I have wanted a game where you can go from surface into space seamlessly for as long as I can remember.

Then you can just play Frontier or Pioneer. The future is 1994.

This trailer must've been good for 65daysofstatic. The album with this track was in stock on Amazon last week, but now it's not! (We Were Exploding Anyway - Debutante)

I'm not impressed because I doubt that their promise can be realized. Maybe in 10 years a game with fully unique planets and all that fun stuff will be a reality, but not now. Devices just aren't powerful enough.

I bet this game will disappoint a lot of people.

I think the reason we're getting this now, or at least the hope of it, is because devices are starting to get powerful enough, new console generation and super-duper-computers and all. Minecraft doesn't procedurally generate everything, just the world, but it does a pretty good and impressive job of that.

Also, this is sort of what you can use processing power for, just making computationaly intensive but clever algorhitms to make stuff act in cool ways, then throw them all together and see what happens. So yeah, that's cool.

P.S: This trailer introduced me to 65daysofstatic, which is so far a pretty cool experience.

Evochron Mercenary already did a lot of this, albeit not nearly as pretty and Star Citizen is going to essentially be this but way way way prettier and much more expansive. However if this comes out before 2015 I'll definitely invest my time and money into it before SC is released and I forget what basic hygiene is.

well, evochron has seamless landing alright, but the planets are barren wastelands with nothing going on.. this seems 1000000000000000000000000000 times better

This looks impressive, but only because I know things are being procedurally generated. If I didn't know that, or if that wasn't the case, this doesn't look as good as the hype around it says it is. It's similar to Knack. If you know what is actually going on in the game to generate its visuals, you might consider it impressive. Most people don't know, or ignore that, so the game ends up looking generic to them.

I feel like 'procedural' isnt a positive thing... when I'm playing a game and some section of it offers me procedurally generated content, I usually don't spend much time there because it gets repetitive so fast.

This trailer is far too far-reaching. A game like this seems like it would never ship.

Also, it's a little less important that you hammer me with technology ("procedurally generated") than a developer might think. Concentrate on what it means to the consumer. Tell me about how it means endless replayability and less about how you go about doing that.

Anyway, this could be cool, but we're a long way from what is in this trailer meaning anything.

If X: Rebirth has taught me anything, it's to wait for the final product when you see insanely ambitious looking trailers - especially ones that deal with endlessly explorable space. And ESPECIALLY when said game is being made by a tiny developer with a small team.

I'm hoping for the best, but preparing for less than that.

Righteous.

This thing looks like it could be the game I've always wanted. I remember thinking as a kid how amazing it would be to be able to travel to different planets with my own space ship. This game embodies exactly that. It's a mature scifi Minecraft. I just hope the gameplay on top of the exploration is as fulfilling as it is to me in Minecraft.

Did they visit Arrakis in that video? Hmm...interesting...

The premise and the video still haven't necessarily sold me yet. I'd like to hear what Jeff and Brad find so impressive on this week's Bombcast.

I think it looks cool but this another one of those, full of promise but nothing concrete yet videos. It says real time but the movements didn't look like it was being controlled with a mouse and keyboard or controller. Also, while it looks pretty, the idea of going from water to land to air to space seems really neat, what is the gameplay? Will it be fun? We didn't see any of that so people getting hyped for graphics I guess.

How many times can you see randomized elements before you start seeing familiar combinations, also it remains to be seen if a game aiming to be so procedural can have effective gameplay.

I bet the makers of Titanfall are testing their maps till they are as good as they can make them, randomly generating an area is fun till you try to have fun in it.

Unless they get picked up by a larger developer/publisher of course.

Well, damn. This is the first time I can remember being really excited about a new game in a very long time. It's different enough to go right past my "oh it's this thing in this genre, so I have an idea what it is" reflex. Also, more sci-fi that isn't a shooter, rogue-like, or puzzle-platformer? Another plus for me.

Procedural generated EVERYTHING. AKA we don't have to spend any time designing interesting places for you to go when we can get by with throwing in a lot of 'unique' bland generated content.

That is probably more of the cynic in me than anything but this type of level design rarely works out...especially in a game that looks to have exploration be a pretty big part of it. I hope they prove me wrong as the rest of it looked really interesting but I am going to be a skeptic until I see just how interesting these generated worlds are or if they are as generic as I expected.

I have so many questions I need answered about this. How good is the combat? What do you actually play as? Do you gather resources and build stuff like Terraria and Minecraft, or do you just have a look around the places you go? Is there enough variation in the designs to be fun for a while? Will randomly generated planets be any fun to explore if it's just a bunch of similar hills instead of unique areas? I'm really interested! Never would have expected this from the Joe Danger guys, can't wait for more information.
