@astonish:  Amen. Everyone should be cherishing guys like Ken Levine and companies like Irrational. Anyone cynically bashing this game, especially at this stage and after this interview, are either trolling or mentally challenged in some way.

Great to hear they're keeping to a similar tone - hearing The Shining and Blue Velvet as some sources of inspiration was great.

Great interview Jeff, thanks.

I don't understand this. This looks as promising as the first if not more and is tons more different than Bioshock 1 or 2 and (in my opinion) is more of  an appropriate successor to the Bioshock games than Bioshock 2 was. Bioshock 2 was the game that was made to please the "bosses", this game was a project that they felt more passionate about like they did the first one. He says it right in the interview.

welcome to the world of western game design: iterate on a concept until its become routine.  its unfair to say irrational is the only developer that does this.  they're just one of many. "
I don't want to start an East versus West argument, but if anything, I'd imagine the western developers being the ones who seek out innovation the most - you just need to look past big franchises such as Halo and Call of Duty.  And I hardly think anyone can call what we've seen from Bioshock Infinite 'routine'. Sure, it seems to retain much of the core conceptual feel of the original, but I share Jeff's prudent enthusiasm. This is shaping up to be something to keep an eye on. "
quite assumptive to think i'm only considering franchises like Halo and Call of Duty in my assement of western game design.  i could point to a dozen different studios and franchises that are built upon the (re)iteration of  a basic set of ideas, oftentimes with games from completely different studios being almost the same concept just with different window dressing.  i didn't say i wasn't excited for infinite, nor do i consider it to be locked into any kind of "bioshock" formula; despite its similarities.  my original point is that its silly to say irrational is guilty of re-iterating on an idea when there are plenty of better and more obvious examples. "
Oh, I didn't mean to sound assumptive at all. That 'you need to look past...' bit was meant as rhetoric and only rhetoric, with Halo and CoD being quick and easy examples.

I actually agree with you for the most part - the gaming industry (be it western or eastern) seems very much focused on reiteration. And yes, that can lead to very disappointing, lackluster or downright bad games. But the way I see it, some developers - in this case, Irrational Games - attempt to refine and improve a concept, rather than xerox it. And I think you need to give them at least some credit for that. Hence why I can't see Bioshock Infinite as something that you can call 'routine'. Then again, I'm an optimist. :)

I'm honestly not trying to flame you, or anything (I like to think the GB community is too mature for e-fighting) - but you keep referring to 'western' developers, while I actually see the Japanese market as much more rigid and 'set in their ways', so to speak (I'm thinking of JRPG's, primarily).

You have no idea what the hell you're talking about. First, you say it's "BioShock 2.5" and then you say they're just slapping the BioShock name on it. You're just throwing blanket criticisms at the game with no regard for any kind of sense. Sequels are what keeps this industry alive so get used to them. Not to mention that as far as sequels go, BioShock Infinite looks to be one of the more original sequels in a long time.

I'm so excited for this game. Ken Levine is awesome. Bioshock was one of the best 60 bucks I ever spent. I'd much rather have an absolutely amazing experience than a game that just gets all the bullet points. I'm glad it seems like he respects us enough to give us something that will really make our money feel well spent once again.

You are right I have no idea what I am talking about...I bought Bioshock 1 and 2 , but am totally devoid of any kind of opinion on the matter whatsoever..I dont want to start a opinion war with you, cause hell we would both look like fools. I also do not want to assume you are much younger then me.But the reason I commented that I hate sequels, if you care to know is because it use to not be the trend with every game back in the day, it was always a new title coming out with fresh and "new" gameplay..But this current generation has spawned the "sequel" trend and it is getting old fast. And I personally think Bioshock 2 was not worth the money i paid for it. I do not think sequels keep the industry alive, if that is the case we would not have BIOSHOCK. Sequels are simply a developer riding the hype, so to speak, instead of giving us something new...What I will give credit to Levine for doing is realizing this and it appears he is trying to make a new IP with the same name, which is kinda sad, but if this is how he has to get it approved, then so be it.  We have to remember that even Bungie got tired of making Halo games and left the Microsoft because of it... I just hope that people give up on Call of Duty and Halo and dont buy L4D2 or Crackdown 2...And please! Why you are at it stop buying avatar clothes...

Ken knows what he's doing, his back catalogue is a testament to that. Great games take time. I'm glad some publishers recognise that and gems like BioShock are made with that mentality. Looking forward to seeing more on this.

Yep.  I love hearing Ken Levine talk.  He's a thinker and I think he has a lot of things worth saying.  Was really interesting to hear some of the process going on behind the scenes in creating this game and the things the team have grappled with.

I was kinda meh about the game, since I didn't bother to play any of the two previous ones. Then i saw the very last 20 seconds of this video with the monster landing on the roof. Fuck yeah, this looks awesome. It's like when you see the huuuuge dragon at the end of the Guild Wars 2 video. You just know you gotta have it.

The guy on the right of Ken Levine is Chris Remo, formerly of Gamasutra now a community manager at Irrational. Honestly the questions were directed at Levine, so Remo really didn't have much to add. I assume a couple key folks from Irrational were in that room for the demo and then they remained there for the post demo interview.
