terrible wordplay is terrible!

Decent, I guess. Not a fan of HoN.

Also, T-minus 10 posts to LoL and HoN slapfights.

Lame, who cares it just trying to be LoL

Posted by NoXious

Still can't get over the fact that you have to pay for this. I think it's a great DotA client but League of Legends is too.
That manages to be free! What's up?

Posted by test0r

HoN is great if you want more DotA, though personally I played enough DotA to last me a lifetime for free with WC3.

Posted by gosukiller

Never really gave HoN a fair shot. Went from DotA straight to LoL.
Might try this now though.

you realize that HoN was out before LoL was ever anounced right...

I am excited for this patch.  Team Matchmaking has taken you forever, S2.

Yeah... after the 400 hour I started getting head-aches while playing this game. High level matches can be very demanding. I haven't played this game since the beta :) but I'm glad they are adding all this things :)

Posted by Cwaff

I really enjoyed my time with LoL, might be worth picking up HoN and having a look.

LoL FTW!

I just hope they have a sale soon, I want to play this game.

@Llama:
Wait What? that doesn't even make any sense.
LoL

HoN
Announced: ???
Closed Beta: April 24 '09
Release Date: May 12 '10

And Yes, HoN is trying to adapt itself to the same model LoL is using while trying to cater to a more casual crowd. Probably because they made all the money they could with the current model and it would seem that their sales peaked at launch and they're trying to find new ways to keep the money coming in.

HoN is a glorious awesome game, but, it lacks innovation. It is more or less DOTA. Whereas LoL got a ton of new and fresh ideas that make the game more complex and customizable. On the other hand, LoL looks like total shit ;)

Posted by arca

Heroes of Newerth is the closest clone to Defence of the ancients that I have played which is why I liked it. League of Legends on the other hand tries something different which is fun and interesting  but it just wasn't for me.

Not a fan of the LoL pricing model either, hoping HoN doesn't go down that path too far.

leeroy jenkins has become a verb... "leeroy jenkinsing in"

Pitty S2 sold distribution rights in South East Asia (And I think the Pacific too) to Garena. What a disappointing decision; else I'll be all up on HoN.

Can't wait to pop some cherries, oh wait, I'd just get my ass kicked instead. :(

Not many people realize this but HoN since the beginning was supposed to be a DOTA clone with the engine designed from the ground up for it and they totally did achieve that. This whole LoL vs. HoN thing is kinda pointless they both are going to die anyway when Valve comes out with DotA 2.

There's a difference. LoL requires you to pay money to unlock skins for characters (anywhere from $2-7 per skin) whereas HoN will let you buy any of the cosmetic changes for in-game coins. You say that HoN sales have peaked but every month the average number of players increases significantly.

Also the other significant difference is that when you buy HoN, you have all the tools to play at your best. All current and future heroes will be available from the start. There are no levels or runes to grind through to get your hero ready for competitive play. This also means you don't have to worry about spending days or weeks grinding up IP to buy runes to equip out the next hero you want to pick up for competitive play, while in HoN you can switch between playing carry, support, tank, initiator, etc. without having to touch the runes or summoner spells or anything like that.

Yes, theoretically you can grind up enough runes to play every hero effectively but that is a lot of games played with either potentially sub-optimal rune setup or just a hero you don't necessarily want to play for 100+ games.

Yay s2 games! I live in kalamazoo, MI, and I pass by their development studio every day :)

HoN was a fun game, I hope the matchmaking works well enough for it to reinvigorate my interest in it.

Edited by Cyborgmatt

Free DOTA game > paid DOTA game tbh.

Posted by Zeninnnnnnnn

I like League of Legends better. Because, you know, innovation.

Posted by Fuga

HoN is a great game.

Why is no one discussing Brad getting his cherry popped on video?

Posted by LiquidPrince

Does this run on the same engine as Starcraft?

Edited by MAST
@Eej: Lol, for some reason your description just made me think HoN is Counter-Strike, and LoL is Modern Warfare. One has unlocks, and progression (LoL). The other does not (HoN). I dunno if you know this, but a shit ton of people like progression, and unlocks.

Also, your complaint about skins is kinda amusing, since that's literally the ONLY thing that requires money in LoL. HoN was what? 30-40 bucks to buy right off the bat? I've never payed a penny for LoL, and I have almost everything unlocked. In addition, you don't have to buy the skins put out by Riot in order to have new, awesome skins for your champions. Go to leaguecraft.com and check out all the awesome, customs skins you can have for each champion. They are just as good, sometimes better, than the skins Riot officially puts out for cash.

LoL is actually made, patched, and regularly supported by people that actually made DoTA. They know what's up more than anyone else does, yet they also aren't afraid to innovate, and add to the original DoTA model. That's why LoL is better than any other DoTA-like games. Hands down...

Truth my friend.

I could never get into DOTA for the same reason I have a hard time with HON... Denying. This one tactic, dramatically decreases the amount of fun a newcomer can have with the game.

This is also why I enjoy LOL so much, they keep your attention on the action.

It is good to see HON trying to seperate themselves from the basic DOTA formula a bit more. I am really curious to see how close DOTA 2 will be to the original mod, and if it is, will it be as successful as LOL.

Posted by Deathpooky

Last hitting / denying always seemed weird to me.  Looks like they're somewhat trying to deal with that, but I imagine they can't do too much without pissing off the rabid DotA'ers.

Also, that "Flamboyant Pack".  Um.  Yeah.  What are they, 12?

I realize that, I dont think DOTA 2 will be the end of anything but maybe HoN though. LoL is as different from DOTA as Demigod was, the concept is very different. No denies, mastery/skilltrees, summoner skill, boostable skills from items and so on.

Anyway, both are great games. More MOBAs for all of us :)

I play both LoL and HoN and I have to say.... they are very, very different games.

I was not expecting this to be a video feature from reading the title.
there need to be a Giantbomb own video section on the front page !!!

Lame, who cares it just trying to be LoL

Posted by AddyMac

Good for them for making the skins and stuff essentially free, unlike Riot Games who charge through the nose.

Time to revisit HoN!

The announcer packs make me want to play this game.

Oh great.... Gay jokes.... It's almost 2011, and those are still viable?

Still, looks like great additions.

@Vade said:

Which is just trying to be DotA. And actually both projects originated pretty close to each other.

Casual mode sounds great. I don't have the attention span for normal games anymore and EM is just.... bad.

Edited by TFG

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOW Micro transaction. Already paid for the game, now you gotta pay more to get fun stuff. SWEET! THIS IS SO AWESOME.

I'm sure it will take a ton of games just to get one skin.

Posted by SunnyD

HoN community got to be the worst ever.

Posted by LordLOC
@LiquidPrince:  No of course it doesn't run on the same engine as Starcraft silly :)

It uses S2's own engine (the K2 engine) that they used for Savage 2. Same engine, just used differently for HoN here.

I'm actually happy they are introducing Casual mode. I never played Dota, and the last thing I need is to be chewed out and called uh, interesting names in HoN because I'm a newb and didn't lane properly or what have you. I hope they alsoimprove their tutorial a bit as well.

Posted by TheRedOne

Multi-player is all well and good, but I like to play my HoN solo.

Posted by Mageknight

I hope this gets more people interested in HoN. The Giantbomb chatroom has two people in it right now :(. If you're from Giant Bomb you should drop by! We won't bite!

Posted by WinkLynx

Watching this while in queue for a game of ranked LoL.  Looks pretty decent, competition can be a good thing after all.

Posted by CharlieTuna

Oh god, the flamboyant pack thing really is embarrassing. It's just childish and homophobic, however casual mode and the other stuff they are putting in could be cool eventually.
