yes, I know the actual expression is "the love of money is the root of all evil", but it sounds better the other way)

Cute. But you're forgetting that every army in Machiavelli's time was supplemented with mercenaries. Armies have been bolstered by guns (or swords) for hire for millennia and even when they have actually been 100% recruited troops, they have still committed the same crimes against humanity that we see being committed by PMC troops in the media. War can and in most cases will drive a certain percentage of its combatants to do dreadful things to other human beings, regardless of who is getting a pay cheque.

Aw come on Vice.. i used to really like watching their stuff, but they've become a tad bit too sensationalist for my taste, this is yet another of these cases.

Can G4S actually be considered an PMC and not just mere rent-a-cops? Sure they are active in Israel, but most of their activity seems to be centered around cash handling. So the majority of those G4S people are probably not war hardened mercenaries with military backgrounds, but rather ex law enforcement and bouncer types.

Even with an budget of £284 million these guys failed to organize security for the Olympic Summer Games in London 2012, so i wouldn't hold my breath on these people taking over the world anytime soon..

i understand that under the UN law you can't have a "mercenary organiziton" so just re brand it as Private security services contractor , Academi = Black water current name. ITS Same fucking thing "Mercenary of the 21 centuary" i don't understand why the UN or most governments still go by it. But i probably already know the answer the Elites in charge don't want it to change, and some bodies friends in the big business of it all is making money so I don't know. its a little glume but that just how this fukced up world works. I just hope its not just bland ass guided rail shooter like most of there games, but i am probably wrong its going to be same garbage they keep putting out because people enjoy it and keep buy the same bland crap with tiny iterations .

God dame sorry for the rant i just had to get that off my chest.

As a piece of advertising, that was pretty solid. But I don't know about treating it as anything more than another embellishment piece from Vice. For example, G4S is the third largest company by number of employees. They aren't even top 100 when it comes to something like revenue. And many of those employees are guys sitting at the front desks of office buildings or watching CCTV monitors in museums. Hardly the types to stage a coup. You might actually remember them as the company that lost the London Olympic security contract because they couldn't get their shit together.

On top of that, most "private military contractors" aren't the soldier of fortune types (man, remember that game?). They're guys and gals driving supply trucks, running the commissary, constructing buildings, doing administration and logistics. Again, not the types to be parachuting onto the White House in our not too distant dystopian future.

I'm certainly interested in where Sledghammer is going to take the CoD franchise. But man, I've really tired of Vice.

This.
The whole "evil PMC solider without a country" bullshit is all hollywood. Sure, there have been individuals working for private companies that have done bad things, but the idea of a PMC taking things over and "working for the highest bidder" just doesn't happen in real life. First of all, the reputable companies (BlackWater back in the day, Triple Canopy, AMT, DynaCorp) wouldn't touch it because that would get them blacklisted by most governments out there and they would lose their contracts. As a rule PMCs are not allowed to be involved in open combat - most of those guys you saw running around Iraq and Afghanistan were on Personal Security Details (bodyguards, basically) for high-level government and military officials (because the military couldn't do their own Force Protection operations). Or they were, as you said, doing supply/logistics, admin, and training tasks to supplement the larger military force. Without contractors, the military simply wouldn't be able to function.

If you haven't, I suggest you watch the documentary "The Shadow Military" from the Military Channel. You can get it on Amazon instant video, and YouTube. I think it's like $1.99 for the episode.

Also, here is a video of Travis Haley (the sniper from the Najaf Blackwater video) talking about what happened that day. He's also featured on the Military Channel documentary I mentioned earlier.

This seems about right for Call of Duty. They are so behind the times that when they were showing Ghosts at the Xbox reveal thing, the lead animator were talking about the awesome new features like mantling and leaning... in 2013.

Maybe it's time to slow down the brand a bit if decade-old issues that have been explored by multiple (and more competent) sources are the most creative thing they can come up with for this series

This has been the focal point of the Metal Gear series literally since the first Metal Gear in the 80s.

But this video is pretty gross. Like, a bunch of fear-mongering over the existence of PMCs, and then turning around and going "NEW CALL OF DUTY! FUCK YEAH BUY OUR SHIT! We're also totally profiteering off of war btw but sssshhhh". It's really disingenuous.

I like the intimation that mercenaries are somehow a new thing - as if the existence of voluntary national standing armies isn't a relatively new thing.

I think it's more to do with mercenaries becoming a thing again, after not having seen widespread use for over a hundred years. Accountability is also a big issue.

What..the.... VICE loses cred... CoD never needed any, cause people don't play those games for realism... It's got the strategic depth of a toilet. VICE is all about getting the story and whatnot.. It's like a match made in a business meeting between people who have no fucking idea what they're selling or to whom...

Most Vice segments are better than this. Seems like the COD devs really wanted something 'shocking' to give their game a realistic vibe or something.

Yeah, sure that was pretty cut and paste from Metal Gear...then you watch what sort of game they made out of it...you see that Kevin Spacey trailer and you wonder how did they get that sort of insight and make GI Joe Rise of Cobra rip-off?

Activision you game looks like hot garbage. Ghosts was 10x the story this stuff is, and Ghost was stupid...what a damn waste.

This trailer should be flipped on itself when it asks "Who does war and why?" and the camera turned back at Activision. Call of Duty isn't a propanganda machine, but it sure help desensitize people to war and ultranationalism. Who goes to war? Not countries, not PMCs, but broken and brainwashed individuals called soldiers.

It's pretty funny how VICE acts like mercenaries are a new concept. People have been paying people to kill other people for kind of a long time.

Seems like he doesn't actually understand what the video was about, or what mercenaries are.

There have been quite a few fantastic WW1 flight sims, going back to Red Baron and Dawn Patrol. Very few FPS games though, and that's kinda the genre I want to take on the setting. Maybe a WW1 tank simulator could be something too.
