Wolfenstein: The New Order's Story Doesn't Seem Throwaway

This better be good.

I am interested in this, though ultimately it is going to be something that's only about the single player and I can't justify $60 for that.

I know it doesn't reflect well on me as a person, but I really hope I get to kill Hitler in this game. Like really shoot his face to pieces. Inglorious Basterds style.

This does look pretty awesome. Good to see the creatives behind two of my fave games, The Darkness and Riddick, getting to do more sophisticated single player experiences on this production value scale.

I mean, the game has looked great from day one, from both from a gameplay and story perspective. Anyone who has fond memories about the glory days of the big single player FPS should already be fully 'psyched' about this.

Then again, that's my personal bias talking. Yet to play a Wolfenstein I've not thoroughly enjoyed!

The trailer treatment of this game is great. Pretty pessimistic about the game though.

I'm a total sucker for alt-history stuff, so even if the gameplay is iffy I'm all over this.

I agree. I actually think that Bethesda, Zenimax whatever you call them have one of the best marketing departments around. they are really good a creating a tone for the world. I remember right before Fallout 3 came out, Games were just popping back on my radar after like 6-7 years. When I started seeing the FO3 marketing with the goofy ads from the weird retro future, I had no idea what it was, but it had me really interested in what that game was. Few months later I picked it up and was completely hooked on gaming again.

I also really liked the previous Wolfenstein trailer on the train, if the game holds the same tone as the trailers suggest, it could be pretty entertaining.

Expecting too much from a game story can be dangerous. Seriously, though, looks good from the trailer. I'm just worried about a more serious tone leading to even greater dissonance between story and gameplay. Seems to be a common theme in games today.

I really, really like the style of this.

I have a bad feeling that the songs in these trailers won't be in the actual game. "Nowhere to Run" is perfect for this.

You can't change the shooting part of a shooter. They seemed to have went to great lengths changing up and refining the wrapper around it though.

Of course, I agree. And that wrapper does get me interested. I just hope there is enough there -- either in the story or in the gameplay -- to fulfil the potential that is obviously present.

At first I thought they had misspelled "Juni" as Juni is Swedish for June (them being Swedish developers and all.). Then I checked and "Juni" and "August" is actually the German spelling. Nice touch.

I think if they did some sort of cross-over in terms of gameplay with a game like Dishonored albeit with an emphasis on combat rather than stealth that could be a good way to liven up the FPS genre. Gameplay where you're very much aware of your own body in first person, something that Starbreeze excels at, but it's a lot more dynamic in level traversal.

For me the worst part about shooters is that you're basically going down linear halfways mowing down grunts. It's Left-trigger-Right-trigger because all other controls are really secondary. If they can change that, add more dynamic movement, that could be cool.

Maybe someday. I do agree all the story tidbits have actually gotten my attention and now I'm actually curious to play the where, whereas a few months ago I also thought "well, just another shooter."

The story looks cool. Hopefully the gameplay holds up.

@humanity: I like the way you think. Yeah, the way Dishonored succeeded in embodying the player was one of the best achievements of that game. And yeah, developers of first (and maybe third) person shooters should definitely find a way to move away from the more or less lineair corridor structure.

At any rate, I hope this game will be at least competent.

played this at a expo, for better or wors this game kind of doesnt hold your hands at all like modern shooters where its very guided

Would you say it is more Metro 2033/Last Light less Call of Duty?

yea id say if between those games id say more Metro 2033,

like what i remember there's no glowing like indicators of where to go or what item to use in what area, more uses older sensibilities, (think like the campaigns of quake,)

and the game had a good difficulty to it, like the attendant that was watching me play said i was like one of the few people that was able to finish the level and beat the boss. like its definitely harder than a typical call of duty campaign.

Having played a little of this last year at EGX, it still has me interested. It does seem exceedingly loud and brash.

Lot of good voice acting in this trailer, but nothing that makes the story seem interesting. Still looking forward to this game tho. I've always been a fan of linear FPS campaigns.

@sammo21: Just out of curiosity, how much do you justify Mass Effect for? After all, the entirety of that game is single player. Plus, I think it's a bit early to designate this game as a single player only experience -- especially when previous Wolfenstein games have had multiplayer in the past, along with a single player campaign. If a developer were to make an FPS today, then it is all but certain it would include multiplayer of some sort; in the case of Titanfall, Respawn decided to focus solely on the multiplayer, giving only a little attention to the single player. So again, how much did you (if you did) pay for Mass Effect? A game, which in the case of the third entry, had multiplayer.

I'm sold. I'll be pre-ordering this game.

If this just ends up being the slick feeling shooty stuff from Rage mixed with some shlocky alt-history Nazi stuff then... i'm all about this. If wanting to shoot Nazi's is wrong then i don't want to be right.

The Neumond Recording site at the end is actually pretty fantastic, there's a bunch of fake 60s pop and rock they recorded just for the game. It's so weird to listen to.
