@gunstarhero: I always felt Under A Killing Moon was the best of those games, maybe even the best of the FMV era games period.

All those old Tex Murphy games were goofy and dumb, but boy you could tell they had a lot of heart put into them. I guess thats why I loved them so much. Cant wait for this

This seems incredibly authentic as an FMV game, the art direction, style and pacing all seem right on the money.

All doubt I had about this went away when I heard Tex talk and he sounded the exact same. He may look a lot older, but that's fine as long as he sounds the same as he did in the 90s. This will probably get me to finally finish Overseer which I never quite got into despite loving the hell out of UTKM and Pandora Directive.

@drzing: That 1.3 gigs is the current beta (Basically a short demo) available via GOG for the backers. I am curious, if you buy it via GOG do you get that demo for now? The game has had shittons of FMV recorded for it and it's in 2k resolution (just slightly more than 1080p really) so I'm really curious how huge this game is going to end up being. I wonder if the price is too low and will barely make up for all the bandwidth since I can't imagine it coming in less than 30gigs... Guess we'll see, very soon.

Holy fucking shit.

This is almost exactly what I would imagine an FMV game being created today would look like. It still captured the hokey nature of the era, but the video quality is actually decent now thanks to technology, plus completely unjustified puzzle mechanics, and copious amount of scenery-chewing overacting.

Move over Dan Teasdale - you aren't the only person keeping the FMV dream alive anymore.

Haha that looks fantastic!

Also, that lass at the 2:00 mark (blink and you'll miss her) looks the spitting image of Sharon from Eastenders. A reference lost on most of you, I'm sure, but still, I had to get it off my chest!

@drzing: Yeah, technically 2K is sliiiightly higher than regular 1080p, but whatever. I think the main thing is that it's usually used to determine the original resolution of the source image, not the display resolution. It's why Criterion blu-rays will tout their new 2K masters and such.

And 15GB still seems like it's not high enough for a significant amount of video. Here's hoping it isn't hella short.

I kickstarted this fucker cause I believe in FMV games, and I am PSYCHED.

@drzing: You know 2k is really just 1080p, right? It's horizontal resolution, not vertical. 4K is the same way.

Oops, yeah you're right. I fell for this misleading headline! http://www.dsogaming.com/news/tex-murphy-tesla-effect-abandons-1080p-in-favour-of-2k-packs-12tb-of-video-data/

Using the "official" 2K would be 2048x1080 17:9, instead of 16:9? There's no way this deserved any headlines, but whatever, they probably did a good job trolling everyone with it actually.

If you look at the bottom of the product page you'll see that 15 GB of hard disk space is needed. Which probably sounds more like what you're expecting ;P

I'm glad I pre-ordered this game. Too bad I already own all the previous ones (you get to download one for free when you pre-order). I've played through all of them in the nineties (though I never finished Mean Streets) and I still want to replay them. That's probably not going to happen between now and the 22nd.

15GB, that sounds better. Now if I were them I'd have also offered as a special Kickstarter reward, an enhanced build of the game using less-compressed video and requiring a bunch of Blu-rays you have to swap frequently. This easily generates another great press release! "20 years ago you couldn't believe a game needed 7 CDs. Coming in 2014, spread over 8 massive 50GB discs, Tex Murphy is by far the largest video game ever created, featuring an unparalleled 7% more pixels than 1080p video. Next-gen? Fuck 'em, welcome to the Tex-gen." <cue epic music>

GOG lists the size of the game as 1.3GB, which is surely a typo. I want to see untold gigabytes of ridiculously wasteful FMV which they certainly seem to be delivering (2K-resolution FMV? Hell yeah, crank that shit up to 11 guys!). I would also like to see a cameo by say, a naked Roberta Williams in a hot tub, maybe getting her head split open by a demon in a drug-induced hallucination while Tex gets attacked by evil German werewolves... Long live FMV!

@hyst: Ahh, the good old days. :) I was such a fanatic for high-quality MIDI in the mid-late 90s. It's a shame most people never heard old game soundtracks the way they were intended. For anyone into this stuff, be sure to check out http://www.queststudios.com

I just rediscovered this amazing site containing meticulously organized soundtracks of old Sierra games. Both the original MIDI as well as digital recordings. This site has been around for ages, very cool to see it still running, and props to Sierra or whomever owns the rights now, for allowing these recordings to be available. The site's also full of interesting MIDI and sound card history. My favorite piece of audio hardware will always be the $200 Yamaha SW60XG that took me weeks to save up for in high school. Good times. :)

For all you folks who have never played a Tex Murphy game, these games rock. Seriously. I started on Under a Killing Moon when it was released. I loved it so much that I probably replayed it 4 or 5 times over the years. I then played all the ones after it when they released.

If you've never played one, it can be difficult to understand why there is any allure to this, especially in light of modern games. Basically its all about making your way through a world filled with cheesy, but lovable characters. Sometimes the acting is great, sometimes its laugh-out-loud bad. Along the way you adventure through the world, solving puzzles, picking up clues (he's a detective after all) and watching it all unfold both in-game and via fmv. Its a casual experience, but an interactive one. I think these Tex Murphy games probably made the best of the "interactive movie" craze that swept the PC (and 3D0?) scene back in the day.

Hopefully the GB crew give it a crack, because I think it would be stupid fun for some of team.

@crippl3 Yep Gabriel Knight 2, a 6-disc Sierra FMV game that came out a year after Phantasmagoria. I really liked it and thought it looked more polished than Phantas, but it had it's bad points too... poor casting, ridiculous impossible puzzles, instant-death maze sequences, in other words right at home with every other FMV game!

I remember my brother and I got Under a Killing Moon for Christmas in 1994. I think it was the first game that I had seen on multiple CDs so it kinda blew my mind (I don't count 7th Guest although it had a killer soundtrack on disc 2). UAKM's cheesy MIDI music was hot shit on my new Gravis Ultrasound too, those were the days... These games are so campy and Chris Jones is such a dork next to all the other washed-up old actors, but I can't wait to play the new one.
