Wolfenstein: The New Order's Story Doesn't Seem Throwaway

Gotta admit, this trailer finally has me legitimately interested in seeing what this game's all about.

@crunchyflies: Well, each Mass Effect was around a 25-30 hour single player experience on its own and its possible the experience for players is even longer when you look at the single player DLC added. This game is probably going to be what...5-8 hours long? I also have 0 interest in another generic multiplayer shooter which this has more chances of being than not, if it even has multiplayer (which I'm sure it does since there is a "beta"). Mass Effect 3 was no different except the multiplayer was unique, the multiplayer was fun, and it was also a surprise hit with most people who played it. I put near 20 hours into the multiplayer with friends alone. I don't really think its fair to compare Mass Effect games to this as history shows us this game will more than likely only take 5 hours to see most of what the single player has to offer.

For some reason, I don't think this game is going to be a brief affair. Wolf's campaigns have historically been long. Even the last one, simply titled "Wolfenstein", was at least twice the length of your average contemporary shooter's campaign.

Great trailer. It is a shame the gameplay looked like a total and utter crap.

You mean the whole 4 seconds shown?

No, actually I meant the gameplay videos from QuakeCon last year. Also, couple of people I generally trust had some similar impressions after actually playing the game there. So lets just say I was not impressed with what I saw and read about the game. And it will take much more than a cinematic trailer with good music for me to jump on their hype train again.

I know it doesn't reflect well on me as a person, but I really hope I get to kill Hitler in this game. Like really shoot his face to pieces. Inglorious Basterds style.

For some reason, I don't think Hitler will make an appearance in-game and Deathshead will be the main antagonist. Or if he does, he would be over 70 years old...guess he could be just sitting in his oval office in the very end and get shot between the eyes in slow-motion by the player.

...or if they do include him and keep the crazy style of this game going, it'll hopefully be Mecha-Hitler. Or head in a jar with telekinetic powers.

Anyway, I haven't been this excited for an FPS since...Syndicate/Bulletstorm, I guess? I enjoyed Bioshock and Far Cry 3, but more due to story and open-worldness, not because of the "LET'S SHOOT SHIT UP!" aspects. Though I also really like the setting and story they've got going on here.

Shooting a machine gun at Nazis from a 60's full body muscle car in a well realized city appeals immensely. It almost makes me hope for a sandbox game if this probably very linear game is the real thing it is saying it is.

I hope they have an interesting story to go with this game. I love shooters, but the gameplay of this looks hella average. I'm all for it if they have a fun story and good characters though.

Enemy Territory multiplayer was so fun. It kind of sucks they didn't include any type of multiplayer. There was definitely potential for something fun. Hopefully the focus on campaign will show.

I am interested in this, though ultimately it is going to be something that's only about the single player and I can't justify $60 for that.

I never understand this argument, where somehow the difference of $20 or even $40 impacts someone's taste in games when they genuinely acknowledge interest in them otherwise. What baffles me even more is the assumed mandate that all games need to include both single player and multiplayer in order to be worthy of someone's time or money. What about, you know, the actual game? The Story? The Fun? The experience?

If the argument is literally associating dollars and cents spent per hours and minutes played, I can't think of a worse way to enjoy anything. You can easily spend $20 just ordering a pizza with delivery (and let's not forget the required $5 tip if we live by the VinnCo credo). That $25 investment gets you maybe 10 slices with 3 toppings and extra cheese. As you bite into your third slice of delicious pizza does the fact that you've only paid $7.50 for the experience so far (that's lasted less than 30 minutes) impact how good it tastes and how much you enjoy it?

Funny thing about that $7.50 is that if we assume we can squeeze a good 8 hours from the single player campaign for this game out of that $60 retail price you're looking at $7.50 for every hour you play. For those keeping track at home that's DOUBLE the value of the delicious pizza you just ordered (granted, the Pizza DOES offer a Multi-Player component).

Is this a stupid way to look at the economics of games at retail? I couldn't agree more.

@ei8htbit: I never said it had to have a multiplayer and if it does have a multiplayer then its going to be more than likely mediocre. If you bothered to actually read everything I said, because based on your pulling one sentence from everything I said points to you NOT doing that, then you'd see I have no problem paying for single player when that content is significant. I read everything you wrote but I'm ignoring 99% of it because its irrelevant and has nothing to do with anything I said or was really talking about.

Is it stupid to take one sentence out of context only to support whatever argument you are making? Yes it is.

This actually came as a bit of a suprise for me when I first read about this some months ago, but apparently this is a sequel to Wolfenstein of 2009, which is also a sequel to Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Sequel meaning that there's a continuation to the story in each part.

In RTCW and Wolfenstein, Nazis were tampering more with occultism and such, though they also had some supersoldats in those too. The New Order mainly seems to have robots/machines, as far as the sci-fi of it goes.

Also Deathshead Happy Man escaped B.J. in RTCW and narrowly avoided dying in Wolfenstein. Those two happened around 1943, while The New Order takes place in 1960.Of course I've only read about that from different wikis, so will probably have to wait for the actual game to come out and see if there's any references to be had.

This is sorta why I'd like to play Wolfenstein, but you can't get that damned game digitally anymore.

Either this game is actually way better than it has any business being or the marketing team that is cutting these trailers deserves all the awards.

I do agree all the story tidbits have actually gotten my attention and now I'm actually curious to play the where, whereas a few months ago I also thought "well, just another shooter."

That's how I'm feeling about this. Haven't sat through a shooter in a bit, so this will be one to keep on my upcoming list.

"Deathhead" Is quite literally the Translation of "Totenschädel", the insignia of the SS (I think). The actual translation would be "skull" of course. So maybe ze Doktor is just head of an SS outfit and got his name for a fitting reason.

They don't show a lot of it, but the combat looks good to me. I wonder how people can complain about combat at this stage, when all we got was awesome story-teasers and and outlook on a game that is made by some of the industry's best. I have no reason to complain. Looks dope!
