Why Are Heroes And Villains Fighting In Injustice?

If it's not "The Rage," then it must be something else, right? This Injustice trailer shows off a bit of the setup for the fighting game's story mode.

Looks pretty interesting, but wonder if it'd work better as a comic story arc rather than a fighting game story.

Attention all comic book people: is there any precedent for the name "Injustice" in DC comics? I physically cannot understand why there's not identifying moniker or subtitle that clearly states this has the Supermans and the Batmans in it. I can't see Joe WalMart knowing that Injustice has superheroes in it.

They've started putting out a weekly mini-comic that explains the story leading up to the game. It's actually not bad. You should really read it to get the full impact of the story, but if you just want the details:

Issue #3 came out yesterday. So far, Lois Lane has become pregnant with Superman's son. Joker kills Jimmy Olsen and kidnaps Lois. Joker links Lois' heartbeat with a nuclear detonator and hides the nuke in Metropolis. Not knowing this, Superman attempts to save Lois, but Joker uses Scarecrow's fear toxin to trick Superman into killing Lois and the baby (he grabs what he thinks is Doomsday and carries it into space to get it away from Lois, not realizing he's carrying Lois herself). When Lois dies, the nuke goes off, obliterating Metropolis.

Okay really, for how fucking hard it is for WB to make a Justice League movie, Netherrealm is sure making it look pretty fucking easy.

If one were to assume that they'd put the best acted bits into their marketing I can't wait to hear the worst.

Still, I can't help but be excited to see how they follow-up the overflowing-with-content Mortal Kombat.

From quick search on ComicVine, a website about comic books. Apparently there was an Injustice League that fought the Justice League. But I somehow doubt Joe Q Public would make that connection.

@AckbarTheGreat: Yeah... They're taking down a dark road pretty damn quick. I guess if you want to sell the idea of Superman as a not-so-benevolent dictator, though, you've got to have one hell of a good reason that would happen.

@Coketruck: Yeah I decided to get the prelude comic as well because of how fucked I heard it was, and god damn, makes me kinda want to get Injustice just for the story, and it's a fighting game. (Albeit from the guys that gave us one of the best fighting game stories in awhile).

I'm gonna go ahead and assume the inevitable cover with Batman and Superman punching each other will subtly hint at it.

Anyway, nice trailer, even if it runs on the low poly models they have for non-fighters a bit too much. I like bad guy Supes more than bad guy Bats as a concept. It's the idea of Bats as the underdog, I guess. And the fact that everybody thinks Batman is the more conservative of the two because he's a rich kid.

I mean, Superman is the small town guy wrapped in a flag ranting about the "American Way". Batman is a city boy with money that shares his time between doing community work and having casual sex with models. If one of them is going to go fascist dictator, my money is on Superman for sure.

Okay, so using a dark alternate universe is such a great excuse for the scenario in a superhero fighting game, I'm really surprised nobody has done it before.

It's the perfect excuse for a game of mostly hero characters beating on each other. There's just evil versions of each character. That's pretty great.

This is kinda a loose reimagining of the ideas found in Kingdom Come.

But Injustice itself doesn't really mean anything in the DC universe... I mean there was an Injustice League, but that was just a bunch of villains trying to counter the JL. Not an ideology split like this is.

Their best bits definitely weren't in Mortal Kombat's marketing, so I'm assuming that may not be all that different here.

So Supes, WW, Lantern and a few others go all Justice Lords. Cool. Bats working with Harley is pretty interesting by itself, so at least for the moment, I'm in. Want to see where it goes. May be the first fighting game I pick straight up in a very, very long while.

Looks like Batman more-or-less converts them to his freedom fighters over the course of the story. Hal is wearing a Yellow Lantern ring, but then wearing a Green one when he's a good guy. Wonder Woman starting off with her armor on Superman's side, but then her regular outfit with Batman. Then it's pretty much everyone versus Superman, I'd imagine.

I bet all that stuff will be super fucking obvious, but I still can't wait to actually see it. I'm excited.

Yeah, Wonder Woman's line made me think that too... We'll see how it goes. Kingdom Come was a great story, if it's been adapted well, it could be a good plot line. I agree it's going to have some difficulty getting the Joe Q. Public dollar, but I think comic book & video game fans are largely who are going to pick this up anyway. The cover does seem to have Joker's smiling grin along with Batman about to stab Supes with a piece of kryptonite, btw.

@Shaanyboi: As much as I'd like to see a live action one, the animated movies are always fine for me. Batman:Under The Red Hood, Justice League:Crisis on two worlds and Superman VS The Elite are on Netflix on demand and are amazing. Batman:Year One is a better origin movie than Batman Begins, and Bryan Cranston as Jim Gordon, amazing.

Judging by the previews that have gone up on various sites today, it seems like the game's sticking to the most recent MK's style of story line transitioning to combat, but doing so even more seamlessly. I enjoyed MK's story so much more than I thought I would, so combine that with how the story's going in the prelude comic and I'm hyped.

The reason I liked MK9 story mode was because they embraced the cheesiness of the setting. Am I the only one that don't like the tone of this one? Like they are taking themselves too seriously.

If Cranston isn't Gordon in the next Batman once they reboot it, someone fucked up. DC's animated films are (for the most part) excellent.

Really dislike Batman's armor, the cowl looks dumb. Also the models look really primitive. I LOVE Batman but don't give a rat's ass about DC Universe (it's dumb and THEY KEEP REBOOTING IT!!), so I'll probably skip it.

I'm with you.

I'm not against using a grim tone with comic book stories, but it's become so prevalent that I'm getting pretty sick of it.

Still I'm much more turned off by the costume design than anything else. Other than the Flash and Wonder Woman everyone looks mad stupid in their armor costumes.

I'm still pretty stoked about the game, the combat looks good and the roster is pretty solid, if not surprising, right now. Hoping that they include some off-beat characters like Animal Man, Martian Manhunter, Adam Strange, and Constantine.

That's basically how I've felt for a long time, too. I like Batman, and that's pretty much it. And Batman is at his best when I can pretend the rest of the DC universe is separate. I've never liked anything that attempts to couch him in the rest of DC.

This game seems worth following, but I'm not sure how to feel about the Marvel Civil War overtones. I guess there's only so many ways to get superheroes to start fighting each other.

The best looking thing about this is that NetherRealm seems to be continuing to try to make fighting game stories that aren't just throwaway following the MK reboot.

@Shaanyboi: I don't know Justice Lords, but Kingdom Come is about Superman cracking down on non-hero metahumans. This is a government registration thing where loyalties get challenged. It's more like the backstory to Dark Knight Returns. Hopefully Green Arrow takes a shot at Superman and loses an arm.

Welcome to mainstream comics!

If something isn't being rebooted then a character is being killed, or given a new costume, or a new attitude, etc

Comics are constantly in flux and they're always trying to find the new thing that can replicate the comic book boom on the 90's. Change isn't necessarily a bad thing, and some of the New 52, Marvel Now, and post Crisis on Infinite Earths changes were great. Some not so much.

I used to strongly feel this way, but now it's more just become a case-by-case basis. With the right people and the right story, he can totally fit in and it can be surprisingly awesome. It doesn't always need to connect with that greater universe though.

Civil War is about super heroes losing the privilege of running around and creating their own justice like the wild west. They're forced to register who they are with the government so that they can be properly trained and managed and held accountable when they fuck up.

The DC spin on it asks what would happen if super heroes decided to band together, make their own laws to protect mankind, and basically rule over humans with an iron fist. Who would be able to stop them? That is the entire crux of the Justice League Unlimited cartoon's first season.
