Witness the Return of Max Payne

As a fan of the series and a fan of knowing what the fuck is going on in the story, this seems like it could be a super awesome 3rd Max Payne game... what's that? I'm not allowed to think that?.. why? Oh because he shaved his hair? you're right, the game is gonna suck because he shaved his hair off.. Sorry, my bad... fucking idiots -.-

As for the trailer...don't know. Looks like a decent, mindless action game, but didn't really snatch my interest in any way. I can only hope that the final thing will be good.

Hearing the music and the old voice actor was enough to sell me on this. I'd love it if they incorporated the comic-book scenes in some way but the atmosphere is what made those games for me before. I'm officially really excited for this!

I'm.... not sure about this one. I'll keep an eye on it though.

Looks wrong to me... the setting is not Max Payne at all and it looks sooooo muddy. Also despite getting the right voice it just doesn't sound like Max dialogue wise. Not to mention the action looks pretty standard.

We shall see though, I really do have an open mind.

R* Games is on fire this gen, so I'm keeping my hopes up.

Wow. I'm surprised they got the theme in there as well. Reference to Mona Sax, and the same voice actor, awesome. I'm this won't be going for the same unique vibe the past two games had, but it's still great to see this and it makes me more excited.

So this is essentially GTA: MP? The tacked on theme doesn't convince otherwise.

I've been feeling pretty iffy about this game since the screens appeared a while back but this trailer all but nails it... this is _not_ Max Payne.

I finished watching the trailer, like I had finished watching trailers hundreds of times before. The familiar tones of the backing music had struck a note with me, like a pianist playing a piano, but this time the music was the one standing and taking a bow.

@DeF: It would be cool if they did put the comic-style back in there and who knows, maybe it is in there but they didn't show it in trailers or screenshots. Either way I don't think that it will ruin the game for me at all since, as you said yourself, the atmosphere is what makes those games good. I wonder what the first Max Payne would have been like if it had been made today. A lot of the more violent stuff would probably have been left out because of the media. Like, you know, the baby getting murdered and all along with your wife/the mother of your child. First the mother had to see the baby get murdered though... God I miss good games with a good story :(

Lots of comments about 'its not noir' - do you really think a lot of the levels wont be at night, in dirty, gritty gunbattles on the streets? and if youve played the previous payne games then you know the writing will likely be great and there may well be a twist that takes him back to new york! max payne forever!

I'll play it just because I loved the first two games but man, I'm not sold on the setting. I always thought the whole style, the mood, the story - basically the whole franchise had a very strong urban vibe. Taking that away looks so wrong.

So many haters, and non of us have played it yet. I for one think it's looking awesome, and the tone of the trailer seemed close to what we know and loved, though a bit Man-on-fire-esque (that being an awesome film, don't really see anything bad about that)

Don't be so quick to judge, jeez. For all we know the daytime footage might all be from the first level of the game and it all goes dark and gloomy afterwards. Remember MGS4? almost all footage of that was desert warfare, then that ended up being.. THE FIRST level. I might be wrong, and even then, haters wanna hate. If it was set in NY yet again people would complain rockstar wasn't being brave enough to move it forward and away from its comfort zone.

I'm psyked, rockstar has delivered for years so I trust them. They have grown allot as developers sins the original 2 mac paynes.

aww damn, dat theme song gave me the chills. It always has!

Looks promising. I just hope it's not an open-world game... Open world games tend to detract you from the main storyline and I liked the previous games mainly because of the story and his character.

I dunno, Rockstar never made shooting that great.

Want. They may be taking the series in a different direction, but from the look of things, it's definitely not going to be a bad game. If they can deliver that type of dramatic gang violence in the mature way as The Fall of Max Payne, it's going to be an enjoyable experience.

Also, if I wasn't on board with the bald look before... I watched Breaking Bad since then, and let's just say, there are those of us who would relish playing as a bald, slightly fat ex-cop who knows a thing or two about guns. ;)

Well, I guess if you want to do noir in South America, São Paulo is pretty much your only shot at that.

HOWEVER, living here my whole life, I've got say: Way too sunny, waaay too many trees (No beaches in sight, at least). Did Rockstar mix a few pictures of Rio by mistake.

Well, I'm probably gonna play it anyway, even if it doesn't have the vibe of the first two.

I thought the point at the end of Max Payne 2 was that he finally made peace with the death of his family and Mona? why is he still depressed? And Brazil may not be featured in many games but it really doesnt suit the tone of Max Payne.. Well none of that matters anyway i'll be playing Mass Effect 3 in march ;p

(and for some reason I dont see Max giving someone the fist-bump.. he's too self serious.. ;S)

Not exactly stoked about this. But I'm not in dismay either. If Deus Ex can come out and be amazing against all odds, than I think Max Payne has a chance.

Character model sucks, and if they get rid of the comic book panels I'll be so goddamn upset that it might sour me right outta of the gate.

So... wait... Cole with hair sucks and Max without hair sucks?

I'll check it out, but I'm not sure it will top the second one.

Remove the theme, the narration and the title and nobody would have ever guessed that this is Max Payne.

Could become a good game but never as godlike as MP1&2 with that scenario.

But with history of how iconic characters change overall due to something odd in the development process, they sort of have something legitimate to complain about. You can see that also with DmC but that case has gone unnecessarily outrageous. I am not minding it much and James McCaffery is voicing Max again so I am down.

Oh, don't get me wrong, I understand why people are complaining, I'm just saying that I don't hate the game like other people seem to because of these changes. As you said, with DmC, which is another change I'm not keen on. In fact, I hate it more than these changes. At least Max Payne changes are story related. The DmC stuff is just changing because the new creators want to.

I can't wait. I should probably go and play the previous two now. I will buy anything Rockstar makes.

Anyway, this looks nothing like Max Payne to me! But then again i mostly remember bullettime in a subway station, tiles and nightmares.

Here's the dirty little secret nobody wants to acknowledge.

Max Payne 1 and 2? They're pretty bad.

They're one note shooters with stories that don't know if they want to play it straight or for laughs, feel overwritten and awkward and just don't pay off.

They were also amazing games that debuted a number of things that would end up becoming shooter clichés, but the truth is they don't hold up at all. This? This looks... interesting.

The setting has changed, the story has changed, the character has fundamentally change, it's highly likely the gameplay mechanics have change. I see very little reason why the developers wouldn't want to start a brand new gaming franchise, except for the fact they can rope in all the old Max Payne players with the title

I understand everybody's anger at these changes. I'm just saying I'm not going to hate on the game because of them. Yes, there are many changes, whether it's for the better or not They bother me too, but it's not a huge deal to me anymore. Also, it's continuing the story of Max Payne. At least the changes are explained through the story and it's not just because they want to modernise it. So it makes sense for them to want to put the 'Max Payne' name on it. That's all I'm saying Dude...

This looks rad, and I appreciate the old throwback score from the previous games. Character looks more like the actual vocal actor rather than a farting sam lake and I also like that too.

If Batman shaved his head, dressed like Fred Durst and moved from Gotham to Acapulco, he wouldn't be Batman. The only resemblance this has with the original Max Payne is, well, the title. Sure, it may be a good game, but from what it's shown in the trailer, it looks more like Kane & Lynch than Max Payne. They could have called this Johnson Damage: Beard Cop and it would have the exact same effect.

Of course he wouldn't be Batman. He wouldn't be dressed up as a bat...Those changes are kind of a bad example because Batman is dressed up. Max is himself. Also, you can't see Batman's hair under the mask, so that wouldn't make a difference except for when he is Bruce Wayne. Anyways, I understand your anger. I'm not saying I'm a fan of these changes, I'm just saying that they don't bother me as much as other people! Like I said, I'd rather have the old setting, but these changes are not enough to make me hate the game. That's all I'm saying. I get why people are angry, but they make it seem like the world is about to end because he's shaved his head and it isn't set in a dark, snowy city...

speaking in movie terms: looks like an american production firm is remaking a world cinema classic. aka: i'm really, REALLY not excited...

Ohhh man hearing that Max Payne theme tune had me gripped from the start. Excellent trailer but I just dont know if this game is going to be a faithful continuation of the Max Payne character.

Either way this trailer got me excited about shooting dudes in bullet time again so JOB DONE! :)

Gotta love that god damn score. Brings back some memories.
