Why Are Heroes And Villains Fighting In Injustice?

If it's not "The Rage," then it must be something else, right? This Injustice trailer shows off a bit of the setup for the fighting game's story mode.

They've started putting out a weekly mini-comic that explains the story leading up to the game. It's actually not bad. You should really read it to get the full impact of the story, but if you just want the details:

Issue #3 came out yesterday. So far, Lois Lane has become pregnant with Superman's son. Joker kills Jimmy Olsen and kidnaps Lois. Joker links Lois' heartbeat with a nuclear detonator and hides the nuke in Metropolis. Not knowing this, Superman attempts to save Lois, but Joker uses Scarecrow's fear toxin to trick Superman into killing Lois and the baby (he grabs what he thinks is Doomsday and carries it into space to get it away from Lois, not realizing he's carrying Lois herself). When Lois dies, the nuke goes off, obliterating Metropolis.

That's fucking insaaaaaaaaaane

Wowww... That's pretty dumb in a way that I can definitely get behind.

SOrry, batman was in that movie?  All I saw was The Joker, an entire movie of The Joker  :)

But I do wonder what their explaination is going to be for Superman not absolutely obliterating every opponent other than Batman or Luthor.  Kryptonite worms in everyone's skin?

Uncanny Valley like crazy in this game. Why haven't tried going in the style of those latest Naruto fighting games? Or just straight up comicbook style visuals. What they're doing now just isn't working IMO.

Man, I'm so into this. MK9 really took me by surprise, immediately becoming one of my favorite fighters and usurping my favorite fighting series (Tekken). Very excited to see how they apply their Story Mode stuf into a DC universe (not a cross one like MK VS DC).

My guess most people will think the back-story presented in the game is nonsense and will just make the funny spandex suited people fight...then sell the game back to EB Games for $15 a moth later.  THE END.

Nope. I'm a comic book guy and I thought this was a Mortal Kombat game with some guest DC heroes until like 3 months ago.

Under The Red Hood is some good shit, as is the animated Dark Knight Returns, Batman Year One, and Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker. If we're not just talking about Mask of the Phantasm.

Also, have a soft spot for the "Working Through Pain" short film in Batman Gotham Knight:

Yeah, I'm fucking baffled by the name choice. It would sell double if it had DC anywhere in the title.

I think we see why all fighting game stories are dumb. When you go to enough lengths to create a good story, then the fighting game ends up seeming like the ridiculous part again. Might play as a third person action game ala AA.

When it shows up in stores, the boxart should probably clue people in on it being a DC game. I wouldn't worry too much about it.

So you don't think the box cover that's filled with iconic characters will do the trick? How about all the advertisements? WB will put a decent amount of money behind it. You're sure to see TV commecials, and probably movie theater ads as well. There's no way the TV show Arrow won't have TV spots for it near it's release. DC comic fans will be well aware of it since there will be ads for it an all their comics. People going into stores aren't browsing games from a list of text, the box art is right there in front of them in any game section.

That's basically how I've felt for a long time, too. I like Batman, and that's pretty much it. And Batman is at his best when I can pretend the rest of the DC universe is separate. I've never liked anything that attempts to couch him in the rest of DC.

I used to strongly feel this way, but now it's more just become a case-by-case basis. With the right people and the right story, he can totally fit in and it can be surprisingly awesome. It doesn't always need to connect with that greater universe though.

I like Batman living, working and existing alongside the DC "god-like" characters. I like it, because he is still the more powerful character. The plain ol human could take down any of them if the situation called for it.

This looks...incredible! Like a combination of the Justice Lords storyline and Marvel's Civil War event. Also nice to see that Netherrealm will (apparently) continue the tradition of a free alternate costume for every character. Take notes, Capcom.

I had almost zero interest in this game, because it just looked like MK9 with DC characters and I thought I'd had my fill of that style of game for awhile, but after seeing this trailer I am ALL THE WAY on board. If it even approaches the length and scale of MK9's story, that'll be reason enough for me to buy it.

See, THAT is fucking lame to me. Him having a contingency plan for countering the rest of the Justice League, him being able to use strategy and his wits to hold his own in the fights they all get into, that's totally cool.

But this whole fucking overhyped self-felating internet culture bullshit that Batman is so invincible and can take down anyone because "He's the goddamn Batman" and "He always has a plan" is dumb as FUCK. Way to take the tension out of any and every story he has or ever will be in.

Yes, he's stubborn, borderline psychotic, and paranoid. If he is cornered, he'll put up the fight of his fucking life and be totally awesome doing it, but he can still fucking die.

I am a huge comic book fan and I was really on the fence about this game. But this is looking way different from what I was expecting and I am 100% on board with it now. I was afraid they were just going to make it, "All the Superheores are evil here!" This route looks way more interesting. I can't wait to get my hands on this.

Between the fantastic gameplay, great story, and tons of content Mortal Kombat 9 is my favorite fighting game this generation and what I compare every other fighting game to. I'm super excited for this, the DC Universe can be pretty awesome.

I'm not talking about some stupid internet meme and I never said "Batman can't die".

Batman is awesome because he's just as psychotic as the villains he fights. Because while the rest of the world says "Thank you Superman!", Batman says "I'm keeping an eye on this one". And because he can (and has) stood toe to toe with all the toughest the DC catalog has to offer. He's mistrustful and obsessive in ways that would make most conspiracy theorists say "damn man, take a chill pill". I like the character because he's so completely damaged.

Only in comics. :)

I'm gonna go ahead and assume the inevitable cover with Batman and Superman punching each other will subtly hint at it.

Anyway, nice trailer, even if it runs on the low poly models they have for non-fighters a bit too much. I like bad guy Supes more than bad guy Bats as a concept. It's the idea of Bats as the underdog, I guess. And the fact that everybody thinks Batman is the more conservative of the two because he's a rich kid.

I mean, Superman is the small town guy wrapped in a flag ranting about the "American Way". Batman is a city boy with money that shares his time between doing community work and having casual sex with models. If one of them is going to go fascist dictator, my money is on Superman for sure.

Really? My money would be on the guy whose whole schtick is criminals are a superstitious and cowardly lot. Controlling people through fear and intimidation is pretty much his thing. Dude was granted a Yellow Lantern Ring. Heck, the self control Superman needs just not to accidentally murder everyone kinda makes that whole scenario difficult to accept without a radical change in characterization.

Hey, don't go nerd quoting on me, there are also plenty of instances of Bats commenting how isolating Superman's position is and how he thinks he may snap if and when Lois is gone (I guess that doesn't apply anymore, but still).

Obviously I'm joking, but really, whenever somebody does "evil Justice League" as the point of their comic (and plenty have, both inside and outside DC), Superman is always the god-like tyrant that sees humans as insects. A bit more seriously, I do think Supes is the more conservative character, money notwithstanding.

A bit more seriously, I do think Supes is the more conservative character, money notwithstanding.

In terms of charisma, personal connections, and raw power, Superman is the most obvious hero capable of taking over the world either peaceably or through force. Batman's got the first two, but not the last and works better as an underdog anyways. That said, I think Kingdom Come had the right of it, given half a chance, Batman would turn all of Gotham into a prison, regardless of his personal convictions, which I'm not entirely convinced goes one way or another. He might be a city boy, but he's also a product of old money, not just being rich, but basically American aristocracy, and whether it's relevant or not, the playboy act is generally shown to be just that, an act.

That, and the easiest shorthand in the comic world to show how dysfunctional a setting is, is for Superman or a convenient expy to be a badguy. Batman going just a little farther than he normally does isn't going to carry as much weight.
